As part of its mission to boost financial literacy and education within the communities it serves, MSU Federal Credit Union (MSUFCU) created The Culture of Finances.

The innovative program led by MSUFCU financial educators aims to foster financial confidence and empowerment among both young people and adults, covering topics such as budgeting, understanding credit, debt management, fraud, and effective financial goal-setting.

Cohort details

The fall 2024 cohort will begin Tuesday, Sept. 3. Registration is currently open at msufcu.org/thecultureoffinances through Friday, Aug. 23. The Culture of Finances is open to all community members. Course options will be available in person or online.

The adult program lasts 12 weeks with five mandatory sessions. The youth program lasts eight weeks with four mandatory sessions. When individuals complete the program, they are eligible to be entered into a drawing to win $500.

Eliminating barriers, building confidence

Through active engagement with members and in-depth research, MSUFCU recognized the need for a more inclusive financial literacy initiative and launched The Culture of Finances program in late 2023. This program aims to eliminate barriers for underrepresented and unbanked populations, establish trust, and provide equitable access to financial education.

“Navigating the sea of financial challenges requires a strong culture of resilience, informed decisions, and unwavering determination,” said program graduate Michelle Miles from Lansing, Michigan. “Each wave we face strengthens our resolve, guiding us to smoother waters and greater prosperity.

“Through this program, I’ve learned valuable strategies for managing finances, setting achievable goals, and making informed choices. Others can benefit by gaining confidence in their financial decisions, learning to overcome obstacles, and ultimately achieving their financial dreams.”

Since it launched, The Culture of Finances has had 162 registered participants; 82 graduates; and, in addition to those in Michigan, it has helped people living in Georgia, Illinois, Missouri, North Carolina, Texas, and Wisconsin.

“The Culture of Finances aims to empower our community to take control of their financial wellness,” said Jamara Randall, Market Manager at MSUFCU. “Our first three cohorts have graduated over 80 individuals.

“It has been inspiring to watch each participant embark on this journey, learning and growing with one another, while receiving the tools to reach their financial dreams.”
