BISSELL Pet Foundation will host a free pet vaccine clinic on Saturday, Oct. 15, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at its headquarters parking lot, 2345 Walker Ave. NW.

The event is designed to help keep pets healthy. For example, if dogs aren’t vaccinated at a young age, they will be vulnerable to diseases such as rabies, canine distemper, hepatitis, canine parvovirus, Lyme disease, canine influenza, leptospirosis, and kennel cough.

According to the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention, mandatory vaccinations for dogs has halted the natural spread of rabies among domestic dogs. Still about 60 to 70 dogs and around 250 cats are reported rabid each year and nearly all of those animal were unvaccinated and acquired rabies from wildlife such as bats, raccoons, and skunks.

At Saturday’s event, there will be no-cost services offered for distemper and rabies for cats and dogs, bordetella (to help prevent respiratory diseases) and heartworm testing for dogs, microchips and Kent County dog licenses. Pets should be eight weeks or older. NOTE: Heartworm prevention will be available for purchase after a negative heartworm test.

Pet parents should bring cats in carriers and dogs on leaches and must not forget current vaccination records. All services will be provided at the veterinarians’ discretion. No appointed is necessary to receive services at this clinic. First come, first served.

The BISSELL Pet Foundation Free Pet Vaccine Clinic is offered in partnership with Michigan State University: College of Veterinarian Medicine, Harbor Humane Society, Humane Society of West Michigan, Kent County Animal Shelter, Grand Rapids Pitbull Alliance, and C-SNiP.
