Dr. Carol Robinson, Community Coordinator from Making Choices Michigan, will speak on It’s About the Conversation: Advance Care Planning, which will highlight issues regarding Advanced Care Planning (ACP) and one’s ability to make medical decisions when they are unable to.
The lecture will take place on Wednesday, March 13, 2019, at 7pm at Wealthy Theatre Annex in the Front Studio at 1110 Wealthy Street SE in Grand Rapids, MI.
“No one can predict when a sudden illness or accident may leave you unable to make personal healthcare decisions,” said Robinson. “Who would speak for you if you could not speak for yourself? Would they know what to say about what medical treatment you would, or would not, want? Would they follow your preferences regarding other aspects of your care?
Regardless of where you are in your life — whether you’re healthy and young, or living with chronic illness — Advance Care Planning (ACP) builds the foundation for a lifetime of conversations to ensure that as your life unfolds your preferences for healthcare are known.
The culmination of these conversations is an Advance Directive, a legal document that should be shared with your family members, patient advocates, and healthcare providers.
Dr. Robinson, DNP, RN, CHPN, has had a varied nursing career in both clinical and administrative leadership positions. Her clinical specialty has focused on adults and children with life-limiting disease. Her passion for the care of chronically ill patients and families led to extensive experience with patient/family communication relative to quality of life and treatment preferences. Her scholarly work has focused on communication skills for health professionals, including advance care planning conversations. Her friendly and open approach has helped many individuals create an advance directive reflective of one’s own personal values, beliefs, and preferences for end-of-life care.
