Due to the recall on some powder formulas produced by Abbott, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services has temporarily expanded powder formula choices for those who receive WIC assistance.
According to a Kent County Health Department update, the MDHHS has expanded the powder formula options for those using WIC EBT benefits.
Those using Similac Advance may purchase Parents Choice Advantage, Meijer Infant, Gerber Good Start Gentle, Enfamil Infant, and Enfamil Reguline.
For Similac Total Comfort, those on WIC may purchase Parent’s Choice Gentle, Meijer Gentle, Gerber Good Start SoothePro, and Enfamil Gentlease.
For Similac for Spit-Up, the option is Enfamil A.R. and for Similac Sensitive, it is Parent’s Choice Sensitivity.
Those using the WIC EBT card may purchase the same number of cans from their benefit balance. No end date was given on the temporary formula options. For more information, visit the MDHHS website.
Abbott initiated the voluntary recall of powder formulas including Similac, Alimentum, and EleCare manufactured in Sturgis, Michigan, one of the company’s manufacturing facilities. The recall does not include any metabolic deficiency nutrition formulas.
The products were recalled after four consumer complaints related to the bacteria Cronobacter sakazakii or Salmonella Newport in infants who had consumed powder infant formula manufactured in the Sturgis facility.
The products under recall have a multi-digit number on the bottom of the container starting with the first two digits 22 through 37, contains K8, SH, or Z2 and with an expiration date April 1, 2022 or after.
Abbott has been testing product and has stated that no distributed product has tested positive for presence of either bacteria. The company continues to test. For more information on Abbott, visit the U.S. Food and Drug Administration website.
