Grant supports ‘farm to cafeteria’ movement

LANSING — Nathan Medina recalls eating bland, boring, non-fresh foods at school as a child.

 

“I remember eating bagged iceberg lettuce, canned corn and green beans or broccoli stems served alongside our cardboard pizza,” said Medina, who now is the 10 Cents a Meal program policy specialist.

Medina said it was refreshing to see some of the eye-appealing meals that are being served by grantees across the state.

 

The state-funded grants provide matching incentive funding up to 10 cents per meal to purchase and serve Michigan-grown fruits, vegetables and legumes.

The program is in its second year statewide and was originally a regional pilot program that began in 2016, Medina said.

He’s with the Groundwork Center for Resilient Communities, which has offices in Traverse City and Petoskey, and which runs the program with the state Education Department, Agriculture and Rural Development Department and Michigan State University’s Center for Regional Food Systems.

“This program provides kids with the opportunity to eat real, fresh food that they might not have had the chance to experience before,” said Medina. “While before they might have been eating apples grown in Washington, now they get to try a farm-fresh Michigan apple.”

For the 2021-2022 school year, there were 229 initial grantees, according to the 10 Cents a Meal program. Kent County schools participating include Godwin Heights along with Byron Center, Forest Hills, Kenowa Hills, Kent City, Lowell, Thornapple Kellogg, and West Catholic. Other area schools participating are Jenison along with schools in Holland, Ionia, and Muskegon. According to the 10 Cents a Meal website, about 144 enrolled in the program.

Grants are available not only to school districts, but also to non-school sponsors of the U.S. Department of Agriculture nutrition programs. That includes child care centers, after-school programs and other food programs such as the one provided by the Kent County Juvenile Detention program, which also was a 2021-2022 grant recipient. It is estimated that this year’s grants will support more than 553,000 children.

The Michigan Farmers Market Association supports the program to help farmers, schools and children, said Executive Director Amanda Shreve.

“This program really gives school districts one of the tools they need to more easily engage with local farmers,” she said.

Medina said the program can create individualized plans for participating schools and other organizations.

Not only is the program aiming to create better nutrition options, but it also recognizes the agricultural benefits that come with fresh food. Small farms, distributors and every other person involved in the process of the “farm-to-cafeteria” movement” benefit, Medina said.

Shreve said, “This program really gives school districts one of the tools they need to more easily engage with local farmers.”

Some schools face barriers to access fresh produce, such as cost, time or processing equipment, she said.

“When we can expand the awareness and taste buds of children at a young age, they’re going to continue these eating behaviors for the rest of their lives,” Shreve said. “We hope they will continue to scout local produce and eat fresh fruits and vegetables, setting them up for a lifetime of better health and relationships with food.”

According to Medina, the current budget of $5 million may be expanded in the future.

 

Due to the fact that Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed the $17.1 billion K-12 budget into law in July 2021, the largest single-year School Aid Fund budget ever passed by the state, this doubled the 10 Cents a Meal’s budget from $2 million in 2020-2021 to $5 for 2021-2022. This has given 10 Cents a Meal an opportunity reopen its applications, which will close on Feb. 11. WKTV Voices brings live storytelling to the Wyoming, Kentwood communities

Detroit author William Kienzle often would say that every person has a good story. Local resident and WKTV volunteer Donna Kidner Smith is hoping to encourage people to share their stories.

This month, on Feb. 24, Smith will be the host of the WKTV Voices’ Storytelling Project. The program will take place at Wyoming’s The Stray, 4253 S. Division Ave., at 7 p.m.

The idea for the project came from Moth Radio Hour, which airs on NPR stations across the nation. The program features storytellers who share stories that honor both the diversity and commonality of human experience, and satisfies a human need for connection.

“I thought this is such a wonderful program and wondered why we didn’t have a local version,” said Smith, who teaches a story making class at Grand Valley State University.

Stories were the essential way that traditions and information were passed from people to people and generations to generations, Smith noted. It is an art form as well as an important way that communities stay connected.

In the fall, a friend invited Smith to attend a musical program at the newly opened The Stray.

“I saw the place and knew it would be perfect for this event,” Smith said.

Hunter VanKlompenberg, who oversees the programming at The Stray said they felt like the WKTV Voices’ Storytelling Project seemed like a good fit as well.

“It sounded like a cool idea,” VanKlompenberg who with his parents, Chip and Karen, and his partner, Victoria LATeano, own The Stray. Chip VanKlompenberg is the president. Karen VanKompenberg is the creative director, Victoria LaTeano is the cafe manager and Hunter VanKlompenberg is the music and arts manager.

The coffee house officially opened in September, but the foursome had been working on the project for well over a year, VanKlompenberg said. They selected the location on Division Avenue because of its high traffic but also the building, located at 4253 Division Ave., provided enough space for the group’s vision. That vision was to create a coffee house that would offer live music and other programs as well as a place for local artists.

Work from local artists are on display and available for purchase. Plans include artist studios in the back of the building and there will be a patio space come spring.

Currently, The Stray features the café in the front of the building. The menu features a selection of coffees and non-coffee items such as tea, hot chocolate and Brix soda. There is also a lunch menu of sandwiches and salads and in the evening, the offerings include flat breads and a selection of beer and wine.

The seating area is a mix of tables and sofas, all of which Karen, an artist and interior designer, found searching social media sites, according to VanKlompenberg. The design is definitely a homey, welcoming feel which is an ideal setting for the live performances.

“We try to create a listening atmosphere, building an intimate connection between the artist and the audience,” VanKlompenberg said, adding the focus is on the performer, giving the person a chance to get feedback from the audience and the audience and opportunity to learn about the performer. VanKlompenberg said the response has been positive with both the performers and audience members.

Smith was one of those audience members who felt that welcoming vibe and found the opportunity to really make a connection, which is something she wants to do with the WKTV Voices’ Storytelling Project.

“The program is about connecting with the community, our community,” Smith said. “I hope people will share their stories and those who come will listen, learn and laugh with our storytellers.”

About 13 community members have signed up to share story vignettes that will be about four to six minutes in length. The entire event will be recorded by WKTV and aired on Comcast Channel 25 at a later date.

Smith said the goal is to host the WKTV Voices’ Storytelling Project on a regular basis. She is currently working to gather a group of storytellers for the next event, which will be announced. The Stray is open from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Wyoming boys basketball team ready for second half of OK Green schedule, playoff stretch drive

The Wyoming High School boys basketball team finished their non-conference schedule with three-straight wins and then went 4-3 in the first half of their grueling OK Conference Green schedule, including a road loss to state power Muskegon.

So as the Wolves (7-5 overall, third in OK conference standings) prepared this week for the beginning of the second half of the OK Green schedule with a road game at Muskegon Reeths-Puffer — 8-4, 5-2 in conference including a hard-fought win over Wyoming on Jan. 7 — Wolves head coach Thom Vander Klay might be pretty happy with where his team stands.

And maybe not …

“Sitting in third was not the objective,” Coach Vander Klay said to WKTV. “We are definitely looking to become more consistent to compete in the (state) tournament. … We look to work to be the best team we can be, which may mean more victories in the second round and in the tournament.”

Despite a pandemic-altered 2020-21 season last year, the Wolves were in top form at tournament time, with a home win over Byron Center and then a tough, 54-52, road loss at East Grand Rapids to finish 7-9 overall.

In the 2019-20 season, the team’s last year in the OK Gold, the Wolves finished 11-1 in conference and 20-2 overall including two wins in the playoffs — before the pandemic stopped the season in the middle of what could have been a deep playoff run.

Now in the Wolves second year in the OK Green, Vander Klay does not see the move as giving his team in tougher schedule, it is just those long roadtrips — to Muskegon and Zeeland — that are a challenge.

“Not sure the Green is better than the Gold,” Vander Klay said. “We switch leagues every few years so it has been difficult to get rivals but we are getting to know these teams and what they try and do.

“The hardest part is the travel. We seem to have many schools we can play but we are going to the Lakeshore Tuesdays and Fridays.”

In the second half of the OK conference schedule, the Wolves will host four of the seven games, including hosting two teams Wyoming lost to on the road in the first round, Muskegon (currently 10-0, 7-0 OK) on Feb. 11 and Grand Rapids Union on Feb. 22.

Junior dominated team, with senior leaders

Coach Vander Klay said while the Wolves’ current team has only four seniors, seven juniors and no underclassmen, he is feels the squad is “doing really well”, especially senior leaders Ramere Draper (19.5 points per game average), Jaleel Holt (13.3 ppg.) and Jordan Love (9.4 ppg.)

Draper was first team all conference last year, and Love was honorable mention.

One of the juniors making a big impact in the stat sheet with double-figure scoring is Qua’dir Hatchett (10.6 ppg.). But Alyjah Chandler, Bernie Varnesdeel, Eugene Atkins and Quintin Williams are also key contributors.

Andrew Tran is the other senior, while other juniors include Jaden LaFleur and Jameson Lamrouex.

Wyoming hosts informational meetings on proposed income tax, millage reduction proposals

Wyoming residents wanting to learn more about the city’s proposed income tax and millage reduction proposals will have the chanced at a series of informational meetings.

Starting tomorrow, Feb. 2, the city will be hosting seven public meetings in February, March, and April. The meetings are designed to provide information regarding the May 3, 2022 ballot proposals. The two proposals are an income tax that would be up to 1 percent for residents and up to .5 percent for non-residents. The second proposal would be for a city property millage reduction for property owners both homeowners and business owners. The millage would go from about 11.89 to 5 mills. The two proposals are tied together with both required to pass.

“It is my goal to make sure every Wyoming voter has the information they need to vote on May 3,” said Mayor Jack Poll. “The public meetings are a chance for residents and community members to learn more about the need and have their questions answered.”

The first meeting is set for Wednesday, Feb. 2, at Wyoming City Hall, 1155 28th St. SW. The meeting is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. 

The other meetings are:

Feb. 16, Wyoming Senior Center, 2380 DeHoop Ave. SW

March 2, Gezon Fire Station, 2300 Gezon Parkway SW

March 9, Del Mar Community Room

March 15, Godwin Heights High School, 50 35th St. SW

April 19, KDL Wyoming Branch, 3350 Michael Ave. SW

In September, the Wyoming City Council approved the two proposes to be placed on the May 3 ballot. If approved, the proposals would minimize the overall tax burden to city residents while generating an additional $6 million in revenue each year. The revenue would be used to improve public safety and parks infrastructure for residents, businesses, and visitors.

 

The additional funds would allow the Wyoming Department of Public Safety to add 27 firefighter and 14 police positions, improving public safety by decreasing response times, enhancing crime prevention efforts and adding more proactive traffic enforcement.

 

The funding also would provide $600,000 in sustainable annual capital invest in the city’s park system. Many of the city’s parks were built between 1950 and 1970 and while the city has made great strides in developing park properties such as ideal, Frog Hollow, Jackson and Ideal, other parks such as Marquette Park, are 25-years-old or more and are in need of capital improvement. City officials have noted that the current parks millage does not have capacity to provide any funding for capital investment.

Chamber celebrates local businesses as it has its first annual meeting in two years

It was a night of celebration as the Wyoming Kentwood Area Chamber of Commerce hosted its Annual Meeting and Awards Dinner, the first since COVID pandemic in 2020.

Along with celebrating the annual award recipients, the event, which this year was held at Crossroads Conference Center off of Clay Avenue, also gave members and local officials the opportunity to celebrate the contributions of President and CEO Bob Callaghan. In November, O’Callaghan announced his retirement from the chamber after working with Chamber for past 30-plus years, the last nine as its president and CEO.

 

“I can’t even guess how many feet of ribbon you have cut over the course of time, but I have been there for a lot of those ribbon cuttings and it is always important for new businesses to see that we are committed to them,” said Wyoming Mayor Jack Poll during a recent Government Matters, which is hosted by the Chamber and broadcast by WKTV.

“Thank you for all you have done to help the small business, the big businesses, businesses in general especially in these tough, tough times,” said Kentwood Mayor Stephen Kepley during the Government Matters meeting. “ We really appreciate all that you did.”

For his years of service, O’Callaghan was awarded with the Gerald E. Fessell Distinguished Service Award. O’Callaghan thanked everyone at the meeting, stating he has some wonderful memories and hopes to remain in touch with many who were in attendance at the meeting.

The Chamber’s new president and CEO, Keith Morgan, also spoke during the event. He talked about the challenges many have faced due to COVID and how the Chamber is beginning to look at what it offers and will be offering some new and exciting opportunities to members.

Award recipients

Receiving the Retail Business of Year Award was Craig’s Cruisers, located at 5730 Clyde Park Ave. SW. With around 120,000 square feet, Craig’s Cruisers is one of the largest indoor, and outdoor, recreation facilities in the area, offering go carts, mini golf, an indoor roller coaster, laser tag, and a wide selection of games. The facility also has a 700-capactiy seating restaurant, which is the largest seating capacity restaurant in Kent County.

Receiving the Manufacturer of the Year Award was Weller Truck Parks, 1500 Gezon Parkway SW, Wyoming. Weller Truck Parks is a re-manufacturer of heavy- and medium-duty drive tran components for the transportation industry. The company has been based in Wyoming since the 1970s and now has 36 locations distributing its products and employs around 1,000 people.

Receiving the Linda Harbor Service Business of the Year Award went to ServPro of South and Northwest Grand Rapids, which is based in Jenison. As sales rep Mike Nix puts it “Typically if you are calling us you are not having a very good day but we are here to make sure things are done right and on the first time.” ServPro of South and Northwest Grand Rapids is a full service restoration business. It offers fire and water cleanup, mold remediation, biohazard cleanup up as well as construction site services.

Volunteer of the Year Award went to Blue Frost IT. Owners Allen and Ashlynne Gilbert, said when they formed their IT company, they made the commitment to give back to their company and they wanted to see firsthand what their support was doing for the community they serve, often working hand-in-hand with the charitable organizations. Blue Frost IT has worked with UCOM and Family Network of Wyoming as well as served as ambassadors and on the foundation board for the Chamber.

This year’s Committee of the Year Award went to the Government Matters group. At the beginning of each month, the Government Mattes Committee brings together local government officials who discuss things taking place in the cities of Wyoming and Kentwood, on the state level and nationally as well. 

What can be recycled in Kent County, and how to do it —  Holiday light strings

What can and cannot be recycled in Kent County, and how do it. And what happens to everything else? WKTV Journal, working with Kent County Department of Public Works Resource Recovery Specialist Lauren Westerman, are working to look at specific consumer products and other items and give you the answers.

In this post, we look at those annoying strings of holiday lights that no longer work. Packaging often does not have any recycling information. But what does that mean? Here is the lowdown from an expert:

Holiday string lights are considered electronic waste.  They cannot be recycled through single-stream or curbside recycling collection programs.  Kent County Department of Public Works (DPW) has collection bins for holiday string lights at both North Kent Recycling & Waste Center and South Kent Recycling & Waste Center or they can be brought to our electronics recycling collection programs.  After Kent County DPW collects the string lights, they are taken to an electronics recycling company where the various component parts (types of metal, wires, plastics, glass, etc.) are separated and recycled accordingly. 

When you purchase new holiday string lights, there are a few different parts of the packaging to be aware of when it comes to proper disposal.  If the lights come in a box, empty the cardboard box, flatten it, and place it into your single-stream curbside recycling cart.  If you have any soft and flexible plastic packaging, tape, or twist-ties, place them into the garbage.

Veterans millage ‘continuation’ plans takes step forward after Kent County subcommittee meeting

The Kent County Board of Commissioners’ Veterans Millage Renewal Subcommittee, led by City of Wyoming’s (District 8) commissioner Dan Burrill, has approved and sent on to other county standing committees the details of a planned August 2022 countywide vote to continue an existing Veterans Millage first passed in 2014.

Since the millage expired in 2021, the millage request would not be a renewal but a “continuation” if approve by voters.

The decision to take the millage request to the voters would eventually need to be approved by the full Board of Commissioners, but there are two county governance standing committees, including the finance committee, which would need to discuss and give approval to first.

The Tuesday, Jan. 18, meeting at the Kent County Administrative Building was the second of the subcommittee. The meetings were open to the public, veterans and non-veterans alike.

The subcommittee’s two meetings included several local veterans groups as well as the Kent County Veterans Services (KCVS) office and its associated Veterans Services Advisory Committee. The KVCS provides dedicated services to veterans of active United States military service and their dependents, under the direction of manager Martha Burkett, and is substantially funded by the millage, along with an annual Kent County budget contribution.

In November 2014, Kent County voters approved a Dedicated Veterans Millage, an eight year, 0.05 mills tax that, at that time, would raise about $1 million a year and was estimated to cost the owner of a $200,000 home approximately $5 annually, according to the county website.

Due to several factors — including the 1978, voter-approved amendment to the Michigan Constitution which included a number of provisions related to state and local taxes and now commonly known as the Headlee Amendment — the actual tax collection decreased from 0.05 mills to 0.0482 in 2021.

Statewide, 51 of Michigan’s 83 counties posted a millage dedicated to veterans in 2020.

Wyoming starts off 2022 with an expansion in manufacturing, new housing development opens

Earlier this month, industrial recycling and scrap management company Padnos announced it would expand its operations in the City of Wyoming, creating up to 50 jobs. The company operates a plant at 500 44th St. SW, in Wyoming.

The project is expected to generate a total capital investment of $6.6 million. It i supported by a $250,000 Michigan Business Development Program performance-based grant, according to a press release from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, the state’s marketing arm and lead advocate for business development, job awareness and community development with focus on Michigan’s economy. Also supporting the project is The Right Place, which has offered staff time and resources for the project.

 

“Padnos is proud to further our investment in the community while increasing our process capabilities to meet market demands. We are seeing an increase in demand for recycled material and we are committed to working with our partners to get these materials back into new products and keeping them out of our landfills and oceans,” said Jonathan Padnos President and CEO Jonathan Padnos in a written release.

 

Padnos, founded in 1905 in the City of Holland, has been transforming scrap into reusable resources for more than 100 years. The company recycles metals, paper, plastics, and electronics and currently has more than 725 team members in facilities located in Michigan and Indiana.

 

The expansion at the Wyoming facility will focus on the company’s effort to increase its capabilities into recycling ocean-bound plastics. Padnos will add new loading docks, a laboratory, and a maintenance garage to the Wyoming facility. It will also invest in electrical and infrastructure upgrades.

 

The project will bring immediate jobs to residents in the area and cement the 100-year-old company’s presence in Michigan. Padnos is committed to work with underserved communities and provides training to individuals returning from incarceration, providing them with the skills needed to be successful in the workforce.

Meeting the housing deficit

Construction continues in the City of Wyoming with The Granger Group announcing it has welcomed its first tenets to the multifamily development, The Reserve Flats.

 

Located on Wilson Avenue, half-mile north of M-6, the 138-unit community is being built by Grand Rapids-based contractor Orion Constriction and features 26 condo-style apartments ranging from three- to eight-unit buildings. Spread over 22 acres, the project is being constructed in three phases, the first phase delivering 15 units with two- and three-bedroom floor plans.

“Granger is focused on building strong, vibrant communities and The Reserve is another example of the level of quality we expect to deliver in the communities we invest in together,” said Jason Granger, who oversees strategic investment initiatives for Granger, in a written release.

 

While referencing Kent County’s 2021 study that projects a nearly 9,000-unit deficit to be filled by 2025, Granger said, “We set out to build a development that provides quality housing options for the City of Wyoming while also serving a greater Grand Rapids area that desperately needs additional housing now more than ever.”

Units at The Flats range from 1,400 to 1,700 square feet. Each unit has a two-car attached garage along with a dedicated driveway and a covered porch at the main entrance.

 

Orion Construction broke ground on the projects first phase in August 2021. The company has seven buildings and 32 units enclosed as they continue to work through the winter elements. The project is scheduled to be completed by fall of this year. 

Y program helps lift weights – both physical and mental – for those who are cancer survivors

The two disappear into another room for a couple of minutes returning with blue hand weights and from there Groothuis starts leading the two through some arm strengthening exercises.

The exercises are what you would expect from an exercise class, bicep curls and tricep extensions. Except this isn’t a regular exercise class, but one designed specifically for adult cancer survivors.

 

The Livestrong program, offered by the Y, is an evidence-based physical activity and well-being program. During the 12-week program, participants spend 75 minutes twice a week on cardiovascular conditioning, strength training, balance and flexibility exercises under the guidance of YMCA-certified instructors.

For Groothuis, the program became just what she needed to help overcome her cancer diagnosis.

“I feel as if certain doors are open at certain times,” Groothuis and it was certainly the case when it came to discovering the Livestrong program. It was eight years ago, when Groothuis received her first diagnosis of breast cancer.

“I had felt something in my breast and thought that just doesn’t feel right,” she said. A registered nurse, Groothuis decided to get the suspicious lumps checked out and her suspicions were confirmed, they were cancer.

Even with the diagnosis, things were looking good since the cancer had been caught early and could be removed, which it was. But even before starting treatment, Groothuis knew that the surgery and the treatments were going to have an impact on the very active Groothuis who use to run with friends before work, teach a cycling class and had even competed in a few triathlons.

 

A longtime Y member — “I have friends at about every location,” she said with a laugh — Groothuis happened to pick up a brochure about the Livestrong program. She knew she had found an answer in how to keep active.

“It really helped me as I was going through treatment, said Groothuis, who was one of a few people who could participate in the program during her treatment process. Most participants join after their radiation and chemotherapy have been completed. Medical clearance from a physician is required and participants also receive fitness and quality of life assessments before they begin the program.

“Being with other people who were going through what I was going through and having instructors who understood our realities added a whole new and beautiful dimension to group exercise,” she said.

 

Groothuis found the program so rewarding that she decided to become a certified Livestrong instructor, which she accomplished in 2020.

 

“Coaching is a way for me to give back to other people while feeling productive,” Groothuis said. “”It really has become a pay-it-forward.”

 

It also has been an anchor in helping Groothuis face her second cancer diagnosis in 2020.

 

“We spend time talking about what we are facing and often, I’ll say lets walk and talk,” she said. “We do the exercises, sharing our stories and knowing that we are not alone.”

Groothuis was only able to teach a few classes before the COVID pandemic shut down the Ys in 2020. As places reopened, including all the Y facilities, the Livestrong program has been re-started at all the Ys. Groothuis said she hopes others who are on the cancer journey will take advantage of the opportunity to lift weights, both mental and physical.

“I know I was afraid that I wouldn’t feel like doing anything after treatment,” Groothuis said. “It was thrilling to be able to engage with people while doing something to improve my health.”

Wyoming Public Safety responds to two early morning fires

In the early morning hours of Jan. 25, the Wyoming Department of Public Safety responded to two fires, one Canal Avenue and one on 28th Street.

At approximately 2:30 a.m., both the department’s police and fire responded to the report of a house fire in the 5300 block of Canal Ave SW.

As Wyoming officers and firefighters arrived on scene, they observed the house was fully engulfed in flames. They determined that the residents were able to escape the house fire and confirmed there were no other persons in the residence. Wyoming Firefighters along with crews from Grandville Fire, Byron Center Fire, and Georgetown Fire battled the house fire for several hours, however, the residence suffered significant structural damage. The total value of the damage is unknown currently.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, however there does not appear to be any safety concern for the public. A male resident was transported to a local hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation, according to the department’s report.

At approximately 6 a.m. on Jan. 25, members from both the department’s police and fire as well as teams from the Grand Rapids Fire Department and Grandville Fire Department responded to a the report of fire at the Taco Bell located at 1819 28th St. SW, Wyoming. Taco Bell employees reported seeing smoke and flames coming from the rear of the restaurant as they arrived for work.

 

When the crews arrived, they noticed the fire had spread and the building was fully engulfed in flames. Crews on scene confirmed there were no persons in the building. The crews were able to extinguish the fire, however the building sustained substantial damage. Fire crews are still on the scene investigating and there were no reported injuries because of the fire. The total value of the damage is unknown currently, according to a report from the department. 

Readers download a record one million books from KDL in 2021

The ongoing COVID pandemic hasn’t stopped Kent County residents from reading library books, but it has influenced the way they get them.

The Kent District Library recently announced it reached a record-breaking one million digital book checkouts in 2021. KDL was one of 121 library systems worldwide to reach that milestone.

Randall Goble, director of engagement for KDL, said the increase was definitely related to the pandemic. While digital downloads had been increasing even before the days of COVID, they trended sharply upward when buildings closed in the spring of 2020, then remained high even
after libraries reopened.

“Digital is still really strong,” he said.

Digital access is the fastest growing segment of public library resources, KDL officials said.

Even before the pandemic, circulation of physical materials was not increasing at nearly the same rate as digital materials, according to Goble.

“There has been an increase in the circulation of digital materials because they’re so much more convenient to access,” Goble said. “We’re constantly striving to provide what people can access most easily and have the most value, and digital materials fit the bill.”

Readers in the Rockford area top Kent County in terms of digital downloads, he said.

“They absolutely are higher-than-average users,” he said.

According to figures provided by KDL, the following titles were the top five ebooks borrowed from their digital collection in 2021:

The 1 million figure includes mainly e-book downloads, but some audiobooks are also included, Goble said.

Rather than fight it, let’s join it.

This is a perfect time to check out World of Winter in downtown Grand Rapids. Plenty of activities are planned today through March 6.

But, if you want to escape winter, and you’re more focused on summer, it’s also a good weekend to go downtown Grand Rapids for the annual camper and RV show. It’s only a few months away from warmer days.

I also talk a little about basketball and “Star Wars,” two of my favorite passions.

Speaking of basketball, one of my favorite memories as a dad and coach was taking my middle school basketball team to see the iconic Harlem Globetrotters in action. 2. World of Winter Weekend

As part of the World of Winter in downtown Grand Rapids, musical performances and other forms of entertainment will take place throughout downtown from 6-8 p.m. Friday (Jan. 21). Also this weekend, a pop-up circus performance, curated by GR Circus, takes place from 6-8 p.m. Saturday (Jan. 22) at Ah-Nab-Awen Park near the Gerald R. Ford Museum. You can enjoy live fire performers, hula hoopers, aerial acts, juggling, stilt walking, and more. On Sunday (Jan. 23) enjoy a walking art installation tour. County commission terms to become four years, but not until 2024

One of the items that surprised Dan Burrill while seeking election to the Kent County Board of Commissioners was the fact that the seat was only for two terms.

“So basically, I had a year and then I am already back into campaigning,” said Burrill who won his bid to be the District 8 commissioner representing the City of Wyoming in 2020.

Michigan in fact was one of about five states in the United States that still had its county commission terms at two years. Note the “was” because in December Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed bills into law that would extend the terms of county commissioners from two to four years. The change will begin with the fall 2024 election.

“People have asked me ‘What do I get out of it?’” said Kent County Commissioner Stan Ponstein, who is the first vice president for the Michigan Association of Counties (MAC), the organization that worked to get the county commissioner term lengths changed. “And, well, for me personally, nothing as I am at the end of my political career.

“It will be a big help to those counties in the north, mostly the knuckle area and beyond, and in the U.P. (upper peninsula), where they have had problems finding people to serve on the county board of commissions.”

For the lower half of the state, the issue has been more on the cost of running a campaign.

“There have been people who have spent $30,000 to $40,000,” Ponstein said. “That is a lot of money just to be a county commissioner and then have to spend it about every two years.”

Up until 1963, county commission seats were four-year terms. At the time, the group was referred to as the Board of Supervisors. With the development of  townships, which became supervisors, the county boards were changed to Board of Commissioners, serving two-year terms, Ponstein said. Besides county commissioners, all other county- and township-elected officials are elected to terms of at least four years. This includes county clerk and treasurer. U.S. and state house of representatives are now the only government-elected offices that have two-year terms in Michigan.

The change, according to Burrill, gives newer commissioners like himself a chance to learn the ins and outs of county government, which includes representing county interests at the state and federal government, participating in long-range planning and managing the county budget and finances. Much of the Kent County budget covers the sheriff’s office, the courts, the prosecutor, the treasurer and other independently elected county officials.

 

“Having the four years allows you to work together more on a local level while forming relationships and concentrating on the needs of the county,” Burrill said.

The change will not impact the upcoming county election, which is set for this fall. “This will be the last year Kent County commissioners will run for two years,” Ponstein said.

Also, all county commission seats will be up for election at the same time unlike in some city and township elections where seats are staggered for consistency. This is not a change for Kent County as currently all county commission seats are up at the same time.

Ponstein, who will become the president of MAC this year, said the effort behind getting the commission terms changed does demonstrate the efforts of what MAC does to help county commissions boards. Currently, the organization is working on several issues such as mental health and protecting revenue sharing on the county level. 

Writer, others share real life stories to raise awareness of current scams to warn readers

Encountering email and phone scams has become a common nuisance in recent years, even more so as we become more online- and internet-focused as a culture. It is not unusual for consumers to discover a fraudulent email in their personal and business accounts every day as scam artists attempt to cheat them out of money or information.

When this WKTV writer was asked to research an article on prevalent scams in the community, I was suddenly inundated with stories of those who had become victims of scams. Some escaped unscathed, others did not.

WKTV recognizes the importance of community members being aware of current scams so they can protect themselves against becoming victims, and has compiled several personal narratives, from this writer as well as other residents, to raise that awareness. (Names have been changed to protect the victim’s identity.)

Seeing red flags in emails

Within the space of a few days, my personal email account received a message with the heading, “Happy New Year – Your Order ID#740217.” It did not specify what company I supposedly ordered from, but did contain the message, “This message is from a trusted sender.” The body of the email contained two links. One labeled, “You have won!! Gift inside.” The other, “Go Here.”

It immediately raised red flags as I didn’t remember ordering anything recently, and the email didn’t specify the sender. The line about it being from a trusted sender, however, made me pause for just a moment and consider that it might be legitimate — and that is what scammers are hoping for.

Next came an email titled: “Re: (smiling emoji) Your Package delivery notification ID#87946477.” Supposedly, this email was sent by USPS. However, I couldn’t see the United States Postal Service using emojis in their emails, and when I noticed that the email address the message originated from was indecipherable, it became obvious that it was a scam.

Some are harder to discern. The next email seemed to legitimately come from Best Buy, an electronics retailer. The sender was listed as Bestbuy.com, which made sense. The heading was: “Your Order #502-20201222—is still awaiting instructions!” It then instructed me to track the status of the order by clicking on the link offered.

There weren’t any misspellings or emojis to make me think twice about the validity of the sender. What did make me think twice was that I hadn’t ordered anything from Best Buy in years.

After a closer look at the email — which looked alarmingly similar to many invoices received from other online orders placed — I noticed that listed under Order Details was another listing of an order number. This one, however, contained a lowercase ‘n’ and then the degree symbol before listing the number, and ended with a right parenthesis. Those small mistakes reassured me that the email was a scam. A company as large as Best Buy would make sure those mistakes were nonexistent.

Another email appeared to be from a friend, but the sender’s email address did not match her true email address. Another claimed to be from Quicken Loans Affiliate attempting to confirm my mortgage savings package (I neither have a mortgage nor have ever used Quicken Loans) but the email address was a random jumble of letters and numbers, not a legitimate address.

Other stories, other scam attempts

We have all received emails that make us think, “Is this legitimate?” What we need to do is slow down and take a closer look before assuming they are real and clicking on links.

While scam artists use email more often than phone calls due to the online nature of our culture, phone calls are still prevalent, especially for elderly community members who may not be quite as media oriented.

Attempting to sell a SLR camera body on Marketplace, Denise was asked if she could chat to an interested buyer via Messenger audio. She agreed and was then asked to ship the camera directly to the buyer’s brother because it was a birthday gift. She was willing to do so. The buyer then asked if she would include a birthday card and a $50 gift card since it would be shipped directly to his brother, and he would not have the opportunity to do so himself; he would then reimburse her for the camera, shipping, and gift card once she showed proof of shipping.

Alarm bells went off in Denise’s head.

The buyer was insistent and talked fast, so she pretended to agree to do as he asked so she could bring the call to an end. When the call finished and Denise had time to organize her thoughts, she realized she would have lost the camera, shipping, and $50 if she had gone along with the man’s request.

Scam artists prey on their victim’s emotions and promote a sense of urgency that is hard to ignore when someone believes a family member is in trouble.

Molly’s father-in-law received a garbled call: “Grandpa, I’m in Atlanta, was in an accident and broke my jaw. I was arrested for being drunk but hadn’t had a drop … will you wire me money for my bail and attorney?”

Thankfully, Molly’s father-in-law suspected fraud and instructed the caller to phone his father, then called Molly and asked her to check with her son to make sure it was fraud and that his grandson truly did not need help.

It was fraudulent.

Amy’s elderly parents experienced the same call and “made it all the way to the bank, where the employee stopped them and explained that they must not make that withdrawal. We figured out that my nephew’s phone had been hacked. He was out of the country on a trip at the time.”

Mark received what appeared to be a legitimate phone call from a scammer who claimed to be from his bank, warning him that a scammer had tried to break into his account.

They asked him to verify his information to make sure everything was okay. The scammers listed his address and phone number (all easily accessed public information) and asked if it was correct. When he replied that it was, they asked, “And I have your social security number on my screen, can you verify that for me, please?” Once the Mark recited his social security number, the scammer said, “Yes, that’s right.”

The victim had just given enough information for the scammers to steal his identity and/or open various accounts in the victim’s name.

“They (the scammers) say it so casually that the victim often doesn’t realize they’ve just given away a vital piece of information to the victim; it almost sounds like the scammer supplied all of their info,” Mark said.

Marci relayed an experience of an elderly woman who received a call that her taxes were late, and her house would be foreclosed on if she didn’t wire funds within the hour. Fearing that she would become homeless, “the woman called a cab and told the driver why she had to hurry. He took her instead to the police department.”

The police handled the matter, and the woman did not lose any money.

What to do, where to for for help

Katie Grevious, Better Business Bureau Communications Specialist, urges residents to slow down and “think before you act.”

Even if you feel a sense of urgency or fear as a result of an email or phone call like the ones listed above, step back, take a deep breath, and search for those clues that will help you know if the message you received is, in fact, legitimate.

With email and phone scams on the rise in an ever-increasing online and media culture, local law enforcement and government agencies are working to educate consumers on current scams and how to protect themselves from becoming victims.

Phishing, defined as the fraudulent practice of sending messages designed to trick individuals into revealing personal information, has become one of the main conduits for fraud.

Katie Grevious, Better Business Bureau Communications Specialist, told WKTV that falling victim to a scam has become more difficult to avoid as “scammers are becoming more crafty and creative.” Grevious said that scammers use fear and a sense of urgency to prompt consumers into following their directives: “It is an emotional situation. Something is wrong, something bad is going to happen — that’s what gets people.”

The ongoing pandemic has also played a role in increasing the phishing strategy, with emails offering grants to those out of work and in need of money. In a more general sense, an increasing number of consumers have begun shopping online, providing ample opportunities for scam artists to create situations that involve an emotional response of fear and urgency.

“We don’t see it really slowing down as the pandemic continues and we become more online and internet focused,” Grevious said.

Online shopping, social media scams

An online scam could also be as simple as clicking on a link to track an order. Scam artists often use the names of larger corporations, such as Amazon, to send emails offering a link to track an order that the consumer may not remember placing.

Grevious urges consumers to hover their computer mouse over the link, which will reveal a bar that states where it will actually take you, and even hover over the sender’s name to see the email address associated with that email. If it is a jumble of letters and numbers instead of, for example, Amazon.com, it is not legitimate. Also look at the browser — if there is a lock symbol and “https” listed there, it means it is a secure and authentic site.

“It is really important that people are vigilant all the time,” said Grevious. “Look for simple grammar and spelling mistakes. Big companies make sure everything is spelled correctly.”

Slowing down is also key to ensuring consumers don’t miss something important.

“Think before you act,” Grevious said. “Our culture has a quick-go pace. We do a lot on our phones, so we don’t do that double-checking and hovering.”

Det. Andrew Tompkins of the Kent County Sherriff’s Office and member of the Metropolitan Fraud and Identity Theft Team agrees: “Good practice is that if you didn’t order anything or didn’t sign up for something, then it’s most likely a scam.”

Grevious also urges consumers to avoid emails that tell you to re-log into another account you may have, such as Facebook, and offer a link to do so in order to complete the instructions given. These are often ploys that will reveal your password to the sender.

“People may think it’s not important if their Facebook or Instagram account gets hacked,” said Grevious, “but a lot of people have a lot of similar passwords because it’s too hard to remember 200 different passwords to everything. Your Facebook password may offer a clue on how to get into more important accounts — like bank accounts.”

Preying on pet, gift card buyers

In 2021, one of the most common phishing scams involved buying pets online.

“People tried to buy pets online because of the pandemic,” Grevious said. “They pay for the pet through payment apps and then find out it’s a scam. The scammers will often use a random address on the website they create, so people assume it’s real. Then they show up at that address to get their animal and it’s not there.”

Grevious advises seeing the animal you are interested in purchasing in person beforehand, even if it involves traveling. “Legitimate businesses want to know you are a good fit for their animal. They want to see you in person.”

While email scams have become increasingly common, scams involving phone calls are still prevalent and used often in attempts to illicit money from victims.

Det. Tompkins said that one of the most common scams involves cold calls targeting people to send gift cards, claiming they are from various government agencies and that they have a warrant for the arrest of the consumer unless he/she pays to absolve the issue.

“Government agenc(ies) will never ask for gift cards to get you out of legal trouble,” Det. Tompkins said. “No legitimate business is going to ask for gift cards for services.”

Summer and winter have revealed an upward trend in scams as air conditioning and heat are turned on in homes.

“If you pay your electric bill online, and someone calls you saying they are from Consumers Energy and ask you to confirm personal information,” Grevious said, “say you will call them back and call the company from a number you know, like the number provided on the bill.”

Det. Tompkins had similar advice: “Do not give personal information or identifying information out. Don’t call the number that a person provides you over the phone, search the number for that business to call and confirm this is a real interaction.”

Some scams, however, play on the familiar. Det. Tompkins warns residents, especially the elderly, to be careful of scammers who call claiming to be family. “Scammers call elderly pretending to be their grandkids saying they were arrested and need to send money.”

When asked the standard amount lost by individual victims of scams, he said, “The typical amount of loss is under $1,000. But if the scammers target business or subject(s) that are wealthy, then the loss is in the several thousands.”

Grevious reminds consumers to remember that, “you are in control of your information and who you are talking to. Think before you act.”

Consumers are also urged to speak up if they become victims of a scam.

“The more people let us know what is happening, the more we can help,” said Grevious.

Free COVID-19 Vaccine Clinic scheduled for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

University of Michigan Health-West is partnering with three other organizations to provide free COVID-19 vaccinations to residents on Martin Luther King Jr .Day which is Monday, Jan. 17.

The event will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m .at Brown-Hutcherson Ministries, 618 Jefferson Ave. SE.

The Grand Rapids African American Health Institute (GRAAH, an organization devoted to achieving healthcare parity for African Americans, is leading the coordination and public awareness efforts for this event. UMHW healthcare professionals will be providing vaccination services. The goal of the event is to increase the vaccination rate among African Americans while building greater awareness about the positive impact of the COVID-19 vaccine.

Wyoming-Kentwood Chamber hires entrepreneur, longtime volunteer as next president

The next leader of the Wyoming-Kentwood Area Chamber of Commerce is a businessman whose experience ranges from corporate management to starting a small business from scratch.

Keith Morgan, 46, will replace outgoing president and CEO Bob O’Callaghan, who is retiring effective Feb. 1.

 

“Our CEO Search Committee looked at over 80 applicants and Keith was the unanimous choice,” O’Callaghan said. “His knowledge of our Chamber and many years of business experience make him a natural. I am proud to turn the reins over to Keith.”

Stepping into the role in the midst of a pandemic, when the definition of “normal” is ever-shifting, Morgan said his goal for the chamber is to get back to basics.

“When I say back to basics, I’m talking about building a better tomorrow. There are going to be some changes we’re going to live with for a while. But business and commerce are always going to be with us,” he said. 

“As we move forward, how do we get back to the basics so we can begin to continue to create change on our own terms? The terms we’ve been given have been dealt to us at this point. Now, how do we begin to take the reins back and effect change?”

Morgan, an Indianapolis native, started volunteering for the Chamber about 10 years ago.

 

He originally came to West Michigan for a management position with AT&T. He got excellent training and experience running a sales division for AT&T, he said, but he got transferred around a lot, from Kentwood to Lansing to Wyoming. When AT&T wanted to transfer him yet again, he took the plunge and started his own janitorial business, All Clean Again.

“I always had ambitions to start a business and actually build something,” Morgan said.

 

Over several years, he grew the business from “cleaning the toilets myself” to employing a staff of about 20.

 

He had already started toying with the idea of selling his business when, as chair of the chamber board, he learned of O’Callaghan’s retirement plans. While actively involved in the search for a new president and CEO, the idea kept popping into his head that maybe he could take on the leadership role himself.

After talking with the chamber’s executive board members and local business leaders, and getting confirmation that they thought it would be a good idea, he made the difficult decision to sell his successful business and go in a new direction.

“I came up with this philosophy a few years ago: I’m not  going to continue to let life happen to me, I’m going to make life happen,” he said. “Being an entrepreneur, I got comfortable with risk. I was able to have enough success off the risks I had taken that I was a lot more comfortable with making that decision.”

With his corporate background, a master’s degree in business, and his experience being a small business owner, he thinks he can help chamber members with practical advice to help them be successful.

He also made a lot of connections in the area while owning his business, something crucial to his role at the Chamber of connecting businesses to other businesses.

Morgan will lead the Chamber’s annual meeting and awards dinner on Jan. 28, when O’Callaghan will be honored for his years of service.

“One of the things I am thankful for is that the current CEO and president has navigated the organization to where we are today. We have a good solid foundation,” Morgan said. 

KDL pauses indoor programs, libraries remain open

Kent District Library announced today that due to increased COVID-19 rates, it would be pausing all in-person, indoor programs at all KDL locations. Local libraries will remain open for all other services and resources.

According to KDL officials, this step was taken to address the risk of having large groups in enclosed rooms during a time when COVID-19 rates are increasing.

“We’re hopeful that programs can resume soon and we will continue to evaluate as new data emerges,” said a statement released to all patrons.

The Teen Film Festival will shift to a virtual event as it was last year. Early Childhood Education programs will take place virtually when instructors are available for online sessions. Also, some of the book talks and book clues may be available as online sessions.

The Sled Dogs visits will continue as outdoor programs. The Sled Dogs are scheduled to come to the KDL Kentwood (Richard L. Root) Branch Feb. 5 for a 10 a.m. program and to the KDL Grandville Branch on Feb. 25 at 1 p.m.

Wyoming police continue search for missing Wyoming man

The Wyoming Department of Public Safety needs the public’s assistance in locating Darriol Stephens, a 66-year-old white male from Wyoming. Stephans has been missing since Dec. 11 when he was seen leaving his residence by his roommate. Stephens requires medical attention which he has not received and there is growing concern fo this safety.

Wyoming Police are also trying locate Stephens black 2012 Chevy Impala with Michigan registration DSG2228. The vehicle has tinted windows and is similar to the vehicle pictured.

Wyoming Department of Public Safety detectives have conducted an extensive investigation and have followed up on all leads, but the leads have reduced significantly. We are again reaching out to the public for their help in locating Stephens or his vehicle.

“We are hopeful that someone may have information that we have not yet received and that they will reach out to our team,” read a press release from the Wyoming Department of Public Safety.

Kent County offers free radon test kits in January for National Radon Action Month

The Kent County Health Department recently announced that during the month of January — National Radon Action Month — county residents can gain free radon test kits while supplies last. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is leading month-long the public information effort.

“You cannot see, smell, or taste radon but the radioactive gas can kill,” the county announcement stated. “Next to smoking, radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States.”

Radon-caused lung cancer kills more than 20,000 Americans every year, according to the U.S. Surgeon General.

“Testing for radon is an easy and important step in protecting the health of your family,” Rusty Flewilling, Supervising Sanitarian with the Kent County Health Department (KCHD). said in supplied material. “The kit is easy to use. Simply hang a filter inside your house for a few days, then send it in a self-addressed, pre-stamped envelope for testing.”

The KCHD recommends that all homes be tested for radon every few years. Testing kits are available Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. at the KCHD’s main clinic location at 700 Fuller Avenue NE, Grand Rapids.

Test results will be sent to residents and the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy. People can use the information when deciding on how best to pursue remediation, and the State gains a better understanding of the prevalence of radon in Michigan.

For help understanding the test results, residents should contact the KCHD Environmental Health Division at 616-632-6900.

Radon occurs naturally in the ground and seeps into buildings through cracks or openings in the foundation of floors and walls. It occurs in both new and old homes. The EPA and the U.S. Geological Survey have developed a map of risk zones for the United States which can be viewed by clicking here. Kent County is typically categorized as having a moderate to high levels of radon.

The KCHD podcast “A Matter of Public Health” recorded two episodes dedicated to educating people about the issue. In the first episode, residents will learn what radon is, how prevalent it is in Michigan, and how often testing should be done in homes.

In the second episode, the discussion focuses on how to get rid of the radon, how to select a contractor, and how to avoid getting ripped off by unscrupulous contractors. Guests include KCHD subject matter experts, Michigan’s top radon expert, the President of the National Radon Safety Board, and the Better Business Bureau of West Michigan.

According to the U.S. Census, there are about 22.5 million empty nest holes in the United States, however there is little material in helping parents weather the transition.

In November, Terri DeBoer released her book “Brighter Skies Ahead: Forecasting a Full Life When You Empty the Nest.” The book provides personal insight mixed with humor on 50 strategies DeBoer has discovered for weathering that transition to an empty nest.

This Wednesday, DeBoer, who is a meteorologist for WOTV and a host of EightWest, will be the featured guest at Mr. Sid’s Video Series at Marge’s Donut Den. At the 2 p.m. program, DeBoer will discuss her new book and talk about some of her strategies.

Operating by the often-used “3-Rs” recycling slogan of “reduce, reuse, recycle”, Kent County Department of Public Works opened its new Grand Rapids administrative offices on Wealthy Street Jan. 6 — a facility that also includes a soon-to-open recycling center, an education center, an electronics drop-off station and not only a SafeChem drop-of station but also a “SafeChem Swap Shop”.

Maybe it should be 4-Rs, with “reimagine” added to the slogan.

Continuing its efforts exemplified by its slogan “Reimagine Trash”, with the county’s Department of Public Works  (DPW) website actually being reimaginetrash.org, Kent County officials and DPW leaders held a facility ribbon cutting Jan. 6 to officially open the facility, with its returning and new offerings.

“The new administration center brings our team together and makes it easier for the community to connect with our department and services,” Dar Baas, DPW director, said in supplied material. “The facilities are designed to foster collaboration.”

And that collaboration is exemplified by the new dual SafeChem operations.

“The SafeChem Drop-off station and Swap Shop are a real asset for our community,” Baas said. “Not only do they keep hazardous materials out of area landfills and the environment, they also provide people free products to avoid them being discarded in the first place.”

The “drop and shop” operation is offered all five of the county-managed chemical drop-off locations, including ones in the Kentwood and Wyoming area.

The Wealthy Street Recycling and Administration Center located at 1045 Wealthy St. SW, adjacent to the Recycling and Education Facility, the SafeChem Drop-off station, SafeChem Swap Shop and electronics recycling services. The DPW offices were previously co-located with the Kent County Road Commission on Scribner Avenue and the property was sold in 2021.

All of Kent County’s SafeChem stations — there are several, with varying days and hours, including one each in the cities of Kentwood and Wyoming —  allow residents to drop off household waste like cleaners, garden or garage products. The Wealthy Street location also includes a Swap Shop where products that are in good condition can be offered at no cost.

(The reopening the residential recycling drop-off station on Wealthy Street, which has been closed during construction, will be announced soon on reimaginetrash.org, according to a DPQ statement.)

The Kentwood SafeChem site remained open after the closure of the city’s satellite recycling-drop off.

Kent County leadership, veterans groups meet, discuss next steps on Veterans Millage renewal plans

The Kent County Board of Commissioners’ Veterans Millage Renewal Subcommittee, led by City of Wyoming’s (District 8) commissioner Dan Burrill, held an initial meeting in December to discuss and begin action on a planned August 2022 countywide vote on the renewal of an existing Veterans Millage first passed in 2014.

The meeting included several local veterans groups but was focused on the work of the Kent County Veterans Services (KCVS) office and its associated Veterans Services Advisory Committee. The KVCS provides dedicated services to veterans of active United States military service and their dependents, with a current staff of nine full- or part-time employees under the direction of manager Martha Burkett and including six veterans who provide direct service and a contract Veteran Support Coordinator who is also a veteran.

A second meeting of the group was set for will be Tuesday, Jan. 18, from 1-3 p.m., in room 311 of the Kent County Administrative Building, downtown Grand Rapids, at 300 Monroe Avenue NW. (and not at the KCVS building on Fuller Avenue).

The meetings are open to the public, veterans and non-veterans alike, according to supplied material.

The decision to take the renewal request to the voters would eventually need to be approved by the Board of Commissioners.

In November 2014, Kent County voters approved a Dedicated Veterans Millage, an eight year, 0.05 mills tax that, at that time, would raise about $1 million a year and was estimated to cost the owner of a $200,000 home approximately $5 annually, according to the county website.

Due to several factors — including the 1978, voter-approved amendment to the Michigan Constitution which included a number of provisions related to state and local taxes and now commonly known as the Headlee Amendment — the actual tax collection decreased from 0.05 mills to 0.0482 in 2021.

Statewide, 51 of Michigan’s 83 counties posted a millage dedicated to veterans in 2020.

$750k grant allows Wyoming police to add six officers

Thanks to a federal grant totaling three-quarters of a million dollars, the Wyoming Department of Public Safety hopes to curtail gun violence and violent crimes by adding six community police officers to its department.

The Department was awarded the $750,000 Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) Hiring Program grant from the United States Department of Justice. The Wyoming City Council accepted the grant at its Dec. 20 council meeting. With the grant money, the Department will be able to add six officers to its department, bring the police department’s total number of sworn officers to 99.

“We have seen a significant increase in violent crimes,” said Capt. Timothy Pols, the department’s public relations officer. “Last year, we had eight homicides, which is an all-time high for the city.”

Pols said the department could not contribute the increase specifically to COVID, as there was a rise before the pandemic started. However, current conditions have impacted the community with there having been an increase in reported shootings involving property damage and people being hurt, he said.

The Wyoming Department of Public Safety has been searching for funding to help increase its numbers. The COPS Hiring Program is designed to reduce crime and advance public safety through community policing by proving direct support to state, local, and tribal law enforcement agencies nationwide. The program funding supports the hiring of career law enforcement officers to increase an agency’s community policing capacity and crime prevention. The funding covers up to 75 percent of the approved entry-level salaries and fringe benefits of full-time officers for three years. The city is required to cover the remaining 25 percent.

The COPS Hiring Program is an open solicitation. For the 2021 fiscal year, COPS received 590 applications from about every state and U.S. territory. It awarded grants to 183 state, local, and trial law enforcement agencies totaling $139,232,523 to support the hire of 1,066 full-time officers and deputies.

The Wyoming Department of Public Safety was one of four police departments in Michigan to receive a COPS Hiring Program grant. The other cities to receive funding were Battle Creek, West Branch, and Hamtramck. Wyoming received the highest awarded grant monies out of the four Michigan cities that received funding.

“Obviously this is a great thing for the City of Wyoming and it is really hard to turn money like that down,” said Mayor Jack Poll during the Dec. 20 City Council meeting. The grant does come with the requirement that the city fund the new six positions for at least 12 months beyond the three-year time period. The department hopes through additional local funding to maintain the new positions beyond the three-year timeframe.

The COPS Hire Program grant is dedicated to community policing. With the six new hires, the Wyoming Department of Public Safety will be able to move seasoned officers into its Community Services Unit, which currently consists of four Community Services Officers, three School Resource Officers, and a supervisor. By expanding the community policing, the Wyoming Department of Public Safety hopes to curtail gun violence and violent crimes through expanded evening coverage; adding a dedicated crime analyst office, gang intelligence officer, dedicated apartment liaison, and dedicated hotel/motel liaison; and increasing participation with juvenile offender reentry programs and area summer camps comprised predominately of at-risk youth along with high visibility patrols, especially in high crime areas and other community policing initiatives.

Currently, the Department is in the hiring process, Pols said adding that they have interviewed some strong candidates.

“With all that has happened in the past couple of years with COVID, I believe it has given us some dedicated candidates who have a good understanding about what is involved with today’s police work,” Pols said.

The department is seeking to fill the six positions along with several other positions that will be opening up due to retirements this year. Pols said the goal is to have the positions filled by the end of 2022.

As the outgoing chair of the Kent County Board of Commissioners looked back on a list of the county’s 2021 accomplishments — not the least of which was being a key partner in the West Michigan’s efforts to battle the pandemic — the board selected new leaders to begin 2022.

The Board of Commissioners unanimously selected Stan Stek (District 6) as chair and Emily Brieve (District 10) as vice-chair during a Monday, Jan. 3, organizational meeting. Stek, who had served as vice-chair, takes over as chair from Mandy Bolter.

As incoming vice-chair, Brieve will lead the Legislative and Human Services Committee.  Commissioner Diane Jones (District 4) will continue to serve in her role as chair of the Finance and Physical Resources Committee.

“It is truly an honor to be chosen to lead this Board,” Stek said in supply material. “I look forward to working together to maintain our strong fiscal position, improve residents’ quality of life, enhance the overall delivery of services, and ensure continued economic growth for the region.”

And, in a statement from the county detailing some of the board’s 2021 accomplishments, the wide-ranging duties and efforts of the county board were detailed.

Financially, the board late last year approved a balanced 2022 budget of $527 million, including $454.8 million for operating expenditures, of which $16.7 million will be capital improvements. It also maintained maintained its dual AAA bond rating from S&P Global and Moody’s Investors Service — for the 23rd consecutive year.

The county also was a key player in the local effort to combat the COVID-19 pandemic and to distribute federal funds meant to do the same.

The West Michigan Vaccine Clinic, created in response to the need to vaccinate as many people as possible, saw Kent County, Mercy Health Saint Mary’s, and Spectrum Health develop one of the largest vaccination clinics in the country at DeVos Place — with more than 231,000 COVID-19 vaccinations administered between January and May 2021.

In addition, the county Health Department added three new mobile health units in 2021. These self- contained mobile health facilities have been used extensively to target vulnerable populations in the administration of COVID-19 and other vaccinations, HIV testing, and community outreach. To date, more than 1,000 county residents have received COVID-19 vaccinations at clinics supported by these units, according to supplied material.

“Despite the various pressures placed on public services this past year, our Board and staff were dedicated to continuing to provide excellent service to our community,” Bolter said in supplied material. “While we continued to meet the challenges of the pandemic, we also maintained a strong focus on meeting the needs of continued economic growth.”

Other stated accomplishments, according to the county statement, included expansion and bonding of The Gerald R. Ford International Airport; the hiring of the county’s first Chief Inclusion Officer “to underscore our commitment to fully embedding diversity, equity, and inclusion in our strategic priorities and service delivery”; and establishing three new “issue-focused” subcommittees (Broadband, Judicial Resources and Veterans Millage Review).

The county also funded county Sheriff’s Office cruiser and deputy body cameras, and secured an expansion of the Chief Hazy Cloud Park into a 395-acre natural preserve along the Grand River and allow for future trail expansion to connect multiple communities.

Incoming leadership has long local history

Stek, whose District 6 includes the city of Walker and part of the city of Grand Rapids, was first elected to the commission in 2014. He is an attorney at Miller Canfield and, according to supplied material, has a long history of serving his community on various boards and committees.

Among his current and past work is serving on the Crisis Center Task Force, Dedicated Millage Committee, Kent County Community Action Board, Kent County Workforce Development Board, Lakeshore Regional Entity, Millennium Park Advisory Board, Michigan Works!, Network 180, Senior Millage Allocation Board, Substance Use Disorder Oversight Board, and Walker Citizens Advisory Committee.

Brieve, whose District 10 includes Gaines Township and part of Caledonia Township, has served in the board since 2014. She works for her family’s small business, FastoolNow.com.

She currently chairs the Board of Public Works and Community Health Advisory committees and is a member of the Gerald R. Ford International Airport Authority, Grand Rapids Public Museum, and West Michigan Sports Commission.

Lee middle & high school building contractor approved; repairs, reimagining set to start

The long saga of a much-anticipated makeover of the Wyoming Lee Middle and High School building will move into high gear early this year as, following the final approval of a general contractor late last year, construction will begin as soon as spring weather allows.

In 2020, Godfrey-Lee Public Schools district voters voted to support a bonding proposal which would allow the district to put out bonds for about $18 million for a wide range of building and facility projects.

At the time, the district not only faced the task of modernizing portions of its middle and high school that are nearly 100 years old, it had to make repairs to a portion of the building which collapsed in 2019. But modernization and repairs are only the most obvious part of the historic and still bustling building.

“As far as the new construction, I am most excited for us to begin to make our facilities worthy of the amazing students that we serve,” Eric Mockerman, district Board of Education president, said to WKTV. “I am (also) happy that our building will be more accessible to our community in multiple ways and it will overall be easier to navigate throughout the facility. I am very excited for the addition of our new band room that will better fit the needs of the phenomenal program that will use that space.”

According to information provided by Dirk Weeldreyer, district interim superintendent, the building effort will be a two-year project, expected to be completed in the 2023-24 school year.

Among the projects are the reconstructed portion of the building along Havana Street in the space where the building collapsed and was demolished. An existing entrance to the gym will be redone, and the area demolished turned into a new media center on the first floor and new classroom spaces on the second floor.

Also planned is a new cafeteria and multi-purpose space that will be built in the area that is currently the unused courtyard of the building. And there will be a new band room addition on the north side of the building.

“Our current construction timeline calls for activity on our new/rebuilt spaces to commence in early spring 2022,” Weeldreyer wrote in an email. “We will need to work from the ‘inside out’ on these new spaces, so the first thing to happen will be excavation and preparation of the interior site (inside the current courtyard).”

There will also be interior renovation work in the existing classroom spaces starting in the summer of 2022, and renovation will continue over the subsequent 18 months or more.

Local musicians get hometown streaming platform through Kent District library

Local musicians seeking an audience – and audiences seeking local music – have a new way to find each other.

KDL Vibes, a streaming service featuring music by more than 40 West Michigan artists, went live in early December.

David Specht, digital marketing strategist for KDL, said anyone can navigate to the site at vibes.kdl.org and start listening.

“As a library, it’s our responsibility to provide quality, worthwhile, important content to our patrons,” he said. “We saw this as an opportunity to do that.”

  

KDL Vibes brings local music to people who don’t have the means or the opportunity to go to live shows, and it also offers musicians a big new audience. The KDL serves hundreds of thousands of patrons, Specht said.

“Once I started researching the mission I was just really impressed and grateful for the initiative to perpetuate the local music scene throughout the community,” he said. “Personally, I’m hopeful it might turn a few folks on to my catalog. For the community, I hope that they take to the new service and discover some of their new favorite artists, music venues, and songs.”

You don’t need to live in Kent County or have a KDL library card to use KDL Vibes. But some services are available only to those with a KDL card.

“The advantage to having a KDL library card is that you can sign in with that card and pin favorite single songs and also full albums, so it builds a playlist for you,” Specht said.

About 15 libraries in the U.S. are offering the service, which is built on software called MUSICat.

Specht said there are a lot of music-loving staff members at the Kent District Library, and when they heard about the streaming platform being used in cities like Seattle and Austin, they got a team together to bring it to Kent County.

In September, the KDL had a six-week open submission period when local musicians could send in a sample track and brief bio. They got 130 submissions.

A team of curators active in the local music scene narrowed them down to the 43 that are on the site now. In addition to Specht, the curators are Andrea “SuperDre” Wallace, Ted Smith, Hugo Claudin, Gabriella De La Vega, Eric Green, Linda “Lady Ace Boogie” Tellis, Laura Nowe, and Jake Wunderink.

“We wanted to make sure we had a collection that represents the West Michigan music scene, doing our best to include music from all the different genres that the musicians here have to offer,” Specht said. That meant they had to bypass some great music if they already had enough in that genre, but the musicians who didn’t get in the first time will have another shot.

Open submission periods for musicians will be held twice a year in the spring and the fall, so the collection will keep growing. The next open submission will likely be in the late winter or early spring, Specht said.

Both the musicians and the curators are paid a $250 honorarium for their contributions to the site.

Specht said they will keep adding new music indefinitely, and they will have a rotating panel of curators so people with a variety of tastes get a chance to choose the music.

“It won’t be the same folks from one year to the next. That’s intentional, so we can give other people an opportunity to work on it,” he said. “I feel like the project will never grow stale.”

Following changed federal guidelines, county health department revises COVID quarantine protocols

The Kent County Health Department announced on Dec. 29 that it is changing its isolation and quarantine guidelines for people who have tested positive or been exposed to coronavirus to align with this week’s changes in U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) protocol.

The CDC has stated that science now shows the majority of COVID-19 transmission happens early in the illness, generally in the first one to two days before symptoms start and the two to three days thereafter, according to the Kent County Health Department (KCHD) announcement.

“Therefore, effective immediately, the new guidance shortens the isolation and quarantine periods under certain scenarios,” according the the KCHD announcement.

If an individual tests positive for COVID-19, the new isolation guidelines, regardless of vaccination status, are for the person to isolate for five days, and a person may leave isolation if they no longer have symptoms after five days, but those people are urged to continue to mask for an additional five days.

If an individual is exposed to someone with COVID-19, the new quarantine guidelines are:

For people who are not vaccinated, or if it has been more than six months since they received the second dose of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine or more than two months after receiving the J&J vaccine and have not received a booster, they should quarantine for five days followed by mask usage for five additional days.

People who have received a booster do not need to quarantine following an exposure but should wear a mask for 10 days after the exposure.

All persons who have been exposed should test five days after the exposure. A person who experiences symptoms during quarantine should be tested for COVID-19 and stay home until receiving a negative result.

“These new guidelines will mean less disruption to people’s lives and still slow the spread of the virus,” KCHD Medical Director Dr. Nirali Bora said in supplied material. “However, COVID-19 cases and deaths remain unacceptably high. We encourage everyone who is eligible to get vaccinated and boosted as soon as possible. Anyone who is experiencing symptoms should be tested as soon as possible.”
 

This new guidance applies to the public and may not apply to those residing in congregate living settings, schools, or people who work with individuals in high-risk groups.

The KCHD is currently updating all its guidance and communication materials to reflect the change in the isolation and quarantine guidelines.

 

Wyoming Lee boys basketball program moves into future with young talent, young coaches

The is no denying Wyoming Lee High School boys basketball team’s first-year head coach Dominic Shannon and his coaching staff have work in front of them to lead the Legends program out of some tough days.

But he has youth and talent on his side, both on and off the court. And he has his thin varsity team and still-building program buying into what he is teaching on and off the court.

“This program has been under construction for the past so many years, and just looking at the banners (on the gym wall) there has not been much activity. … we do have a lot of work to do,” Shannon said to WKTV at a recent practice. “But, at the same time, that is motivating us.”

What is also motivating the team is the communication, the trust, that is developing between a young team and a young coaching staff — Shannon is 35 years old and top assistant Landon Mitchner is 38.

“With us being younger, the relatability is there. The conversation is there. There is trust there,” Shannon said. “That is a buy-in strategy for coaches … they will understand the importance of what we say. I think our ages are a huge factor here.”

Another factor working in the favor of the Legends (or “Leyendas” in Spanish, a dominate second language in the district) is that while the varsity team is thin, with seven or eight players depending on injuries, there is talent on varsity and on the larger JV team.

And there, too, much of it is young.

“We have a very low count this year, but instead of discouraging us it has been pushing us,” Shannon said “We have some young talent”, specifically senior captain Dominic Burrell, junior Keontae Taylor and freshman Troy Fox — who was also named captain of the team.

Taylor is “the most athletic kid I have coached so far. … He is our fuel to the engine. … He is offensively gifted … When he goes, the team goes. … Honestly, I think he is an all state caliber talent.”

Burrell is a big man, with a rebounder’s body and a way with words — “His presence on the defensive end has been felt in all three games. He’s been an anchor for us. Communicating, making sure guys are in the right place. And he is a rebounding machine.”

And Fox is “a very young floor general. He’s a freshman but he is also very physical, we love his presence on the defense.”

“When those three guys are firing on all cylinders, we will be competitive.”

And the leadership the three bring is in practice as well as in games.

“We are raw on the edges but at the same time we have been growing with this leadership that has been flowing through the team,” Shannon said. “These young men set the table every single day in practice. They embody everything we are asking of the student athlete in regards to the classroom, being a leader, and they are also carrying it over, using their voice on the court.”

The team is only three games into Shannon’s leadership, but after a 0-4 record last year in a pandemic-ravaged season and a 4-17 record the year before, the Legends (1-2 overall) gained their first win of the young season just before the holiday break — 55-48 at Wellspring Prep.

The Legends will return to action Jan. 4, at home against Holton, and are playing a partial independent and partial Alliance League schedule (the league the school is moving to). Lee will also be the WKTV Featured game Friday, Feb. 18, as part of a girls and boys doubleheader against Byron Center Zion Christian (also Hall of Fame night).

“The win before break, I think it is good for the program,” Shannon said. “That win, the energy it generated, has carried over to practice.”

Coach Shannon: player, coach, mentor

Coach Shannon’s journey to Lee is really a return to Grand Rapids.

He graduated from East Kentwood High School in the early 2000s, and in 2010 he graduated from Saginaw Valley State University, where he played one year of college basketball.

He was a graduate assistant at Salem University and has coaching experience at the high school level, two years at Saranac and one as a varsity assistant at Forest Hills Central.

In addition to his coaching gig at Lee, Shannon is program director of All-In Sports, a sports training program with travel basketball teams.

And his background, Shannon said, made him understand that leading the Legends program is more than simply what happens on the court.

“The main thing, outside of the Xs and Os, outside the game, we want to make sure we are feeding the young man, preparing them for real life,” Shannon said of his and his assistant’s work. “The basketball, the Xs and Os, competing, that is what we are here for. (But) the main component of this basketball team, for me and my coaches, is making sure that we are challenging these young men to be better young men every single day.”

Wyoming residents rally around ‘Knight of 44th Street’ to keep him in the community

When Wyoming resident Matthew Gould posted his neighbor’s 10-foot suit of armor statue for sale, he wasn’t expecting the type of community outpouring that would cause his phone to ding constantly throughout the day.

“I don’t think after I posted the listing that I was even able to close my phone before it started dinging,” he said.

Few who have driven 44th Street heading east from U.S. 131 have missed the 10-foot statue sitting on the lawn of the Zoet home. According to Mabel Zoet, her husband Nelson, who was an auctioneer, often traveled to Laredo, Texas, where he would purchase the suits of armor statues, which were made in Mexico. He then would sell the seven-foot statues, she said.

“One day a friend said to him ‘Why don’t you put up a 10-foot one up?’” Zoet said. “So he put one up next to the flagpole.”

That was about 30 years ago, Zoet said. Now after 58 years in their home, Zoet is looking to downsize. So she decided to put the “tin man” up for sale, never realizing how much of a symbol it had become to the community and her neighbors.

“[I] used to live down the block from ‘my knight in shining armor,’” wrote Ruth Ann S. on the Grand Rapids Online Garage Sale Facebook page.

Fida K. wrote “I used to see this as my parents drove by that house as a young child!! I love/still love him!! Such an icon! Please keep him!”

“Oh I’m so sad to see this for sale,” wrote Amber M. “I remember walking past that thing when I was a little girl on the way to school and imagining the things we could do if we were inside it.”

“It’s like the only cool thing on 44th Street,” wrote John F.

In fact, so many people thought the statue was too “cool” to be moved that they encouraged a GoFundMe campaign to purchase the statue to keep it in the community. In less than 24 hours, the $500 was raised to purchase it.

Gould said the task now will be to find a new home for the statue.

 

“I feel like this needs to be put up in a park nearby or even downtown with a little plaque ‘The Knight of 44th St.’” wrote DK. “Crazy how this was something of significance to a lot of us growing up!”

Alex C. agreed. “This is a landmark icon, we need to preserve this art. Make it known, put the man’s name on a plaque at least.”

For now, Zoet said the statue can stay in her yard. Gould, who lives next door to Zoet, said his yard is also available until a permanent home can be found. Gould said he plans to reach out to city officials in 2022 as he works to secure the statue’s new home.

“…He was a childhood icon for me when my parents would take me to C’s Dairy and Dogs for the car shows,” wrote Josh W. “I’m forever thankful for this guy no matter where he goes.”

Wyoming City Council honors longtime public servant, Harold Voorhees

At its Monday council meeting, the Wyoming City Council recognized the two decades of contributions from former Kent County commissioner Harold Voorhees.

Voorhees, who had been involved in public service from the late 1980s, retired from public service in 2020 when he decided not to seek re-election as a Kent County commissioner.

Wyoming Council member Kent Vanderwood said he remembers when Voorhees came to him about running for the state legislature in 1986.

“He did not win that election, but he went on to serve on the city council, as mayor and eventually as state representative,” Vanderwood said. “Harold is the reason I am sitting here tonight.”

Voorhees was elected to the Wyoming City Council in 1987 and two years later, he was elected mayor. He resigned his position as mayor in 1992 to serve as the 77th District State House representative, which he did for three terms from 1993-1998. In 2000, Voorhees was elected as the 8th District Kent County commissioner and served on the commission for 20 years.

At Monday night’s meeting, Mayor Jack Poll read a proclamation thanking Voorhees for his years of service as a Kent County commissioner. Poll noted that Voorhees’s wife, Joanne, also has served in various public positions, including replacing her husband as the 77th District State House representative in 1998 as well as serving on the city council.

“We appreciate what you have done for this community, you have been leaders,” Poll said.

“Thank you Mayor Poll and council members, and City Manager Curtis Holt,” Voorhees said. “What a wonderful Christmas gift to be together with family and friends in a familiar venue of government…I thank each of you for your time, your talents and what you do for our city and we can always be proud putting up the Wyoming flag. This is a great place to be.”

Increased usage at Wyoming’s parks demonstrates its important health role

If you wonder how much of a resource of health and public welfare the City of Wyoming’s parks have served during the pandemic, consider this: reservations at the parks was at 30,000 hours, a 77 percent increase over 2020.

This was part of the 2021 annual Community Impact Report released last week by the City of Wyoming Community Services Department’s Parks and Recreation.

“Today, access to recreation resources have never been more sought after or needed for public health and welfare,” said Rebecca Rynbrandt, director of community services for the City of Wyoming. “This report provides the public with the transparency needed to affirm we are investing tax dollars wisely, meeting, and in many ways exceeding, resident expectations in providing parks and recreation services during the pandemic.”

The community impact report highlights the ways parks and recreation programs from the past year promoted community health and wellness, child development, economic development, and provided many avenues to build unity and community strength.

 

Rynbrandt noted during the Dec. 13 city council work session that in 2020-2021 year, the department offered 251 programs. During the epicenter of the pandemic in 2020, it offered 158 programs.

“Of course we saw a significant increase in use of our parks and recreation resources and facilities because that is what [people] were encouraged to do, get outside in order to play,” Rynbrandt said.

Another example of increase parks and recreation was the softball program which had a record year of 1,200 participants during the spring and summer.

Rynbrandt said staff worked to adapt by offering virtual programs and working with outdoor programming. When programs were able to return inside, staff ensured that the required social distancing, mask requirements, etc, were met.

Many programs this past year were modified to ensure public safety during the pandemic and exemplified the ways that parks and recreation services are essential to community resiliency and sustainability. Once such an example of adaptability was the Rec at Home kits with families stopping by Wyoming’s city hall to pick up the kits.

“For those of you who may have been here we had people coming to the back door and picking up so that we were able to adapt and provide that family a positive time alternative they could do with their families in the presence of their home or they could go outside in a public park,” Rynbrandt said.

Parks and recreation is critical to child development, Rynbrandt said. TEAM, 12, which is funded through the U.S. Department of Education’s 21st Community Learning Centers grant, provides summer and after school programs for students in Godwin, Godfrey-Lee and Wyoming public schools. The program served about 900 children this year, which was down from pre-pandemic, which would average between 1,200 to 1,400 students per year.

Despite the limitations due to the pandemic, the program had 121 children on wait lists, according to Rynbrandt.

 

“[TEAM 21] is one of the most important programs where we impact the mental, physical, social, and scholastic health of our community’s children, Rynbrandt said.

The city also has an impact on the senior population. Through its partnership with the Meals on Wheels program, the city was able to provide 7,488 meals for socially isolated older adults. Rynbrand noted that this was a drive through program at the senior center.

 

Vaccine clinics and tree plantings were other activities provided through the Wyoming Department of Parks and Recreation.

 

As for the financial overview, about 52 percent of the Parks and Recreation budget goes directly into park facilities and maintenance, six percent is in the senior center, eight percent into recreation, and about 20 percent into TEAM 21, which is through the grant program.

 

The city features 23 parks and recreation facilities, including the Wyoming Senior Center, located throughout the city’s 700 acres of parkland.

In love and health: Handling grief through the holidays

When a loved one dies, we experience a great amount of stress. Not only are hearts broken, but disruptions to daily routines and holiday celebrations can take a huge emotional toll. As one of the most common causes of stress, losing a dear friend, family member, or spouse can lead to serious illness, including depression.

 

Those suffering from a loss during the holidays should engage in practical self-care and tend to the essentials such as eating a well-balanced diet.

Stress from loss can show up as negative attitudes or feelings of being out of control. Headaches, neck pain and back pain are common among people who are grieving. So, chiropractic adjustment is one practical way to deal with the general stress as well as the physical manifestations of grief.

The Harvard Medical School Health blog’s “A Guide to Getting through Grief” counsels those mourning a loss to engage in practical self-care and “Tend to the essentials.” Eat a well-balanced diet that includes plenty of fruit, veggies, lean proteins, and a daily multivitamin. Stay hydrated. Make sure to stay on your prescribed medications. And get plenty of sleep—grief can really tire you out. Don’t overdo caffeine or alcohol as both can sabotage a good night’s sleep.

 

Even if you feel like a slug, try to do a little more exercise than usual. It will not only boost your energy levels but also ease depression, anxiety, and anger. Push yourself to take care of yourself each day. What would make you feel a little better? A funny movie, coffee with a friend, a phone conversation with a family member? If you were a caregiver of the person you lost, now is your chance to take care of you.

Because of the ongoing toll that COVID-19 is taking on us here in Michigan, don’t be surprised to find out that you are not alone in your grief. You might even want to join a grief support group. Many of the meet safely over virtual formats. The State of Michigan Family Center has put together this guide listing grief support by county. In addition, you can find a list of local church-based grief support groups here. Ele’s Place specifically helps children who are grieving. Local hospice organizations and mental health care providers can also help you walk through your grief.

The Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center offers these “7 Things to Remember When Dealing with Loss.”

  • It won’t feel like this forever. 
  • You can handle it, even when you feel like you can’t.
  • Be gentle with yourself. 
  • Think in cycles, not lines. 
  • Your feelings are normal. 
  • Grief can beget meaning. 
  • You’re not alone.

Godfrey-Lee Public Schools’ new superintendent eager to get to work on ‘exciting’ district agenda

Godfrey-Lee Public Schools, after selecting Dr. Mike Burde, currently Assistant Superintendent at Kenowa Hills Public Schools, to be the next GLPS superintendent last month, the school board approved his contract at its meeting Monday, Dec. 13.

Superintendent Burde’s first day on the job will be Jan. 3. And a long list of “exciting “ work awaits him.

“It’s an honor to be selected as the next superintendent of Godfrey-Lee Public Schools,” Burde said to WKTV. “I am eager to get started in listening, learning, and building relationships in the schools and in the community. With bond construction projects scaling up, new curriculum programs, and forward-thinking continuous improvement efforts, it’s an exciting time to be a Legend!”

Burde will work with Interim Superintendent Dirk Weeldreyer as he transitions out of this role.

The Board, in a previous statement, said it was “especially thankful for Mr. Weeldreyer’s leadership” since the beginning of the school year.

“We have been fortunate to have the time to conduct a thorough search, and it has been time well spent,” GLPS board President Eric Mockerman said in the statement.

Mockerman also told WKTV he and the district is excited to have Burde take over in the new year.
 

“I am excited to get to work with Dr. Burde. He comes to us with a wealth of experience that I believe will lead Godfrey-Lee well into the future,” Mockerman said. “While we were going through the interview process the board was impressed by Dr. Burde’s experience as well as the thoroughness that he had planned for his first 90 days.

“I spoke personally with several of Mike’s references through the hiring process and I also had the opportunity to speak to several of his current board members who backed up 100 percent what was told to me by his references. Mike … is more than ready to hit the ground running with all of the work that needs to be done. I think he is an excellent fit for Godfrey-Lee.”

Superintendent Burde, according to a biography on the Kenowa Hills Public Schools website, become the district’s assistant superintendent in 2012. Since then, “he has supported the district’s implementation of building and district improvement plans that support student-centered education; which the district calls Personal Mastery. Dr. Burde has also been an active advocate for the K-12 instructional technology; assisting in the planning and implementation of district’s ongoing 1:1 technology initiative. In addition, he’s worked to develop strong partnerships with organizations such as KnowledgeWorks, the Michigan Department of Education, and the Michigan Association of State and Federal Program Specialists (MASFPS).”

He earned his Bachelor of Arts in Education from Spring Arbor University, Masters of Arts in Educational Leadership from Western Michigan University, as well as a Doctorate of Philosophy in Educational Leadership from Western Michigan University.

For 15 years, Dr. Burde has been involved in public school administration at the elementary, secondary, and central office levels. He began his professional career at Ionia Public Schools, where he served as a middle school social studies teacher before taking on various leadership responsibilities at Belding Areas Schools.

Burde and his wife, Jacqlyn, have two children: Katherine and Marilyn.

Kentwood, Wyoming have open sites for storm yard waste debris

The brute force winds that came through West Michigan now has many residents looking for places to discard the yard waste. Fortunately, for those living in cities of Kenwood and Wyoming, they have options.

Today, the City of Kentwood reopened its leaf and brush drop-off sites, which will be open through Dec. 18. The purpose is to help residents dispose of fallen leaves and tree debris.

“We’re reopening our drop-off sites to help residents clean up after Saturday’s windstorm as well as accommodate the late leaf drop this year,” Public Works Director Chad Griffin said. “With the warm temperatures expected this week, this is a great opportunity for residents to take care of the leaves, trees and branches that have fallen on their properties.”

Residents may drop off brush, sticks, tree limbs, logs, loose leaves and loose grass clippings through Saturday, Dec. 18 at the Kentwood Department of Public Works, 5068 Breton Ave. SE. The drop-off sites are open noon-8 p.m. Monday-Friday and 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday.

The service is available to Kentwood residents only. Staff will be on-site checking for proof of residency and appropriate materials. Materials that cannot be accepted include paper and plastic bags, trash, dirt, concrete, asphalt, tires, rocks, stones, construction materials, glass and metal.

City of Wyoming

The City of Wyoming operates a year round leaf and yard waste disposal site at 2600 Burlingame Ave. SW.

Winter hours for the site are 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday – Thursday. The site is closed on Sunday.

Yard waste should be sorted in leaves and grass piles and brush piles which may include sticks, branches less than eight-fee long, bushes, and stumps less than three-feet in diameter.

The site does not accept leaf bags , plastic bags, sod, rocks, stones, sand, treated wood, fencing, shingles, concrete, asphalt, furniture, carpet, glass, garbage or basically anything that is not naturally grown in a yard.

There is an attendant at the site with residents having to show proof of residency.

Power outages can be reported to Consumers Energy online or by phone at 800-477-5050. In the case of an emergency, such as a downed power line, call 911.
