Caledonia recognized for work in academic, behavior strategies for students

Caledonia Community Schools recently received recognition from the state for its work in providing students with various needs academic and behavior strategies to help them be successful in school and beyond.

Known as Multi-tiered System of Supports (MTSS), the framework is used to identify and help students who are struggling. MTSS has become a priority of the Michigan Department of Education (MDE). For that reason, the MDE and Michigan’s MTSS Technical Assistance Center have developed a process for identify and recognizing intermediate school districts, local school districts, and individual schools that are demonstrating strong outcomes and/or making progress related to meeting the needs of each and every learner through a multi-tiered framework

A component of the MTSS is providing interventions. These interventions are matched to a student needs baed on data and monitored routinely to determine progress.

A major component of MTSS is collaboration. Teams of educators with a variety of expertise, work together to engage in shared problem-solving around students who do not respond to the core level of instruction in the classrooms. Parents are informed and involved throughout the process.

For its work in MTSS, Caledonia was informed that all nine of tis schools earned the Data Utilization award for collecting and using MTSS fidelity data and that the district earned the MTSS Data Utilization award for using the District Capacity Assessment during the 2021-2022 school year. In addition to that, all five district elementary buildings and Duncan Lake Middle School received either a GOLD and/or BRONZE honor for the MTSS process they have established at the school level for implementing a MTSS framework in reading and/or behavior.
