Happy weekend, everyone.

Make sure to get out there as summer begins to wind down. If you’re looking for a few ideas, I have put together my Top 5 things to do, which you can find exclusively on WKTV Journal.

5. Wild Ones Garden Tour & Fundraiser

Wild Ones River City Chapter will show you how to add native plants, shrubs and trees to your garden to provide food, shelter and habitat for birds and beneficial insects.


“Removing invasive plants, reducing lawn size, and using natural care also helps heal the earth. Even small changes can make a difference,” according to its website. To learn more about these benefits, the Wild Ones River City Chapter is having a garden tour and fundraiser on Monday (Aug. 1).



You can visit the Native Plant Education Garden at 920 Cherry Street SE, Grand Rapids, which will feature more than 80 species of native plants. Wild Ones members will be on hand to talk about the evolution of the garden and answer questions. The tour is free. Then, across the street, you can enjoy a bite to eat and a beer at Brewery Vivant, which will donate a portion of their proceeds to Wild Ones River City Chapter. Hours are noon to 10 p.m. More info at rivercitygrandrapids.wildones.org.

4. Wyoming/Kentwood Summer Concerts

The seasons are coming to a close.

  • In Kentwood, The Grand Rapids Jazz Orchestra (July 28), the Moxie Strings (Aug. 4) and Brena (Aug. 11) close out the Summer Concert Series on the lawn behind Kentwood City Hall.

3. Last Sundays Outdoor Market, Grand Rapids

Looking for something to do on Sunday? Make sure to check out “Last Sundays,” which is a monthly outdoor market at Bridge Street Market in Grand Rapids. It features a variety of local makers, vendors, farmers, food carts, samplings and more. It takes place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday (July 31) on the corner of Bridge Street and Seward Avenue. 2. Ballpark Series: Around the Horn with the Grand Rapids Symphony

I have mentioned this series a few times this summer, that’s because you will love this old, historic ballpark that dates back to 1937, and located on the West Side of Grand Rapids. The Ballpark Series at Sullivan (formerly Valley) Field is one of many events spearheaded by a group called Fans of Valley Field. On Saturday (July 30) the Grand Rapids Symphony makes its first appearance, along with local legends Rick Reuther and The Tom Hagen Trio. Admission is free, but tickets are needed.

The symphony performs “Peter and the Wolf,” as well as another piece, followed by Reuther and the trio. An Instrument Petting Zoo will be set up for kids to touch, play and experience instruments. There also will be an art area with other activities as well before the Symphony performance. Gates (and bar) open at 5 p.m. The show begins at 6:30 p.m. Food is also available. The Neighborhood Concert Series is presented by Meijer and underwritten by the Wege Foundation with sponsorship from Wolverine Worldwide, David & Judy Frey, BDO, Fox Motors, Chuck & Julie Frayer, Hung and Elsie Liang Fund for Music, United Bank and Delta Dental of Michigan.

1. Global Water Fest, Grand Rapids

My friend Ace Marasigan of the GR Asian Foundation reached out recently to tell me about the 2nd Annual Global Water Fest Grand Rapids on Saturday (July 30) at Canal Park, 941 Monroe Ave. NW, and on the Grand River. The family-friendly event features Dragon Boat Races, a globally-themed variety of food vendors, live music and entertainment. The Dragon Boat Races begin at 8 a.m. The winner gets $500 for their team and $500 for their non-profit of choice – Prize money sponsored by Kim Nhung Superstore. Youth Fishing Derby is from noon to 4 p.m. and includes free fishing poles while supplies last. Global Water Fest is from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and is presented by Downtown Grand Rapids Inc., City of Grand Rapids Office of Special Events, Office of Diversity and Inclusion, and Mobile GR. I love late July. It’s like the sweet spot of summer.

You still have plenty of time to visit your favorite vacation spot. Maybe take in a West Michigan Whitecaps game. Go to the zoo. Or discover something new.

Fall and back-to-school shopping can wait.


Here are a few things to consider this week and early August.



Let’s support local, community events this summer as a couple of popular music series in the area are starting to wind down.

Wyoming Concerts in the Park

On Tuesday, July 26, the Wyoming series at Lamar Park continues with country singer Bernadette Kathryn, followed by Grupo Latin (Aug. 2). All shows begin at 7 p.m. Admission is free. More info: Wyoming Concerts in the Park Facebook page.

Kathryn, the self-proclaimed Detroit Country Rebel, is ready to light up the stage at Lamar Park.

“This is going to be a high-octane, full-throttle, audience engaging show that will leave them wanting more,” said Kathryn, who will perform with her Lonely Days Band. “We play new and old country, classic rock, and you might even find a few pop songs disguised as country. We call our genre ‘Hot Rock’n Country’ because we can ‘chicken fry’ anything.”

Kathryn said they’ll play Reba, Miranda Lambert, Gretchen Wilson, Luke Combs, “some of my originals, and many other songs that you can hear on the radio.”

Kentwood Summer Concert Series

  • The Moxie Strings (Thursday, Aug. 4)

Diana Ladio and Alison Lynn hold Bachelor of Music degrees in music performance and music education, which have given each the technical foundation to explore the limits of her instrument and helped the group build a reputation for musical excellence. Their new album, “Live & Plugged In,” just reached No. 1 on the Billboard Classical Crossover Charts.

Lynn said the band’s polished, high-energy show continues to redefine strings’ role in contemporary music, and offers audience members a diverse, fun, musical experience.

“We use a variety of audio effects pedals. The Moxie Strings compose the majority of their pieces and arrange melodies from many countries, resulting in a genre-blurring blend of ear-catching, mainstream melodies and foot-stomping, rock-influenced rhythms.”

  • Brena

Brena performs July 28 at Cutler Park in Cutlerville as part of the Sounds of Summer series, and on Aug. 11 as part of the Kentwood Summer Concert Series.

Brena Band is a one-stop-shop when it comes to wedding entertainment. Their six member band, featuring guitars, drums, horns, violin, keyboards and tight vocal harmonies, will keep your guests dancing all night long. Their wide variety of songs offer a little something for everyone; ranging from oldies, to current top 40 hits, classic rock to smooth R&B, country to high energy dance music, and everything in between.


All Kentwood concerts take place from 7-8:30 p.m. on the lawn behind Kentwood City Hall, 4900 Breton Ave. SE. Admission is free. A variety of food trucks also will be on hand.

Looking ahead to next weekend, the 86th annual Byron Days Festival returns with an arts and craft show, 5k run, pancake breakfast, live music, kids zone activities, food trucks, classic car show, fireworks and more. It’s that time of year when everything is happening.

In fact, it might be too much.

I’ll be at the West Michigan Whitecaps game on Friday as part of LMCU Night and the Whitecaps’ Copa de la Diversion series when they compete as Las Calaveras (ticket info at milb.com/west-michigan).

But on the same night I have two other events I would love to attend, and both of them are in my Top 5 list of things to do, which you can find exclusively on WKTV Journal.

5. Kent County Amateur Golf Championship

Who loves to golf? And to compete? The beautiful Kaufman Golf Course in Wyoming will host a few tournaments this summer, including the Kent County Amateur Golf Championships July 16-17 (a few spots may still be open) and a 3-man scramble next weekend (July 23). You can register at 616golf.com. Registration is also available for the Kent County Senior Amateur (55+) at Kaufman on July 30-31. 4. Mid-Life Crisis Band, Brews at the Bridge

It’s hard to believe, but it seems like yesterday that this popular cover band was jamming at private parties, charity events and even headlining their own shows. They all had day jobs as professionals, but they loved to hang out and jam on the weekends. The Mid-Life Crisis band officially calls it quits after 20 years with one last show, which is at Brews at the Bridge from 6-9 p.m. Friday (July 15) at Leonard Field, 7490 Thornapple River Dr. SE, in Ada. They invite all those who have been a part of their lives to come out for one last show. I know I have enjoyed writing stories and becoming friends with them over the years.  “In the end, it’s all about the music and friendship, and it all kind of makes sense,” said Steve Bloom, who will join the group on percussion. 3. Music Night

It’s a big music weekend in Grand Rapids.

Local favorite Lyle Lovett and his Large Band perform on Friday (July 15) at Meijer Gardens as part of the summer concert season. Tickets are sold out, but some tickets remain for a few shows this summer such as Rick Springfield with the Grand Rapids Symphony (July 20) and Buddy Guy + John Hiatt & The Goners (July 21). And, speaking of a local favorite, The Verve Pipe returns for a show Friday (July 15) at the Listening Lawn at Studio Park Piazza in downtown Grand Rapids. More info at listeningroomgr.com.

2. Comedy Night

And it’s a big weekend for comedy, too!

Stand up comedian Kevin Hart is on his Reality Check Tour, which makes a stop Saturday (July 16) at Van Andel Arena. Go to vanandelarena.com for ticket availability.

And the voice of Pure Michigan, Tim Allen, performs two shows at 5 and 8 p.m. Saturday (July 16) at DeVos Performance Hall in Grand Rapids. These shows were originally scheduled for 2020. Go to devosperformancehall.com for ticket availability.

1. The Music Man at Circle Theatre

The six-time, Tony Award-winning musical returns for a three-week run thanks to Circle Theatre. This family-friendly comedy is a classic! Who doesn’t love watching the drama, and comedy, unfold as fast-talking traveling salesman Harold Hill cons the folks of River City, Iowa into organizing a local band. Just as everything is going according to plan, life happens, and Hill falls for Marian, the local librarian. It’s a great show. Performances are July 14-16, 20-24 and 27-30 at the Performing Arts Center at Aquinas College. My lovely wife Pam and I hope to see the show because our nieces, Christina and Josie Gonzalez, are in this current production. Yes, we’re so proud of them! See you at the show. A couple more events taking place this weekend:

  • The Upheavel Festival, (featuring Breaking Benjamin, Disturbed and many others), is July 15-16 at Belknap Park in Grand Rapids. More info at facebook.com/UpheavalFestival.

How’s the summer treating you?

I’ve been enjoying the National Cherry Festival in Traverse City with fireworks, concerts and cherries, of course.

If you still want to make the trip up north, the festival continues with many activities like the cherry pie eating contest, and the big Cherry Royale Parade at 11:15 a.m. Saturday. The remaining concerts feature 1964 The Tribute on Thursday (July 7), ZZ Top on Friday (July 8) and Boyz II Men on Saturday (July 9). Learn more at cherryfestival.org.

5. “Seven Brides For Seven Brothers,” Barn Theatre

Summer is a great time to take in a play. Whether it’s community theater or a Broadway touring musical, you can usually find something taking place in the region. One unique destination is the Barn Theatre School in Augusta, about 50 miles south and just east of Kalamazoo. In its 76th season, the school’s advanced theater training program promotes the concept that artists, performers, designers, technicians, stage managers, and everyone should have broadly based experiences through an apprentice program. And each summer they put on a variety of shows where the students produce every aspect of the experience. They are parking attendants, ushers and even the bartenders. Along with celebrity guest actors, the school has also featured future stars such as Jennifer Garner, Dana Delany, Lauren Graham and many more. My lovely wife Pam and I recently saw the first show of the season, “Seven Brides For Seven Brothers,” a musical based on the classic MGM 1954 film about settlers in 1850 Oregon. The show was great, but so was the whole experience of a show set in a barn. Get a pizza or drink before the show or stay after each performance for a special “Shed Bar Show” where the actors and guest actors come to entertain in the Rehearsal Bar. Advance reservations are encouraged for those productions. Performances of “Seven Brides For Seven Brothers” continue through Sunday (July 10). More details at barntheatreschool.org/events. Some of the other shows this season: “Cinderella,” “GroundHog Day,” “Rock of Ages,” “Young Frankenstein,” “Misery,” “Escanaba in da Moonlight” and “Doubt.”

4. LAUP Fiesta, Holland

Another great weekend destination is Holland for the annual LAUP Fiesta at the Holland Civic Center. It always features great food, car show, and Latino musical acts. There will be activities for children, a bar for adults and mercado (artisan market). It always ends with a big baile (dance). The party begins at noon. 3. Food Truck Friday, Riverside Park

Have you been out to the popular “Food Truck Fridays” at Riverside Park this summer? Every week from 5-9 p.m. (through Sept. 2) you can expect anywhere from 12-17 food trucks. In its 6th season on the north side of Grand Rapids you can expect some of the area’s best-loved food trucks, as well as new ones, too. New this year is a Frequent Fridays Card that will offer you the chance to win prizes based on how many FTF you frequent. More details at https://www.facebook.com/GR8FoodTruckFridays/.

2. Randy McAllister, Lamar Park

Blues and Soul artist Randy McAllister will headline the next Wyoming Concerts in the Park show, which takes place each week at 7 p.m. Tuesdays at Lamar Park in Wyoming. Admission is free. The remaining shows include folk artist Monty Pride (July 19), country singer Bernadette Kathryn (July 26) and 13-piece Latin soul band Grupo Latin (Aug. 2) More info: Wyoming Concerts in the Park Facebook page. Can’t make it to the show? You can still enjoy the bands by watching WKTV-Channel 25 for the weekly airings at 5 p.m. Wednesday and 11 a.m. and 10 p.m. Saturday. More info at wktv.org/concerts.

1. Downtown Concerts

It’s another busy weekend in downtown Grand Rapids:

Death Cab for Cutie, the popular indie band from the early 2000s is back on the road and releasing a new album this fall. You can check them out Friday (July 8) at GLC Live at 20 Monroe Live in Grand Rapids. Ticket information at livenation.com.

The Doobie Brothers, the legendary band from the ‘70s and ‘80s, are on their 50th anniversary tour with Tom Johnston, Michael McDonald, Pat Simmons and John McFee on the road together for the first time in nearly 25 years. The band has sold nearly 50 million albums worldwide. The show is at 7:30 p.m.Sunday (July 10) at Van Andel Arena. Fans can expect to hear “Listen To The Music,” “Takin’ It To The Streets,” “Long Train Running,” “Black Water,” “What A Fool Believes,” “China Grove,” “Minute By Minute,” “It Keeps You Runnin’,” “Jesus Is Just Alright With Me” and many more. It’s Fourth of July already!

I’ll be in the Traverse City area all weekend long for the National Cherry Festival, and I’m looking forward to meeting up with friends, checking out the local food scene and maybe hitting up a few breweries.

5. “Beyond Van Gogh,” Grand Rapids

This immersive experience by the artist Vincent Van Gogh has been getting a lot of media attention. Opening night was canceled because of some technology issues. And on Wednesday a person felt faint and grabbed onto a pipe and drape that caused some art to fall on patrons? It did not cause the exhibition to close. The exhibition features the artist’s work on a larger-than-life scale as visitors see at least 300 of Van Gogh’s famous artworks through projection technology. It continues through July 9 at DeVos Place in downtown Grand Rapids. Check ticket availability at vangoghexpo.com/grand-rapids/.

4. Ballpark Series: Red, White and Blues

Our friends at Fans of Valley Field bring back their popular Ballpark Series with a show Saturday (July 2) at Sullivan (formerly Valley) Field, a Michigan landmark with a history that dates back to 1937. It is located on the West Side of Grand Rapids. Tickets are $10 at the door or $5 in advance. Gates open at 11:30 a.m. The lineup:

•1:00-2:00pm – Larry Mack Band

•2:15-3:15pm – Rochelle and The Spoilers

3. Sheryl Crow, Meijer Gardens

The “All I Wanna Do” singer – better known as Sheryl Crow – performs a sold out show Sunday (July 3) at Meijer Gardens. But you can still see Corinne Bailey Rae with Michigan act War & Treaty on July 6. Tickets information for all remaining concerts as well as availability can be found at meijergardens.org/calendar/summer-concerts-at-meijer-gardens. By the way, if you still want to see Sheryl Crow, you can join me on Saturday (July 2) when she performs at the National Cherry Festival in Traverse City. Ticket information at cherryfestival.org/.

2. Grand Rapids Fireworks

Activities begin at 6 p.m. Saturday (July 2) with games, food, vendors and live entertainment, which will lead up to the fireworks at 10:30 p.m. at Ah-Nab-Awen Park in downtown Grand Rapids (next to the Ford Museum). The Stone Soul Rhythm Band performs at 8 p.m. More info at https://4thofjulygr.com.

1.4th of July Celebration, Kentwood

Kentwood plans a full day of activities, including a pancake breakfast, 5K race, parade, carnival and fireworks show. The events will begin with a pancake breakfast at Kentwood Fire Station 1, 4775 Walma Ave SE. The $5-per-person breakfast will be served 7-9:30 a.m. and include pancakes, sausage, juice and coffee. It’s free for ages 5 and younger. The NN Mobile Solutions 5K Race & Fun Walk begins at 8:30 a.m. at the Kentwood City Hall parking lot, 4900 Breton Ave. SE. The parade is at 9:30 a.m. A carnival is planned from 10:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. behind City Hall, which is also the site for the 4th of July celebration from 4-10 p.m. with community booths, a beer tent, food trucks and a fireworks show. Gun Lake: Fireworks are scheduled for July 2 with a rain date of July 3. Fireworks began at dark.

LMCU Ballpark: The West Michigan Whitecaps will have fireworks for both games against the Fort Wayne Tin Caps. Game times are 6:35 p.m July 2 and 6 p.m. July 3. More details at  whitecapsbaseball.com.

Caledonia: The Caledonia Independence Day Celebration will include a parade at 11 a.m. Fireworks will be at dusk and can be seen from Duncan Lake Middle School, CalPlex, or Holy Family Catholic Church.

July 4

Grandville: The Grandville July 4 Celebration will include a pancake breakfast, parade with flyover, life music and fireworks at dusk.

Dorr: As usual, the Dorr July 4th Celebration will be the entire weekend, July 2-4 with the parade and fireworks on July 4.

I love being in downtown Grand Rapids on a Tuesday night when it feels like the weekend.

That’s what happened for the opening of Broadway GR’s “Mean Girls.” The city was buzzing with activity with people out and about for a variety of events, including a very funny show. More on that in a moment.

The truth is, as we get closer to the Fourth of July, summer is supposed to be fun, any day of the week.

If you’ve been reading my Top 5, which you can find exclusively on WKTV Journal, I often talk about events Friday, Saturday and Sunday. But throughout the summer I’ll add other weekday events, too.

Here we go!

5. Deos Ballet, Wholred at The Stray Cafe

Check out this cool collaboration event at 7 p.m. Friday (June 24) when Deos Contemporary Ballet performs featuring live music from award-winning band Whorled! Deos works to uplift artists through a culture focused on diversity, wellness and empathy by partnering with community-based organizations. And Whorled! – a recent winner of a Battle of the Bands competition at The Stray – offers a unique World Fusion sound with a blend of Celtic, bluegrass, French Café and jazz influences. 4. Ballpark Series: The Soul Syndicate, Shimmie Pearl

You will love this old, historic ballpark that dates back to 1937, and located on the West Side of Grand Rapids. The Ballpark Series at Sullivan (formerly Valley) Field is one of many events spearheaded by a group called Fans of Valley Field. On Friday (June 24) you can check out two great acts, The Soul Syndicate and Shimmie Pearl. In fact, we interviewed “classic soul, R&B and funk” band The Soul Syndicate earlier this month about shows in Wyoming and Kentwood. Founder and guitarist Mike Coon said their music is meant to keep your toes tapping and the young at heart dancing. “It’s a party!,” said Coon, who leads the 10-piece band through a long list of songs everyone knows and loves. “It’s a fun band. You don’t sit in chairs and watch us.” The show begins at 6 p.m. Tickets start at $15. Learn more on the Fans of Valley Field Facebook page.

3. Last Sundays Outdoor Market, Grand Rapids

Doing something on Sundays makes the weekend last so much longer! That’s why I love the concept of “Last Sundays,” which is a monthly outdoor market at Bridge Street Market in Grand Rapids. It features a variety of local makers, vendors, farmers, food carts, samplings and more. It takes place from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Sunday (June 26) on the corner of Bridge Street and Seward Avenue. 2. Van Andel Arena

As I said earlier, the weekends are busy in downtown GR, especially when the Van Andel Arena is hosting big events.

  • On Saturday (June 25): It’s the Outlaw Music Festival with Willie Nelson and Family, Nathaniel Rateliff & the Night Sweats, Jason Isbell, Charley Crockett, Brittney Spencer and more. Doors open at 3 p.m. Particle Kid kicks it off at 3:50 p.m., followed by Brittney Spencer at 4:30 p.m.
  • On Sunday (June 26): The first-year Cheer Live 2022 stops in for a truly, one-of-a-kind live show from Emmy Award-winning Netflix docuseries “Cheer.” The live performance features 14-time National Champion coach and best-selling author, Monica Aldama alongside cheer stars such as Gabi Butler and Morgan Simianer. The show brings together fan favorites from the two most successful rival cheer programs in the country, Navarro College and Trinity Valley Community College.

1.”Mean Girls,” DeVos Performance Hall

Yes, I lived under a rock in the early 2000s. How else do you explain the fact that I never saw the popular 2004 film “Mean Girls”? Well, now I know what I missed: A truly hilarious, comedic and sometimes too-close-to-reality depiction of life in high school. Now an award-winning Broadway musical, “Mean Girls” opened Tuesday at DeVos Performance Hall as part of a national tour with performances through Sunday (June 26). Most schools are out for the summer, which means families are looking for things to do with the kids. Maybe even things to do with dad, since it’s also Father’s Day on Sunday.

Well, you’re in luck! I have a few ideas – some for kids, some for adults – in my Top 5, which you can find exclusively on WKTV Journal.

5. Beer & Brat Street Festival, Sparta

If you’re up for a little road trip to Sparta, this first-year event looks like a lot of fun. Presented by the Sparta Chamber, the Beer and Brat Street Festival is a two-day street party with games, live music, shopping and – you guessed it, beer and brats! Hours are 4-11 p.m. Friday and 11 a.m.-11 p.m. Saturday. Learn more on the Sparta Chamber Facebook event page.

4. Heritage Hill Garden Tour, Grand Rapids

Take a pleasant walk along streets of Heritage Hill where 12 historic homes will open their gardens from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday (June 18).  “From showy displays in front gardens bursting with color to hidden gems waiting behind a home to warmly welcome guests, the possibilities of what a garden can be will inspire you,” according to press material.

On this self-guided tour, some of the gardens you will find include:

  1. President Gerald Ford’s boyhood back yard now filled with statuary and rare plantings.
  2. Wonderland over 40 years in the making that surrounds an enchanting home. 
  3. A serene and elegant backyard setting that includes a complete outdoor kitchen.
  4. A stately brick home perfectly surrounded by beautiful plantings.  
  5. A small but artfully designed garden that makes wise use of every space.
  6. A front yard garden that catches the eye of everyone who passes by.
  7. Free-flowing flower garden on Prospect Avenue that wears new colors for every season.
  8. Formal fountains galore surrounding a home on College Avenue.
  9. Peaceful natural water feature that accents a shade garden. 
  10. A sweet little garden on Paris Avenue.
  11.  Vibrant annuals and perennials at the Voigt House tended by volunteers.
  12.  Formal gardens at the Meyer May House that are reminiscent of Frank Lloyd Wright’s organic architecture.

Tickets are $12 in advance, $15 on the day of the tour. Tickets are available for presale through midnight on June 17 at heritagehillweb.org.

3. Division Ave Arts & Culture Festival

Speaking of things to do with the family, this is perfect! According to WKTV contributing writer D.A. Reed, the Division Ave. Art & Culture Festival features “food and craft vendors, live music, Pacific Island dancers, interactive art, a colorful dragon parade, fun prize giveaways, and more.” She adds that several local Division Avenue businesses will be participating in the festival, including The Stray, Café Boba, Quest Fitness, and Natural Maya. A portion of 43rd Street will be closed down to accommodate the Festival. It is presented by the Division Avenue Business Association (DABA) and takes place from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday (June 18). 2. Meijer LPGA Classic

The LPGA Tour is back in Belmont for the eighth playing of the Meijer LPGA Classic for Simply Give. All seven previous winners are in the field at Blythefield Country Club, including defending champion Nelly Korda, two-time winner Brooke Henderson and former world No. 1 So Yeon Ryu. In addition, foodies will delight in the new premium hospitality experience offered by J Brewers, is named in honor of the financier who purchased the land where Blythefield now stands. Located on the fourth fairway , J. Brewers will feature more than a 20,000-square-foot pavilion with elevated food and beverage pairings curated and prepared by local and minority-owned restaurants. Daily tickets for access to the J Brewers pavilion cost $75, but gives you front-row views of the on-course action, television viewing areas, great seats and all-you-can-eat access to food and beverage items, featuring local vendors and premium cocktails. General admission tickets are $10 Thursday through Sunday. Kids, ages 17 and under, will receive free admission with a ticketed adult. General admission tickets include general grounds access to the tournament, public viewing area and various Grand Taste viewing and concessions areas located throughout the course. 1.Juneteenth Celebration

On June 19 we celebrate Juneteenth, which commemorates the ending of slavery in the United States. But this weekend we celebrate and pay homage to African American freedom with celebrations throughout the area. Experience Grand Rapids has an extensive list, and our friends at WZZM also have a list that includes Muskegon Heights, Holland and virtual events.

A few of note locally:

John Ball Zoo is hosting Juneteenth Fest, which is a community BBQ with live music, food grilling, people dancing, kids playing, people shopping and hanging out. It takes place 2-7 p.m. Saturday (June 18). Admission is free.

Support local Black creatives and vendors at the Baxter Juneteenth Celebration  held June 18 in Joe Taylor Park . It’s all about family, food, fun, education, empowerment and entertainment.

The 2nd annual Justice 4 All Juneteenth Jam is Sunday at Rosa Parks Circle and includes live music, Black-owned food and business vendors, a graffiti art showcase and more. It is sponsored by the city and local African American apparel company Justice 4 All.

The 5th annual Grand Rapids Juneteenth Dundunba  at Dickinson Buffer Park begins with a parade and segues into an afternoon of live entertainment, raffle giveaways and more. June 19.

Enjoy food, fun and entertainment at two Juneteenth “pop-up” events: June 18 at Rosa Parks Circle and June 19  at Martin Luther King Park.

Back is the Asian-Pacific Festival at Calder Plaza, which offers great food, entertainment and even educational workshops.

Obviously it will be in my Top 5, which you can find exclusively on WKTV Journal.

5. “Frozen Jr.,” Byron Center

Based on the 2018 Broadway musical, “Frozen Jr.” brings Elsa, Anna, and the magical land of Arendelle to life this weekend at the Van Singel Fine Arts Center in Byron Center. The show features all of the classic and memorable songs from the animated film, with music and lyrics by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, plus five new songs written for the Broadway production. Performances are at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday (June 10-11), with a special 2 p.m. matinee on Saturday. More information at www.vsfac.com.

Fulton Street Artisans Market returns on Sunday and runs through September.

4. Fulton Street Artisans Market

For nearly two decades, the Fulton Street Artisans Market has been a great place for Michigan makers and artists to sell their goods and share their passions with the local community. Not only do you get an opportunity to buy handmade goods and artwork, but you also get to interact and learn about the creative processes. It kicks off this weekend, and continues Sundays through September at the Fulton Street Market in Grand Rapids. Hours are 11 a.m.-3 p.m. More information on the Facebook Event page.

3. Grand Rapids Irish Traditional Session at The Stray

One of our favorite local hangouts, The Stray, is having an Irish Traditional Session at 7 p.m. Saturday where you can enjoy a pint while listening to a collective of local musicians play traditional Irish folk music. All ages are welcomed. Admission is free. Tips are ALWAYS encouraged. More information is available at https://www.thestraycafe.com/ or on the Facebook Event page. Other acts this weekend: Chris Bursley, Jordan Hamilton and Normal Mode (7:30 p.m. Friday); and Big Band Nouveau (5 p.m. Sunday). The Stray is located at 4253 Division Ave S, Grand Rapids.

2. Bridge Blast 2022

If you’re headed downtown for this weekend’s Asian-Pacific Festival, you might want to stop by City Built Brewing Co. for an outdoor festival with live music, food and great beer. Bridge Blast celebrates the five-year anniversary of one of the best breweries in West Michigan. Along with several City Built beers, the festival features 12 Michigan breweries right on the Sixth Street Bridge. Admission is free to the general public. 1. Grand Rapids Asian-Pacific Festival 2022

I remember the very first Asian-Pacfic Festival in Grand Rapids, and thought: “This is so needed in our West Michigan community.” Now, six years later, it’s even more important than ever that we support each other as we learn about ALL the cultures that make us a special place to live, work and play. This weekend you can experience 40-plus diverse food and merchandise vendors, as well as entertainment and workshops. All are dedicated to immersive experiences to learn about the Pacific Island, South Asian and Hmong communities. Organizers said: “Start the day with morning yoga. Ice cream launched for National Ice Tea Day

To celebrate National Iced Tea Day, which is Friday, June 10, McAlister’s Deli has teamed up with Creamalicious to offer the deli’s famous sweet tea as an ice cream.

The limited edition pint transforms the beverage into a rich, velvety ice cream featuring notes of sugar cookie and lemon swirls. 

“We are thrilled to put such a fun twist on our most iconic menu item and allow fans the opportunity to experience their favorite Sweet Tea in a new way,” said MacAlister’s Deli Executive Chef Courtney Bufford. “With Creamalicious being known for transforming blissful Southern recipes into ice cream, we knew they were the perfect partner to collaborate on a unique confection out of our Famous Sweet Tea.”

Staring June 10, consumers can purchase a pint for $7.99 at participating McAlister’s Deli’s. The Wyoming McAlister’s Deli, located at  a 2380 Health Dr. SW, which is near the University of Michigan Health – West hospital, has indicated it plans to be offering the sweet treat.

Wyoming Concerts in the Park returns June 7

The Wyoming Concerts in the Park kicks off with Soul Syndicate, which is one of the most recognizable bands in the area known for its horn section that cranks out classic soul, R&B and funk tunes meant to keep those toes tapping and the young at heart dancing.

“It’s a party!,” said founder and guitarist Mike Coon, who leads a 10-piece band through a long list of songs everyone knows and loves. “It’s a fun band. You don’t sit in chairs and watch us.”

Soul Syndicate opens the Wyoming weekly concert series at 7 p.m. June 7 at Lamar Park. Admission is free.

The Tuesday night series continues through Aug. 2. See the list of shows below. All will be recorded and aired on WKTV.

Coon said performing in front of fans at outdoor concerts like Wyoming, Meijer Gardens (June 28) and Kentwood (June 30) really brings out a wide range of ages. That’s the great thing about these classic songs by Aretha Franklin, Sam and Dave, KC and Sunshine Band and Chicago, he said, everyone knows them.

“These songs seem to transcend over a lot of ages, particularly in the outdoor shows like Kentwood and Wyoming where you got, literally, all ages,” Coon said.

Younger people know these songs from parents and grandparents or they’ve heard them in advertisements.

“The younger people are like ‘Yeah, I know that song,” he said. “And the older people remember it when it was on the charts.”

“These songs just sort of resonate…. Nobody is hearing that old classic rock song that’s been in their head for 30 years. (Our show) is different. It’s refreshing.”

That was the goal when the band started in 2013. Even though the beginnings of the band had started, it was the urging of friend Juliet Dragos of WZZM-TV (Channel 13) who reached out to Coon, asking if he could put a group together for a Special Olympics event.

From there they started doing special events, corporate shows, outdoor festivals and casinos.

The premise has always been the same: To entertain crowds with music they know and love and keep them dancing and clapping along.

Their popularity took off because not a lot of bands had horn sections playing these classic songs, he said.

“I couldn’t think of anybody that really did that,” Coon said. “A lot of other bands had one Stevie Wonder song in their set. We had four of them. It set us apart, and the horns made it snap.”

The group consists of: Mike Coon, guitar; Tom Taylor, drums; Katie Sarb, vocals and backup; Matt Fouts, bass; John Neil, keyboards; Tim DenBesten, trumpet (horn leader); Nate Hansen, sax; Jeff Carroll, trombone; and Colin Tobin, lead vocalist.

They also have a couple other musicians who play sax and rotate through the band, Coon said.

They perform about 50 shows a year, which might not seem like a lot, but Coon emphasized that they’re not a “tavern band.”

“We’re all pros.” he said. “No matter the venue we’re given we seem to be able to adapt quickly and make it work.”

But it’s the horn section that really distinguishes the band from others.

“When they’re all in sync it adds that energy to the show, and the audience really responds to them,” Coon said.

“Everybody in the band is an accomplished soloist. Anybody, whether keyboards, bass, drums, anybody in the section can step up and rip your head off on a solo….When the horns  are on and in sync, it just blows your hair back. It’s cool.”

It’s Festival weekend!

And I’m so excited for the return of Festival of the Arts in downtown Grand Rapids. It’s one of the first major events I experienced when I moved to the area more than 30 years ago, and it showed me that West Michigan cares about the arts, and its children.

Plus, the food is great!

Obviously Festival will make it into my Top 5, which you can find exclusively on WKTV Journal.

5. Sunday Night Funnies – Spectrum Entertainment Complex

The return of the “Kingpin of Comedy” stand-up comedy competition begins Sunday, June 5, at the Spectrum Entertainment Complex. It will continue all summer (and fall), with the finals on Oct. 9. The winner of the competition will win $500 in cash, a Kingpin bowling pin trophy, a customized bowling shirt, and the opportunity to close at the Sunday Night Funnies LaughFest show in 2023. A presentation is planned with the mayor of Wyoming declaring the winner as “the funniest person in town.” Additional prizes also will be awarded from the Spectrum Entertainment Complex, Craig’s Cruisers, the Listening Room and Gilda’s Club’s LaughFest. At this weekend’s show, doors open at 7:30 p.m., followed by the show at 8:30 p.m.  Admission is free. The Spectrum Entertainment Complex is located at 5656 Clyde Park Ave. SW, in Wyoming. 4. Kick-Off to Summer Food Truck Festival

It’s a beautiful weekend to experience 30 food trucks, live music, a beer tent and more at this year’s Food Truck Festival in Kentwood. Hours are 11 a.m.-8 p.m. Saturday (June 4)  at Kentwood City Hall and the Kent District Library – Richard L. Root/Kentwood Branch at 4950 Breton Rd. SE.

3. Concerts

Festival of the Arts is not the only thing going on this weekend in downtown Grand Rapids. Rock band Modest Mouse (“Float On”) performs at 7 p.m. Friday (June 3) at GLC Live at 20 Monroe. A few tickets remain starting at $50 general admission. More details at concerts.livenation.com. Also, American country a cappella group Home Free performs at 8 p.m. Sunday (June 5) at DeVos Performance Hall. The group competed in and won the fourth season of “The Sing-Off” on NBC-TV in 2013. 2. Camp Greensky Music Festival 

It’s back! America’s favorite Bluegrass music festival led by Michigan’s own Greensky Bluegrass returns with a great lineup. Performances continue today and Saturday (June 3-4) at Shagbark Farm in Caledonia. The schedule includes:

1.Festival of the Arts

It’s known as one of the largest all-volunteer festivals in the country. And it’s a huge part of West Michigan culture. If you’re new to the area, this is the place to be for local acts such as youth ballet and rock bands to local charities raising money through ethnic food booths. It takes up several stages and food booths spread out on downtown streets to make it happen. Festival of the Arts has been known to bring in as many as 300,000 people over the course of three days (June 3-5). This year should be a return to those big crowds. Enjoy. Variety. Aromas. Excitement.

Food trucks and festivals make the perfect match, just like mustard on a hot dog. (Let’s not talk about ketchup.)

Food truck owners in 2022 are more than county fair concessionaires, offering fries, hot dogs and cotton candy. Today foodies will find gourmet pretzels, mouthwatering BBQ, burritos, pizza, and on and on.

What’s not to love?

“People like variety. People love to meet and greet and grab a bite to eat,” said Steven McGhee of the Kool Breze food truck with a menu of slushies, soft serve ice cream and a variety of decadent desserts.

On Sunday, the Grand Rapids Food Truck Association (GRFTA) partnered with Downtown Grand Rapids, GR8 Food Trucks and others to put together Roll’N Out Food Truck Festival, a fourth-year event making its debut at Calder Plaza. It runs from 11 a.m.-8 p.m. Sunday, May 22.

It will be a grand celebration, said organizers, because food trucks are so much fun.

“ Food trucks are a culture,” said Rock Dandeneau, owner of Pressed In Time Food Truck and president of GRFTA.

“Many large cities have grown the street food scene into a start or incubator for brick and mortar. It is a way to test out foods and concepts. It also is a great way to start a small business and understand the logistics of running a business.”

Overall, he said “food trucks are artistic in nature from its concept, menu offerings and even art designs on the trucks.”

GRFTA, which formed in 2016, is a great resource for those who want to get into the business or just find out where to find food trucks all over the area.

“(We) formed to improve business conditions for food trucks, promote the economic contributions of  the food truck industry to the region,” said Lauren D’Angelo, Vice President, GRFTA.

“We also try to provide educational resources to food trucks and we provide a mechanism of education and exchange information between food truck owners.”

In fact, they have worked with MSU extension to put together a food truck startup course, which is now available online.

Each Food Truck has a story, too.

In order to spend more time with their two boys (Joey and Anthony) during those busy school years, they started cooking for their teammates and families before games and matches.

“One thing led to another and we ended up running the high school concession stands for a number of years,” they said.

It became a full time job for the family.

“We both lost our jobs during the pandemic and thankfully our food truck business saved us,” Katie said.

They BBQ the “old school way” – low and slow with traditional wood fired pits and grills, using oak, cherry, apple and mesquite woods.

”We are family driven and committed to delivering the best quality, fun filled event for you,” they said.

It’s the 6th season of Food Truck Fridays at Riverside Park, north of downtown Grand Rapids. You can see the event from the road. It is located by the Guild St. entrance. This grassroots event has continued to thrive year after year. It offers a great blend of fan favorites as well as plenty of new food trucks for everyone to try. Organizers also have increased the amount of offerings to help with lines and will have a larger footprint to provide more social distancing.

New features include a Frequent Fridays Card that will offer you the chance to win prizes based on how many FTF you frequent.

The Grand Rapids Food Truck Association (GRFTA), will host the 4th annual Roll’N Out Food Truck Fest on Sunday, May 22nd on Ottawa Avenue and Calder Plaza. Up to 38 food trucks and trailers will participate, making the event one of Grand Rapids’ largest food truck rallys.

In addition to the food trucks lining both sides of Ottawa Avenue , the 4th annual Roll’N Out Food Truck Fest will feature:

• Picnic space in Calder Plaza (bring a blanket to enjoy food truck fare and music!)

• Food Truck Certificate Giveaways leading up to the event.

• Entertainment from the Calder Plaza stage.

Kentwood’s Food Truck Festival is one of West Michigan’s largest food truck events. It features 20-30 different food trucks and live music all day, as well as a beer tent featuring many local favorites.

Food Truck Frenzy!  June 9, July 14, Aug. 11, Sept. 8, Sparta’s Town Square in Sparta;

Thursdays on the Square is hosting Food Truck Frenzy. The Facebook page plans to update the food trucks coming, their menus and other details like live bands and more.

Bridge Street Market; Fridays, June 10-Sept. 2, 11 a.m.- 2 p.m.

Food trucks take over the West Side with the help of Stockbridge Business Association and the Bridge St. Market. The corner lot of Bridge St and Stocking/Lexington Ave will play host to four food trucks every Friday beginning June 10.

Happy Food Truck weekend!

Two major events are planning for local foodies who love a good food truck.

Today begins Food Truck Friday at Riverside Park, and then Sunday is the first time Calder Plaza in downtown Grand Rapids will host Roll’N Out Food Truck Festival.

As I mentioned, it’s a busy weekend for food truck lovers as two major events take place.

Food Truck Fridays, 5-9 p.m. this summer beginning May 20 through Sept. 2 at Riverside Park in Grand Rapids features anywhere from 12-17 trucks each week. In its 6th season on the north side of Grand Rapids you can expect some of the area’s best-loved food trucks, as well as new ones, too. WWE Smackdown is at 7:45 p.m. Friday (May 20). Raw Tag Team Champions RK Bro take on Smackdown Tag Team Champions The Usos, in a Tag Team Title Unification Match. Of course, that’s just the highlight. It’s always a full card of entertainment.

All Star Legends of Hip Hop, with Juvenile, Scarface, Trina, MJG, Eightball, Trick Daddy, and DJ Quik, perform at 8 p.m. Saturday (May 21). It’s time to go Old School!

2. ALEgan Beer BBQ and Blues Fest

Looking for a beer and blues festival this weekend? The ALEgan Beer and Blues Fest features five BBQ vendors and live blues music from 2-7 p.m. Saturday (May 21) at the Allegan County Fairgrounds. Summer festivals predicted to be in full swing this season

LANSING — Sunny skies, concerts, food and fun will be happening in Traverse City, Grand Rapids and other Michigan communities as festivals return this year after cancellations and limitations in the previous two years due to COVID-19.

The National Cherry Festival is returning to downtown Traverse City July 2-9 and will mark its 96-year anniversary.

It celebrates cherries in Northern Michigan, which produces 70% of the nation’s cherries, according to executive director Kat Paye.

In 2020, the festival was canceled due to COVID-19, and in 2021 some events were changed, such as having smaller concerts and a drive-through parade, while its usual air show was canceled.

This year, visitors can look forward to the Community Royale Parade and Cherry Royale Parade, eight concerts, two air shows and 150 events.

Paye said the main focus of the festival is always the agriculture of cherries.

“We have a pie-eating contest and you can get cherry pie flurries at our ice cream tent in order to taste the harvest,” Paye said.

Mike Szukhent, the president of Michigan Festivals and Events Association, said festivals and other events ran at a 30% rate in 2021, while this year the association expects close to a 100% rate.

Szukhent said he spoke with Lt. Gov. Garlin Gilchrist, who said there won’t be any restrictions this year so festivals and events can go back to normal scheduling.

 

“We’re looking at 2022 being a major uptick because there aren’t any regulations or restrictions prohibiting festivals,” Szukhent said.

Among them is the Asian-Pacific Festival on June 10-11 and Roll’N Out Food Truck Festival May 22, both in Grand Rapids.

The Asian-Pacific Festival was canceled in 2020 and took place on a restricted basis as a smaller event in 2021.

Festival director Mai Thao said organizers this year are anticipating the biggest turnout ever and people are ready to continue the free celebration in a safe and COVID-friendly environment.

Friday night will be dedicated to Pacific Islander Night and Saturday is Hmong night, according to Thao.

Meanwhile, the Grand Rapids Food Truck Association expects more than 35 participants in its Roll’N Out Food Truck Festival after cancellations in 2020 and 2021, according to Lauren D’Angelo, the association’s vice president.

“We are excited to get all of the food trucks together in Grand Rapids and celebrate the food truck culture and growth,” D’Angelo said.

“We want everyone to come out, try new things and check out all the new food trucks in the area. We hope everyone leaves with a full tummy and great experience,” she said.

It’s been a heck of a week!

We celebrated Star Wars Day and Cinco de Mayo, which were so much fun. And this weekend is the beginning of a beautiful stretch of weather as the forecast calls for 80-degrees next week.

We may as well keep the party going.

Lucky are the hundreds who will be attending this weekend’s sold out Taco & Tequila Festival at LMCU Ballpark. I was just asked to be a judge, so you know I’ll be having a good time.

5. WKTV Voices Storytelling Night at The Stray Café

Do you love stories? Hanging out with friends? Meeting new people? Tonight is the return of the WKTV Voices Storytelling Night at The Stray Café in Grand Rapids. We have several people already signed up to tell their story. In 6 minutes they will share a tidbit about their lives. It could be funny, inspiring or compelling. It’s up to the storyteller. 4. Van Andel Arena Concerts

Two big shows are on tap this weekend:

Brooks & Dunn return tonight (May 6) with a boot, scootin’ boogie good time with opening acts Jon Pardi and Tyler Booth. With 20 No. 1 hits stretching back to 1991, you’ll know all the songs, including “Believe,” “My Maria,” “Boot Scootin’ Boogie,” and many more.

Sting is back for a show on Saturday (May 7) with special guest Joe Sumner. I’m not sure what to say. It’s Sting! That means every song is memorable. According to press material, Sting’s “’My Songs’ concert is an exuberant and dynamic show featuring his most beloved songs written throughout the 17-time Grammy Award winner’s illustrious career, both with The Police and as a solo artist.” That also means classics such as “Fields of Gold,” “Roxanne,” “Every Breath You Take,” “Message In A Bottle” and many more.

3. Star Wars Day at John Ball Zoo

Good news, “Star Wars” Fans. Even if you forgot to wear your favorite shirt on May the 4th (I know two people who did that), you can still celebrate this weekend with a special event on Saturday (May 7) at John Ball Park Zoo in Grand Rapids. Organizers said: “Dress as your favorite character from the Star Wars saga to come learn about the creatures in our galaxy and if you’re lucky, you might just see Luke Skywalker roaming the Zoo.” Hours are 9 a.m.-6 p.m. for Star Wars Day at the Zoo! 2. Tulip Time Festival

It’s time to celebrate Dutch heritage, and tulips, in Holland as Tulip Time returns over eight days with activities in different locations, most within a 4-mile radius of downtown Holland. Tulips can be seen for no charge in public parks and along downtown streets. Overall, more than six million tulips are blooming throughout the city and area attractions. Yes, it’s contemporary, which means references to social media, viral videos, the Internet, chats, etc. But to me, this show is about the basic human nature to be loved, needed and valued as a person. It’s the story about a teenager, Evan Hansen, who doesn’t fit in at school or at home. He struggles mightily. And he gets caught up in a spiral of events that could be his breaking point. In an interview with Meghan Distel of Broadway Grand Rapids, which is presenting the show through Sunday (May 8) at DeVos Performance Hall, she said the musical drama has a “lasting impact” on you. She’s spot on. Even if you can’t attend, find someone who did. Do some research. Stream it on TV. Someone out there needs you. It could be you. Learn more about the show at broadwaygrandrapids.com.

I’m so excited for May, which officially begins on Sunday.

Why?

May flowers, of course, and the return of Tulip Time in Holland (May 7-15). Also, next Friday (May 6) is another WKTV Voices Storytelling Night at The Stray in Grand Rapids. 4. West Michigan Whitecaps

The High A affiliate of the Detroit Tigers is off to a slow start with a record of 7-11 going into tonight’s three-game weekend homestand. But, you know what, it’s always a fun time at LMCU Ballpark! Tonight (April 29) is $1 reserved seats night. On Saturday popcorn is $1. And on Sunday it’s Family Sunday where kids play catch on the field and run the bases after the game. You can’t beat that. We just hope it doesn’t rain. Tonight’s game is at 6:35 p.m. Weekend games are at 2 p.m. More details at www.whitecapsbaseball.com.

3. Thornapple Arts Council Jazz Festival

The 18th Annual TAC Jazz Festival continues today and Saturday in downtown Hastings with free performances by student groups, combos and adult groups all around town. 2. “Kinky Boots” at Grand Rapids Civic Theatre

Based on the 2005 British film “Kinky Boots,” the musical tells the story of Charlie Price, who inherits a shoe factory and forms an unlikely partnership with cabaret performer and drag queen, Lola, to produce a line of high-heeled boots and save the business. In the process, Charlie and Lola discover that they are not so different after all. The show features music and lyrics by Cyndi Lauper and book by Harvey Fierstein. Performances are tonight (April 29) through May 22 at Grand Rapids Civic Theater in Grand Rapids. More details at www.grct.org.

Vintage in the Zoo Market is headed to Grand Rapids for its sixth season with a vintage and handmade marketplace at the Grand Rapids Downtown Market. The event features more than 50 vendors with true vintage clothing, accessories, home goods and furniture from creative artists, designers and makers from all over the region. Grand Rapids rock, blues and rockabilly duo Jesse Ray & The Carolina Catfish, celebrates the release of a new album with a show Saturday at Pyramid Scheme in Grand Rapids. The new, self-titled album “is quite different from other releases as it has more instruments and attitude,” Jesse Ray said in an interview on John Sinkevics’ localspins.com. “Where (2016’s) ‘Angry’ was just angry for the sake of a young man’s anger, the new record is more complicated and emotional with the occasional outburst.” The bill also includes Patty PerShayla & The Mayhaps and The Local Commuters. Van Andel Arena

Downtown Grand Rapids is going to be busy this weekend with a couple big shows at Van Andel Arena. Comedian Katt Williams ( “The House Next Door; Meet the Blacks 2,” “Meet the Blacks”) performs at 8 p.m. Saturday (April 23) and rock band Shinedown performs at 7 p.m. Sunday (April 24). Both KDL Kenwood and Wyoming libraries are hosting book sales this Saturday.

Friends of the Library Used Book Sale

The Kent District Library Kentwood Branch and Wyoming Branch both feature book sales from 9:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday (April 23) where book enthusiasts will find bargains galore. The Hunchback of Notre Dame

Master Arts Theatre in Grand Rapids is presenting “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” with shows April 21-23, April 28-30 and May 5-7. Based on the Victor Hugo novel and songs from the Disney animated feature, The Hunchback of Notre Dame showcases the film’s Academy Award-nominated score, as well as new songs by Menken and Schwartz. According to Master Arts, “Peter Parnell’s new book embraces story theatre and features verbatim passages from Hugo’s gothic novel.” Learn more at www.masterarts.org.

Blandford Nature Center – Earth Day

As part of Earth Day Week, Blandford Nature Center in Grand Rapids is having a Birthday Party for two of its wildlife ambassadors – Archimedes, who is a long-eared owl, and Quillber, a North American Porcupine. In a program from 1-2 p.m. Saturday, you’ll hear their stories and learn about what makes each of them special. Organizers said you can “snap a close-up of silly Archimedes before heading out on the trails to take Quillber for a birthday stroll through the woods.” Admission is free this month to Blandford, but admission to the party is $7 for members, $10 for non-members and free to those ages 2 and younger. Spring Break doesn’t seem like it if you’re stuck in Grand Rapids.

If you’re like me, you’ll make the best of it, despite a few snowflakes.

In my Top 5, which you can find exclusively on WKTV Journal, I include activities for kids, sports fans, craft beer aficionados and theater lovers. Who needs palm trees, the beach and fancy drinks by the pool?

5. Grand Rapids Sports

The Grand Rapids Griffins and the Grand Rapids Gold both have home games this weekend. The hockey team has games Friday and Saturday (April 1-2) at Van Andel Arena. Special activities include Jeff Hoggan jersey retirement, Margaritaville Night, and beach hat giveaway on Saturday. Also, the team has a home game on April 6. More info at vanandelarena.com. Also, pro basketball team the Grand Rapids Gold wraps up its season with games Friday and Saturday (April 1-2) at the DetlaPlex Arena. On Friday, fans get $2 beer, $2 hot dogs and $5 Founders Solid Gold. And it’s Real Superheroes on Saturday. One lucky fan at the game will receive a limited edition superhero jersey and an official Wilson game ball. 4. Grand Armory Tap Takeover at Horrocks

Whether it’s a tap takeover or not, it’s always fun to hang out at Horrocks Farm Market to do some shopping, as well as dine on soup, salad, pizza and other great food. In fact, it’s a great destination any day of the week. If you stop by Friday (April 1), craft beer fans can check out Grand Armory from 4-7 p.m. at Horrocks Market Tavern in Kentwood. Some of the beers on tap include Nerd (New England IPA), Lightly Dusted (Crop Duster Light), Blueberry Watermelon (Fruited Blonde), Grapefruit Grindage (Grapefruit IPA) and their famous Fluffer Nutter (Peanut Butter Marshmallow Stout). 3. Craig’s Cruisers Spring Break Wristbands

It’s back! The popular unlimited action at Craig’s Cruisers is from April 1-10 with morning (11 a.m.-3 p.m.) or afternoon (4-8 p.m.) sessions at Craig’s Cruisers Family Fun Center in Wyoming. The unlimited attractions include: Indoor & Outdoor Go-Karts, Laser Tag, Bumper Cars, Mini-Golf, Bumper Boats, Frog Hopper, Cruiser Coaster and Ninja Course. (Weather permitting on outdoor attractions.) Fans can also experience the Trampoline Park, as well as a pizza buffet. Tickets are $35 per person, plus tax. Waivers are also required. 2. Kids activities at museums and zoo

Several of our local cultural institutions offer great activities for families.

  • Grand Rapids Children’s Museum Spring Break Bonanza includes special performances and presentations, April 1-10. Details at www.grcm.org/events.
  • The Washed Ashore Exhibit opens April 1 at John Ball Zoo in Grand Rapids. The traveling exhibit features 16 large and colorful sculptures throughout the Zoo, all beautifully designed, giant sea life sculptures made entirely of marine debris collected from beaches. More details at jbzoo.org/washedashore.
  • Spring Break at the Public Museum, April 1-10; includes its newest exhibition, Pterosaurs: Flight in the Age of Dinosaurs. These are life-size models, casts of rare fossils while interactives bring these ancient animals to life. Also, relax and recline in the Roger B. Chaffee Planetarium with shows about the incredible forces of our universe. It’s fun for the whole family.   1. Ain’t Too Proud – The Life and Times of the Temptations

I wasn’t too sure what to expect from the national Broadway tour of “Ain’t Too Proud – The Life and Times of the Temptations,” which has performances through Sunday at DeVos Performance Hall. I knew the songs would be great – because who doesn’t love those classic songs like “My Girl,” “I Can’t Next to You,” “Just My Imagination” and “Papa Was A Rollin’ Stone”? But the storyline has to pull it all together, and that’s exactly what it did. In fact, I wouldn’t mind seeing it again. Asked after the show for my review, I said “Ain’t Too Proud” is “a riveting and compelling behind the scenes story about one of music’s most successful acts, told through the classic songs we know and love. It’s a must-show that features stellar voices and those signature dance moves.” I think that says it all.

In my theater podcast “By All Means, Lead the Way,” I interviewed James T. Lane, who plays Paul Williams, one of the original members of the Temptations. The Philadelphia native tells his own story of how he fell in love with dance and the theater. And why he loves this show so much.

You will, too, he added.

“For 2 ½ hours you will be entertained by some of the most extraordinary artists I have ever had the pleasure to work with in all of my 20-plus years of experience,” Lane said in the interview.

“So come, be dazzled, be delighted; feel all of the emotions of the classic 5, and all of the Temptations. Come and see ‘Ain’t too Proud – Life of the Temptations.’ You will not want to miss this.”

5. MEGA 80’S

I’ve been singing the praises of Michigan’s top ‘80s band for more than a decade. The Mega 80’s is the premiere cover band of an era that is most remembered for colorful clothes, synthesizer rock and musc videos. Get dressed up, gather a group of friends and relive some of the biggest songs and videos from the ‘80s on Saturday (March 26) at The Intersection. The Detroit area band always puts on a great show. 4. Grand Rapids Toy Show

Speaking of nostalgia, this weekend you can experience the GR Toy Show from 9 a.m,-3 p.m. Saturday (March 26) at the Home School Building; 5625 Burlingame Ave SW, in Wyoming. You’ll experience more than 200 tables with antique toys, collectibles, pedal cars, dolls, bears, furniture, movie posters and more. Admission is $5 and free for those 10 and under. 3. West Michigan Pet Expo

Where are my pet lovers? Me, I’m warming up to the idea of getting a pet in the near future. This might be a good time for me to check out the West Michigan Pet Expo, a two-day event (March 26-27) with fun activities for animal lovers and families. Along with 50 pet-related vendors, you can enjoy entertainment from The Canine Stars Stunt Dog Show, which was recently featured on America’s Got Talent, as well as a petting zoo, pony rides, a reptile and amphibian exhibit, and more. 2. Monster Jam

One of my favorite memories as a dad is taking the kids to see Monster Jam at Van Andel Arena. It’s a fun, family activity where you get to see these incredible machines race for a championship, do stunts and make jumps. Plus, you have to love names like Grave Digger, El Toro Loco and Monster Mutt! In addition, you’ll be entertained by Freestyle Motocross exhibitions, too. 1. Cottage and Lakefront Living Show

We’re all ready for spring, right? That makes this the perfect weekend to think about summer getaways to a family or friend’s cottage. At the annual Cottage and Lakefront Living Show, those looking to make upgrades or some remodeling can talk to designers, lakefront builders and realtors. Maybe you’re looking for a new dock or boat. 5. Casting Crowns

As part of their “The Healer Tour,” award-winning Contemporary Christian Music act Casting Crowns makes a stop this weekend at Van Andel Arena. The show is at 7 p.m. Saturday (March 19) with special guests We Are Messengers and Jonathan Traylor. Known for multiple hit songs and albums, the group has been a staple on the charts since 2003 when its self-titled album became an instant hit and sold nearly 2 million copies. The band also has been honored with four American Music Awards, a GRAMMY Award for their 2005 album “Lifesong,” and eight additional GRAMMY Award nominations. 4. West Michigan Women’s Expo

The Women’s Expo is a great opportunity to get out of the house with friends and explore a variety of exhibits, seminars and shopping, all tailored to women and their families. Attendees will enjoy interactive activities, pampering, food tastings and even a Great Lakes Writers book and author area. Also, see my friend Jackie Blankenship, who recently was named Mrs. America 2022, as she shares her story about “Confidence and a Belief of Purpose.” She speaks at 1 p.m. Saturday. 3. 38th Annual Spectrum Health Irish Jig

One of the biggest events in the running community is the Spectrum Health Irish Jig, which kicks off the summer season. Even if you have not trained much this winter, you can still get out for an easy run or walk. The race begins at 8:30 a.m. Saturday at East Grand Rapids High School. 2. Fred & Dorothy Fichter Butterflies are Blooming

One of my favorite events in Grand Rapids opened a couple weeks ago – the annual Fred & Dorothy Fichter Butterflies Are Blooming exhibition at Meijer Gardens. It is the largest temporary tropical butterfly exhibition in the nation. The kids will love watching tropical butterflies from around the world fly freely in the balmy Lena Meijer Tropical Conservatory. Throughout the exhibition, guests can experience special educational programming and butterfly-themed activities. It is open through April 30. 1.Laughfest GR

This awesome, six-day community event built on the love of laughter, continues this weekend with a jam-packed lineup throughout venues in Grand Rapids. The annual benefit for Gilda’s House Grand Rapids, the non-profit to support the free cancer and grief emotional health programs founded by Gilda Radner, features some of the top local, regional and national acts. I’ll be at tonight’s sold out trivia show at Golden Age inside Creston Brewery. But tickets remain for Tone Bell, Maria Bamford, improv shows, the All Y’all Comedy Showcase and more. It was just announced that Major League Baseball is officially back, which means Spring training games are right around the corner. Locally we have the Fulton Street Farmers Market this weekend. And St. Patrick’s Day is next week.

It feels more like Spring every day.

I have more signs that warmer days are ahead in my Top 5, exclusively on WKTV Journal.

5. Fulton Street Farmers Market

Are you looking for another sign of Spring? Well, it’s a great time to head out to the popular Fulton Street Farmers Market. With a great assortment of fruits, vegetables, meats, dairy, hand-crafted food items, and unique artisan products year-round. Hours are 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday. The summer season begins May 7 and expands hours and days. The Fulton Street Farmers Market is located at 1145 Fulton St. SE. Learn more at fultonstreetmarket.org. 4. Grand Rapids Ballet Junior Company: Aladdin

This production has been two years in the making after the Grand Rapids Ballet Junior Company had to cancel its planned performances in March 2020 due to the pandemic. The familiar story of “Aladdin ” was choreographed by Grand Rapids Ballet School director and Junior Company artistic director Attila Mosolygo, who said: “It will be an amazing production of dancing and performance,” in a recent interview with D.A. Reed for WKTV. Performances are March 11-13 and 19-20 at the Peter Wege Theatre in Grand Rapids. More info at grballet.com.

3. Grand Rapids St. Patrick’s Day Parade

We all know the big day isn’t until March 17, but you can get a jump start on your St. Paddy’s Day celebrations at 11 a.m. Saturday (March 12) at the annual GR St. Patrick’s Day Parade. The West Catholic High School Marching Band makes an appearance, as well as dignitaries and organizers of the Grand Rapids Irish Committee. The Parade will start at the Grand Rapids Library Foundation on 111 Library St. NE and end on Ottawa Ave. NW. More info at experiencegr.com. Also, immediately after the parade, you can check out the Conklin Céilí Band at Quinn & Tuite’s Irish Pub, 1535 Plainfield Ave NE, for a set.

2. Greta Van Fleet

The Michigan retro rock band that rose from obscurity from the small town of Frankenmuth to international stardom is back on the road on its Dreams in Gold Tour, which includes several Michigan shows. This weekend you can see the guys at 7 p.m. Saturday (March 12) at the DeltaPlex Arena. Opening the show are Rival Sons and The Velveteers. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. General admission tickets are $59.50; reserved grandstand seats are $49.50, $59.50 and $69.50. Learn more at deltaplex.com.

1. Ultimate Sport Show

Who’s ready for Spring. And fishing? This weekend you can experience everything you need to know to have a great season at the Ultimate Sport Show at DeVos Place in downtown Grand Rapids. Discover the latest in outdoor gear, travel information and fishing boats and more, as well as taxidermy, antique lures, fishing simulator and even a trout pond. Overall there are nearly 100 fishing and hunting seminars on five stages, including “Lake Ultimate,” the 110,000 gallon indoor lake. The first 250 people in line on Saturday and Sunday get a pre-rigged K&E Bass Stopper worm. My friend Tony Gates of WLAV will host this annual competition on Lake Ultimate on Saturday from noon-1 p.m. The kid that catches the single biggest fish will win a 1/2 day weekday Charter Fishing Trip for up to 6 people with Captain Lance Valentine. Whether it’s the Home & Garden Show, a new exhibit at the Public Museum or a festival devoted to Bourbon. All of this, and more, are in my Top 5, exclusively on WKTV Journal.

5. Comedy Shows

The local comedy scene is really exploding with local, regional and national acts performing throughout West Michigan. That’s great news as we get closer to Laughfest GR, which is March 16-20, and a great opportunity to see a variety of acts. This weekend check out:

Whitney Cummings – comedian, actor, writer, producer, and director – performs at 7 p.m. Saturday (March 5) at GLC Live at 20 Monroe. She is on her “Touch Me Tour.” Opening is Ricky Velez. Golden Age Comedy – Located in the upper room at Creston Brewery, and presented by Full House Comedy, the venue features Maddy Smith at 7 tonight (March 4) and 7 and 9:30 p.m. Saturday (March 5), and Hal Sparks at 9 tonight (March 4). 4. Grand Rapids Griffins

What? You haven’t been to a Griffins game this season? What are you waiting for? The professional hockey team is in action four times over the next week with games March 4, 5, 9 and 11 at Van Andel Arena in downtown Grand Rapids. You can get $2 beers and $2 hot dogs at select stands on Friday and March 11. And it’s Star Wars Night on Saturday (March 5). 3. 2nd Annual GR Bourbon Fest

Where are my bourbon lovers? Good news, the second annual Grand Rapids Bourbon Fest is back Saturday (March 5) at the Studio D2D Event Center, located at 401 Hall St SW. You will discover 200-plus whiskeys, with the majority of them being bourbon. There will also be a few non-bourbon options such as beer from New Holland Brewing Co. and wine from 45 North Winery. Designated Drivers get complimentary nitro coffee, kombucha and tea from Reputation Beverage Company. In addition to the beverages, attendees can experience food trucks, live music and more. There are two sessions with Session One from 4-7 p.m. and Session Two from 8-11p.m. Proceeds will benefit Friends of The River. More details at the Facebook Event page.

2. Pterosaurs: Flight in the Age of Dinosaurs

Are there any dinosaur lovers in your life? This weekend the Grand Rapids Public Museum opens “Pterosaurs: Flight in the Age of Dinosaurs.” These flying animals ranged from the size of a sparrow to that of a two-seater plane. They are believed to be the first back-boned animals to evolve into powered flight, and the only vertebrates to develop this ability besides birds and bats. The exhibition includes life-size models, videos and interactive exhibits. The exhibit opens Saturday, March 5, with a special members only preview from 9 a.m.-noon.

1. West Michigan Home and Garden Show

The recent warm up makes it feel like spring, and that means it’s a perfect time for the 41st annual West Michigan Home and Garden Show at DeVos Place. You can expect 13 feature gardens, five free seminar stages and more than 350 exhibitors featuring a wide variety of products and services. Let’s go! Hours are noon-9:30 p.m. today (March 4), 10 a.m.-9 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $12 for adults and $4 for children ages 6-14. Have you had a chance to check out Poutine Week on Michigan Street? Several local restaurants and bars are participating, and one will be declared the winner. I’ve only been to Logan’s Alley, but if the others are just as good, don’t miss this opportunity to support local business and enjoy tasty fries covered in gravy, cheese and other proteins. Our friends at the Grand Rapids Asian-Pacific Foundation are raising funds for their summer festival with this weekend’s Noodle Fest competition from noon-5 p.m. Saturday (Feb. 26) at Sixth Street Park. This is part of Downtown GR’s World of Winter. Each bowl is $5 each, and you help decide the winner by voting for the best dish.

The competitors include:

3. Luminary Walk

On this special luminary walk, you can explore Kentwood’s Stanaback Park, which has been transformed into a half-mile pathway lit up with luminaries decorated by community members. This event is free and open to anyone to participate. Dress for cold weather. Hours are 5:30-7:30 p.m. Friday (Feb. 25). Stanaback Park is located at 3717 Whitebud Dr. SE. More info at kentwood.us.

2. Grand Rapids Ballet presents Cinderella

The Grand Rapids Ballet Company kicks off its 50th Anniversary with performances Feb. 25-27 at DeVos Performance Hall. Fans of all ages will recognize the classic fairytale “Cinderella,” which has been choreographed by renowned choreographer Ben Stevenson. The Grand Rapids Symphony performs Sergei Prokofiev’s melodic score, as the audience watches Cinderella’s story unfold. Tickets and showtimes at www.grballet.com.

1.Winter Beer Festival

If you’re a craft beer fan, count your blessings that you live in Beer City USA! With nearly 120 breweries tapping 707 unique beers in 92 styles, this weekend’s Winter Beer Festival – presented by the Michigan’s Brewers Guild – at LMCU Ballpark is the place to be. A few tickets remain. Doors open at 1 p.m. (noon for enthusiasts) on Saturday (Feb. 26) and includes beer samples, fun and good times. Gonzo’s Top 5: Boats, brews, and a polar plunge

The month of February is fading fast.

And the recent warm weather certainly has us thinking about spring and summer. That makes it a perfect time to experience the Grand Rapids Boat Show, which is in this weekend’s Top 5, exclusively on WKTV Journal.

Here we go.

Gonzo’s Top 5

5. KDaLe at Railtown Brewery

If you’re looking for an intense coffee stout, check out Railtown Brewery’s new homebrew collaboration with the  Kent District Library ‘s brewing competition called KDaLe. I stopped by recently to meet up with some friends, and loved the robust and roasty flavors of this coffee beer. Local homebrewer Jason Kniss won with this stout recipe, which was made by the brewers at Railtown. The beer is named after a book called “Repeat” by Neal Pollack. According to reps, “the storyline of the book mimics his experience brewing this stout… It’s smooth and delicious!” As for food, I would recommend any of the mac and cheese dishes, loaded tots and fries, and the Korean Rice Bowl, a Korean-style bibimbap bowl with white rice, shredded carrots, cucumber, pickled onion, kimchi, edamame, and sunny-side up egg.  Along with an extensive luch and dinner menu, the brewery features 20 taps of beer, cider, seltzer and wine. 4. Grand Rapids Polar Plunge

3. World of Winter

The downtown celebration of winter may be a little washed out with the recent rain, but you can still enjoy several weekend activities this weekend. Today (Feb. 18) is the last day to see “Control No Control, an interactive installation at Ah-Nab-Awen Park. This big LED cube reacts to everything that touches it and every movement performed on its surface. Streamlined patterns and generative sound emerge as interaction occurs. Pop-up Entertainers perform from 6-8 p.m. Friday throughout downtown. Also, several local food trucks will be on hand at 555 Monroe Ave. NW (5-8 p.m. Friday, 2-8 p.m. Saturday, and noon-6 p.m. Sunday). Looking for a party? “Modelo Meltdown” is a fundraiser for public art campaigns in 2022. It takes place from noon-5 p.m. Saturday and will have live entertainment, an artist market, games and food & drink to celebrate arts in Grand Rapids. 2. Winter Jam 2022

Presented by NewSong Ministries with Premier Productions, Winter Jam is Christian Music’s biggest multi-artist tour. It stops at 7 p.m. Saturday (Feb. 19) at Van Andel Arena and features Skillet and Tauren Wells, as well as KB, Colton Dixon, I Am They and NewSong. 1. Grand Rapids Boat Show

Summer is right around the corner, and nothing will get you in the mood more than the Grand Rapids Boat Show where you will find power boats, pontoons, fishing boats and other watercraft. The weekend also includes kayak demos, boating safety and Twiggy the Waterskiing Squirrel more. Hours are noon a.m.-9 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m.-9 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday at DeVos Place, 303 Monroe Ave NW. Tickets are $12 for adults, $5 for children ages 6-14 and free to ages younger than 5. It’s Super Bowl weekend, and the entire state of Michigan is rooting for the LA Rams and Matthew Stafford. Are there any Bengals fans out there?

Well, the big game is not until 6:30 p.m. Sunday, which means you have plenty of time to get out of the house and enjoy the snow. We have a few ideas in this weekend’s Gonzo’s Top 5, exclusively on WKTV Journal.

5. Scotty McCreery at The Intersection

I can’t believe it’s been more than 10 years since teen star Scotty McCreery won Season 10 of “American Idol.” It’s been watching him grow as an artist, and as a person. He’s released several hits, got married and even endured loss. Through it all we have we’ve stayed in touch. In fact, I got to spend some time on his tour bus last summer when he performed at an outdoor concert in Grand Rapids. Over the years he has carved out a solid career after his meteoric rise to fame, topping the country charts with hits such as “This is It,” “Five More Minutes,” “You Time” and his most recent video, “Damn Strait.” It’s a classic country song that pays homage to the legendary George Strait. If you’re a fan, you already know he’s in town tonight (Feb. 11) at The Intersection in Grand Rapids as part of his “Same Truck Tour.” Tickets are $39.50 at the door. 4. Disney On Ice presents Mickey and Friends

Why not celebrate the Disney character we know and love by taking the kids to see “Mickey and Friends” at Van Andel Arena? You’ll spend time with Moana and Maui, Woody and the whole “Toy Story” gang, Anna and Elsa of “Frozen” and so much more! 3. World of Winter in Grand Rapids

It’s a busy weekend in downtown Grand Rapids as World of Winter has several events, including:

  • ICE-Breaker from noon-5 p.m. Saturday (Feb. 12) at Rosa Parks Circle to witness the live carving of the publicly voted 5,000-pound ice sculpture by the Ice Brigade‘s Randy Finch. Also, check out a gallery of ice sculptures all throughout Downtown Grand Rapids. You can also join one of the several guided ice sculpture walking tours led by Grand Rapids Running Tours. 
  • Movies on the Piazza: The Princess Bride, 1-3 p.m. Sunday at Studio Park. It’s a free showing, but ring your own chair and warm up by the fire pits.

2. Winter Family Day at Meijer Gardens

If you can’t make it downtown, Meijer Gardens is offering several activities as part of a Winter Family Day from 1-4 p.m. Saturday (Feb. 12). The kids can watch a sculptor transform a block of ice into a piece of ice art; create a winter-inspired craft; and discover how birds play and eat. 1.Hamilton at DeVos Performance Hall

What is there to say? I think everyone knows that “Hamilton,” created by Lin-Manuel Miranda about American Founding Father Alexander Hamilton, is a groundbreaking Broadway show. It has been selling out since it first debuted in 2015, and tickets for the touring shows remain in high demand. A few tickets still remain for performances through Feb. 20 at DeVos Performance Hall in Grand Rapids. Check the latest ticket availability at https://broadwaygrandrapids.com/.

Also, listen to an interview with new Broadway Grand Rapids President and CEO Meghan Distel, who was a guest on my inaugural “Then By All Means, Lead the Way” theatre podcast. In the interview she said the show is “emotional,” “inspiring” and “the lyrics are so brilliant.” “I sobbed the first time I saw it,” Distel said in the podcast. “I was so moved. I love February. It’s Black History Month. The Chinese New Year begins. And the Olympics are back.

All are in this weekend’s Gonzo’s Top 5, exclusively on WKTV Journal.

5. Forest Hills Eastern presents Seussical the Musical

West Michigan is blessed with many great high school theater programs. This weekend you can check one out as “Seussical, The Musical” is being presented at the Forest Hills Fine Arts Center in Grand Rapids. The story takes you on a very familiar journey with The Cat in the Hat, who tells the story of Horton, an elephant who discovers a speck of dust that contains the Whos. Performances are at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 3 p.m. Saturday. Tickets are $12 for adults and $10 for students. More info at fhfac.com.

4. She Runs GR Training Run and Warm Up

Is one of your New Year’s Resolutions is to compete in She Runs Grand Rapids (formally Gazelle Girl)? Even though the race is not until May 1, you can start training now as part of World of Winter in downtown Grand Rapids. A training run is planned Saturday (Feb. 5) with a 30-minute warm-up and distances of 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 miles. Hot chocolate, coffee and water will be available afterward. Meet at 9 a.m. at 555 Monroe. More info on the World of Winter website at worldofwintergr.com/events.

3. Lunar New Year Storytelling

Celebrate the Lunar New Year with the Grand Rapids Asian-Pacific Foundation with a free event featuring outdoor storytelling, storybook reading and dragon/lion dancer performances from. 2-4 p.m. Saturday (Feb. 5) at the Studio Park piazza. Studio Park which is located in downtown Grand Rapids at 123 Ionia Ave. SW. More info at facebook.com/grasianfoundation.

2. Winter Motoring Meet

Looking for a fun outdoor event? The second annual Winter Motoring Meet features more than 400 classic vehicles on Saturday (Feb. 5) at the Gilmore Car Museum in Hickory Corners. The event includes scenic rides in several of the museum’s antique cars and trucks, as well as a special exhibit of vintage snowmobiles, a professional ice carving exhibition and outdoor games. Guests can enjoy an outdoor fire with food and beverages, too. Also, feel free to bring your own snowshoes or cross-country skis for a trek across the 90-acre campus. 1.Michigan International Auto Show

Car lovers, it’s back! The 24th Annual Michigan International Auto Show presented by Gentex takes place this weekend at DeVos Place. The show features 20 manufacturers of trucks, SUVs, crossovers, electrics, hybrids and performance vehicles. Plus, those classic cars in the Million Dollar Motorway of vintage and high-priced cars of the Gilmore Car Museum. Hours are 11 a.m.-9:30 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m.-9:30 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Admission is $12 for adults and $5 for children ages 6-14. Learn more at GRAutoShow.com.

I was shopping at Meijer the other day and said, “Why is all this Valentine’s Day candy out?”

Hello, Gonzo!

Next week is February, and that means Valentine’s Day is right around the corner.

Consider this a heads up for those of you who need a reminder or nudge to come up with a plan. You know your significant other loves it when you plan in advance.

Speaking of planning, if you didn’t get a chance to plan something for this weekend, I’m here with a list of events taking place throughout West Michigan.

5. Huntin’ Time Expo

The largest collection of hunting exhibits in the state, the annual Huntin’ Time Expo, returns this weekend with 350-plus booths featuring a variety of products and services. Along with gear, you can also find a wide range of outfitters from all over the globe and educational seminars. Hours are 1-9 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m-7 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday at the DeltaPlex in Walker. Tickets are $12 for adults, $6 for kids (ages 5-12). Kids admitted free on Sunday. 4. 2022 Kids & Family Expo

Looking for something to do with the kiddos? Indoors? On Saturday (Jan. 29) head over to DeVos Place for a fun-filled family day at the Kids & Family Expo. The goal is to encourage families to play and move with physical activities such as interactive programs, exhibits, and entertainment. They even have a Zip Line that flies through DeVos Place. Tickets are $8 for adults, $4 for children ages 3-15 and free for children ages 2 and under. More info at devosplace.org or kohlerexpo.com/kids-and-family-expo.

3. “Shakespeare in Love”

Based on the Academy Award-winning movie that starred Joseph Fiennes and Gwyneth Paltrow, “Shakespeare in Love” opens this weekend at Grand Rapids Civic Theatre. It opens Friday and continues through Feb. 13. The play reimagines William Shakespeare’s creative process, especially as a young writer who struggled with deadlines and creditors. He finds that love leads the way. Showtimes are 7:30 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday. There is no performance on Feb. 11. Single tickets are $18-$40. 2. Professional Bull Riders

I’m not sure exactly how ranking, scoring or judging works in this sport, but I don’t care. It’s fun to watch, and you know the winners always stay on the bull longer than the others. Sorry if I oversimplified that! According to organizers, “All 40 bull riders will get on one bull each in Rounds 1-2. Following Round 2 Saturday evening, the riders’ individual two-round scores will be totaled with the Top 10 advancing to the championship round for one more out and a chance at the event title. This weekend the Professional Bull Riders Tour stops Friday and Saturday (Jan. 28-29) at Van Andel Arena. More info at vanandelarena.com

1. World of Winter Silent Disco

 

One of the most fun experiences you will ever have is to sing and dance like no one’s watching! That’s the premise of Silent Disco. Put on a set of wireless headphones and enjoy live music from a variety of local DJs. You hear your music and watch others dance to their own beat. Check out Silent Disco at 7 p.m. Saturday (Jan. 29) at World of Winter in downtown Grand Rapids. It is located at 555 Monroe Ave. NW. DJs include: AB & Floppy Drive (7-8 p.m.), Diesel & DJ Sommelier (8-9 p.m.), and Taheo B2B Yeesh & DJ Tony Banks (9-10 p.m.). Food trucks on-site: Patty Matters, Mapocho, Street Chef Shaw and BlueChip. Brrrrr. It’s cold.

Rather than fight it, let’s join it.

This is a perfect time to check out World of Winter in downtown Grand Rapids. Plenty of activities are planned today through March 6.

But, if you want to escape winter, and you’re more focused on summer, it’s also a good weekend to go downtown Grand Rapids for the annual camper and RV show. It’s only a few months away from warmer days.

I also talk a little about basketball and “Star Wars,” two of my favorite passions.

5. Daddy Daughter Dance 


Pre-registration is sold out for this event as kids bring their dads, moms, grandparents or other relatives as their “date” to a Winter Wonderland theme on Saturday (Jan. 22) at Kentwood Library, 4950 Breton SE. Organizers are accepting names over the phone for the waiting list and will notify if there are cancellations. Call 616-656-5270 to be added to the waitlist. 4. Grand Rapids Gold ‘Star Wars’ Night

If you’re a “Star Wars” fan looking for an excuse to see a Grand Rapids Gold basketball game, then head out to “Star Wars” Night on Saturday (Jan. 22) at the DeltaPlex Arena. “Help the Gold channel the force and take down the Fort Wayne Mad Ants,” says the team. The first 500 fans in the door will receive a free lightsaber. And anyone who wears a Star Wars costume or merch gets a free ticket to the game. Doors open at 6 p.m. The game tips off at 7 p.m. Also, the Saturday $44 Four-Pack special is available. Fans get four tickets, four hot dogs and four sodas for $44.. 3. The Harlem Globetrotters

Speaking of basketball, one of my favorite memories as a dad and coach was taking my middle school basketball team to see the iconic Harlem Globetrotters in action. One year we even had a player come to practice to show off their skills. I promise you this is an experience the kids will never forget. The Globetrotters perform at 2 p.m. Sunday (Jan. 23) at Van Andel Arena. More information and ticket information at www.vanandelarena.com.

2. World of Winter Weekend

As part of the World of Winter in downtown Grand Rapids, musical performances and other forms of entertainment will take place throughout downtown from 6-8 p.m. Friday (Jan. 21). You will find these performers throughout the neighborhoods, just in time to grab a drink or a bite at a restaurant or bar. Also this weekend, a pop-up circus performance, curated by GR Circus, takes place from 6-8 p.m. Saturday (Jan. 22) at Ah-Nab-Awen Park near the Gerald R. Ford Museum. You can enjoy live fire performers, hula hoopers, aerial acts, juggling, stilt walking, and more. On Sunday (Jan. 23) enjoy a walking art installation tour.   1. Grand Rapids Camper, Travel & RV Show

When you factor in a dozen West Michigan RV dealers representing more than 100 RV lines combined with 200,000-plus square feet, you get one of the biggest RV Shows in the state. The Grand Rapids Camper, Travel & RV Show also features a great selection of RV accessories, as well as campground and travel destinations. The show is today-Sunday (Jan. 23) at DeVos Place Convention Center in Grand Rapids. Tickets are $12 for adults and $5 for children ages 6-14. A Family Zone area for kids is available Saturday and Sunday. Join us Saturday morning at the show, from 9:30 – 11 a.m., for Also, a pancake breakfast to benefit the Cran-Hill Ranch Summer Camp Scholarship Fund is open from 9:30-11 a.m. Saturday. Welcome to the weekend, my friends.

 

I think we’re all ready for Spring Break or even Mid-Winter Break.

At least we have MLK Day (Monday, Jan. 17), which is a Federal holiday, but more than just a day off.

In honor of Martin Luther King, Jr’.s birthday, and ideals, it is meant to empower individuals, strengthen communities, bridge barriers, create solutions to social problems, and move us closer to Dr. King’s vision of a “Beloved Community.”

We all need that.

 

In the meantime, let’s look at things to do this weekend in my Gonzo’s Top 5, exclusively on WKTV Journal.

5. Pop Up Disc Golf 


It might be 40 degrees. It might be below zero. Who knows this time of year? Well, if you’re a disc golf enthusiast, you don’t care too much. You love being outdoors. That’s why you might want to know about a Pop Up Disc Golf event from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday (Jan. 29) at Covenant Park, 3724 Shaffer Ave. SE, in Kentwood. This is a fun, nine-hole disc golf course. There is no cost to participate, but you must bring your own discs. Restrooms will be available in the clubhouse. This event was supposed to be this weekend, but was changed because of the frigid temperatures. Presented by City of Kentwood Parks and Recreation Department. More info on the Facebook event page.

4. Maple Hill Golf – Huge Golf LIquidation Sale

Speaking of a different kind of golf, the one where I yell “Heads Up” all the time, golf lovers can head out this weekend to the DeltaPlex in Walker for this huge liquidation sale. Presented by Maple Hill Golf, more than $2 million worth of equipment will be for sale. This year’s event marks the 22nd year of the sale, and the first year at the DeltaPlex. Hours are 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Friday, and 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday. Admission is $5. Ages 12 and younger free. More info at www.deltaplex.com.

3. Public Skate at Van Andel Arena

If you have missed free skating at Rosa Parks Circle this winter, it’s back this weekend. No, the construction project is still going on, but thanks to the city’s parks and recreation department, Downtown Grand Rapids, Inc. (DGRI) and Van Andel Arena, free skating is available on Sunday (Jan. 16) at Van Andel Arena. You must reserve a skating time, but walk ups are an option. Each session is 90 minutes and open to 150 skaters. (100 skating spots are reservable, with the remaining 50 available for walk-up skating on a first-come first-served basis.)  Go online to reserve up to six skaters at a time, HERE. Group reservations should only be made with people in the same household as the registrant. Visitors may bring their own skates. Rentals are available. Hockey equipment, such as hockey sticks and pucks, are not allowed on the ice. Hours are 2-3:30 p.m., 4-5:30 p.m., and 6-7:30 p.m.

By the way, the Grand Rapids Griffins are in town Friday and Saturday. Games are at 7 p.m. each night. More info at https://www.vanandelarena.com/events.

2. “Hairspray”

Despite postponing opening night because of COVID concerns among the touring cast, the Broadway production of “Hairspray” opened Wednesday night to great reviews. Fans loved the show, as well as the return of major tours to Grand Rapids. It’s been nearly two years since Broadway Grand Rapids has been able to present a show. “Hairspray” continues through Monday, Jan. 17 at DeVos Performance Hall. (Monday’s show is the rescheduled date for the Jan. 11 postponement.) For ticket information and showtimes, go to devosperformancehall.com.

  1. Unity Walk to Honor MLK

The City of Kentwood was supposed to host a unity walk in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. at 9 a.m. Saturday (Jan. 15), but it has been changed “due to the frigid temperatures forecasted for this weekend, we’ve made the difficult decision to postpone Saturday’s Unity Walk. We will share information about the rescheduled event once details are finalized.”

Organizers had hoped to help Kentwood’s Little Free Pantry with collecting canned goods after the walk. In a Facebook post, they said: “We hope you’ll still help stock Kentwood’s Little Free Pantry, which began in 2017 as an MLK Day community service project. We’re accepting canned goods and other non-perishable items at the Kentwood Activities Center 8:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Monday-Thursday and 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Friday. More information, including a list of suggested donations, is available at kentwood.us/LittleFreePantry.”

Welcome to the weekend, my friends.

What a stretch of weather? How are you doing? It’s like we need another day off just to recover from all of this snow. Thank you to all those who had to work outside to make our lives more safe. We appreciate you.

How were your holidays? It seems like so long ago.

We had a great time with a house full of kids, grandkids, parents and in-laws. We loved every minute of it.

As you prepare for a new year, and resolutions, let’s look at some of the things to do the first full weekend of 2022 in my Gonzo’s Top 5, exclusively on WKTV Journal.

5. La Furia Del Ritmo Original at The Stray

Local act La Furia Del Ritmo Original is performing a show and also debuting a new video, “Besos Marcado,” at 6 p.m. Saturday at The Stray, 4253 S Division Ave., Wyoming. If your goal is to experience local music, especially banda music, here is your chance. The show is free for all ages thanks to Poncho’s Tacos GR. 4. Pop Scholars Improv


Love comedy improv? Pop Scholars Improv is a fast-paced 2-hour show that doesn’t go for the easy laugh. It will impress you with their wit and on-stage chemistry. The show is at 8 p.m. tonight (Jan. 7) at Wealthy Theatre, 1130 Wealthy St. SE, in Grand Rapids. Doors open at 7 p.m. You must be vaccinated and wear a mask to attend. 3. GRPD vs. GRFD Charity Hockey Game

Raise money for a good cause when the Grand Rapids Fire Department takes on the Grand Rapids Police Department in this charity game at 12:30 p.m. Saturday (Jan.8) at Van Andel Arena. The game benefits the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Attendees also get specially-priced tickets to the Grand Rapids Griffins’ game later that night at 7 p.m. Get ticket and more info at griffinshockey.com/grfd-vs-grpd. (The Griffins also play at 7 p.m. Friday.)

2. Dinosaurs in Grand Rapids

The largest and most realistic dinosaur exhibit in North America – “Jurassic Quest” – returns to Grand Rapids this weekend (Jan. 7-9) at DeVos Place. In a recent story on WKTV Journal, we reported that the exhibit is an indoor family education and entertainment show that features more than 100 life-like dinosaurs, dinosaur-themed rides, live dinosaur shows, and interactive science and art activities. There also will be a Triceratots soft play area, bounce houses, and inflatable attractions. Tickets are $22 for adults and children and $19 for seniors. There is also a $36-dollar ticket for kids unlimited rides. Tickets do include a 100 percent guarantee of refund if the show is canceled or postponed for any reason. 5. The Grand Rapids Gold

The season is just getting started for GR’s newest professional franchise, The Grand Rapids Gold basketball team in the NBA G League. 4. Grand Rapids Griffins

We always have our Griffins to usher in a new year. The popular New Year’s Eve game – complete with fireworks – returns on Dec. 31 at Van Andel Arena. 3. Normal Mode at The Listening Room

Ready for live music to make a big comeback in 2022? I know I am. Start the new year with Normal Mode, a Grand Rapids-based trio writing what it calls “lo-fi space travel music.” The group performs at 7:30 p.m. Saturday (Jan. 1) at The Listening Room in Grand Rapids. The band’s press material says: “This group of young, but seasoned musicians offer up floating ethereal soundscapes on top of head bopping grooves; perfect for a relaxing exploration. Dutcher Snedeker (Piano/Keys), Ian Thompson (Upright/Electric Bass), and Nathan Coles (Drums), all have deep roots in the Michigan music scene. Their genre blending style echos hints of Jazz, rock, and funk, while leaving enough room for improvisation.” I couldn’t agree more. It’s fantastic! The show is free. 2. Billy Strings Live

Fans are excited for the return of bluegrass star Billy Strings, a local musician-turned Grammy award winner, who is scheduled to perform Dec. 30-Jan. 1 at GLC Live at 20 Monroe in downtown Grand Rapids. All shows are sold out. If you have tickets, you’re in for a memorable evening. If not, well, maybe next time. And if you’ve never heard of Billy Strings or you want to watch from home, this is a good opportunity to learn more about this emerging national talent who is originally from Ionia. Oh, and if you’re downtown on Thursday (Dec. 30), a pre-show concert is planned with Desmond Jones, a five-piece American rock band from Grand Rapids, at 5 p.m. at The Listening Room. The show is free. Doors open at 4 p.m. The band is known for its “melodic guitar riffs, funky bass lines, groovy drumbeats, and smooth saxophone,” according to press materials. Note: Billy Strings postponed some shows in Nashville earlier this month because of a Covid positive test in his touring band. In a story on liveforlivemusic.com he said: “At this time we have every intention of performing our New Years Eve run in Grand Rapids and can’t wait to see you there. We love you and hope you all stay healthy and safe this holiday season.”

1. Christmas in Grand Rapids

I’ve mentioned a couple local institutions several times over the last few weeks. Don’t forget:

The Christmas Lite Show at LMCU Ballpark remains open from 5:30-9 p.m. daily, and 5:30-10 p.m. Friday and Saturday. It runs through Jan. 1. Cost is $28 per car. More information at christmasliteshow.com.

The University of Michigan Health-West Christmas & Holiday Traditions exhibition at Meijer Gardens runs through Jan. 2. It is open daily, but closed on Jan. 1. More details at meijergardens.org.

Welcome to the weekend, my friends.

What a strange – and blustery – winter weather pattern we’ve been experiencing. I hope everyone has remained safe.

As you already know, we’re only a week away from the Christmas holiday, and I couldn’t be more excited. My kids from North Carolina will be visiting for about 10 days, and I can’t wait to squeeze those grandbabies! Lucky me.

Are you entertaining over the holidays?

Well, as you prepare for your activities, let’s look at some ways to de-stress in this weekend’s Gonzo’s Top 5, exclusively on WKTV Journal.

5. Broad Leaf Brewery & Spirits

My good friend Amy Sherman turned me on to all the cool things they’re doing at Broad Leaf Brewery, the sister brewery of Jason and Kris Spaulding of Brewery Vivant. We’ve been there a few times, and the beer is always tasty, and the environment perfect to entertain the family or guests with all those video games. This weekend stop by for their Holiday Bazaar from 1-5 p.m. Sunday (Dec. 19) to support local artisans – and local beer. More details at https://broadleafbeer.com/event/christmas-bazaar/. Broad Leaf also offers a great food menu, and cocktails. It is located at 2885 Lake Eastbrook Blvd SE in Kentwood.

4. TUBACHRISTMAS Concert

You know the saying: “Nothing says Christmas like a Tuba!” I know, that’s not a saying, but you can enjoy the return of this popular show when local performers take the stage at 3 p.m. Sunday (Dec. 19) at Fountain Street Church, 24 Fountain St. NE. Check out the event’s Facebook page for more info. Oh, and if you’re a tuba player or “a musician with a tuba, baritone, sousaphone, euphonium, or anything else in the tuba family, you’re welcome to join” in, organizers say on the event page.

3. It’s a Wonderful Life

It’s family movie time! Take a short drive to Muskegon and enjoy the beautiful Frauenthal Theatre (built in 1930) for a screening of the classic “It’s a Wonderful Life.” Show time is 3 p.m. Sunday (Dec. 19). 2. Ready for Reindeer!


Despite the recent warm weather, temperatures will dip back into the 30s as we head into Christmas. That’s perfect for Santa’s reindeer. Our friends at the KDL Kentwood Branch say the reindeer are “traveling all the way from the North Pole – via Rooftop Landing Reindeer Farms” for a visit at 10 a.m. Saturday (Dec. 18) at the Richard L. Root Branch Library, 4950 Breton SE, in Kentwood. More details on the library event page.

1. Grand Rapids Griffins

I have not been to a Griffins hockey game the last couple of years, and this might be a perfect escape before the kids come to town. The team has games Saturday (Dec. 18), Sunday (Dec. 19) and Wednesday (Dec. 22) at Van Andel Arena. If you want to bring the little ones, go on Saturday when Santa Claus is coming to town. He’ll be on hand for a special pre-game visit. Game time is 7 p.m. The first 1,000 kids 13 and under get a replica 25th anniversary Griffins jersey. Oh, and if you’re off of work next week (like me!), you might want to experience “Cirque de Noël!,” which returns for performances Dec. 21-22 at DeVos Performance Hall. You’ll see acrobats, aerialists, contortionists, jugglers and strongmen all to the classical and seasonal musical selections by the Grand Rapids Symphony. Welcome to the weekend, my friends.

What do you have planned?

Me? Well, I’m still wrapping my head around the fact Christmas is about two weeks away. Yes, I said TWO  WEEKS! Thankfully I have the lovely Pam, my wife, who handles all the stress of shopping, cooking and wrapping to make it a perfect holiday. But there is just so much going on.

Well, I say don’t forget to take a break to try something new or maybe create new traditions.

Here are a few things to consider in this weekend’s Gonzo’s Top 5, exclusively on WKTV Journal.

5.WWE Supershow Holiday Tour

Are you a fan of Raw or SmackDown? Well, you probably already know your favorite stars will be in Grand Rapids this weekend for a show at 5 p.m. Sunday (Dec. 12). Scheduled to appear: Universal Champion Roman Reigns, WWE Champion Big E, RAW Women’s Champion Charlotte Flair, SmackDown Women’s Champion Becky Lynch, Bianca Belair, Drew McIntyre and many more. 4.Horrocks Holiday Jamboree

Live music. Santra’s reindeer. Hot chocolate. And a mac and cheese bar! Sign me up. The annual Horrocks Holiday Jamboree returns from 4-8 p.m. Friday (Dec. 10) at Horrocks, 4455 Breton Road SE, in Kentwood. There is a winter petting zoo for kids, as well as holiday caroling and a lineup of children’s bands. Kids can also drop off a letter to Santa in the Elf Express Delivery mailbox. 3.The Grand Rapids Ballet Presents The Nutcracker

You know it’s the holidays when the famous “Nutcracker” presented by the Grand Rapids Ballet Company returns. Performances are Dec. 10-12 and Dec. 17-19 at DeVos Performance Hall, 303 Monroe Ave NW. I’m not sure if I need to explain why it’s such a classic meant for every child, at least, once in their lifetime. 2.Wyoming and Kentwood Area Santa Parade

Presented by the Wyoming/Kentwood Area Chamber of Commerce, the Santa Parade is at 10 a.m. Saturday (Dec. 11) and features more than 50 entrants, including five school bands, and — well, you know — Santa. The parade travels on South Division between 34th and Murray Streets. More info at http://southkent.org. If you miss the parade, your friends at WKTV will re-broadcast on cable television at 7 p.m. Saturday and 10:30 p.m. Sunday. WKTV’s coverage of the parade also will be available on-demand later.

1.James Taylor & Jackson Browne at Van Andel Arena

Concerts are back in a big way, and you get two big names in one show when James Taylor and Jackson Browne perform at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Van Andel Arena. Performing with his All-Star Band, James Taylor has been entertaining audiences for more than 40 years. He’s in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame, and he has sold more than 100 million albums. Fans have loved him for years. And Jackson Browne, who is known for big hits such as “The Pretender” and “Running on Empty,” is always a pro. Check on ticket availability and more details at vanandelarena.com.

Welcome to the weekend, my friends.

We have so many things going on locally, as usual. But this weekend I find myself on Mackinac Island for its annual Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony. You can follow my Facebook page for updates. I might even bring back some fudge, if you’re interested.

A little closer to home….. you can check out the Christmas tree lighting party at Boston Square Community Parklet at 4:30 p.m. Saturday (Dec. 4). Eight Boston Square area organizations and businesses are hosting a free, family-friendly event featuring music, food and talent from the neighborhood. The ceremony begins at 6 p.m. at the Boston Square Community Parklet, 1505 Kalamazoo Avenue SE.

In addition, the Christmas in Caledonia Lights Parade and tree lighting ceremony is from 4-7 p.m. Saturday (Dec. 4) in Caledonia and features food, warm fires and festivities. A light parade will start at 6 p.m. with Santa ushering the parade. You can get a photo with him after the parade.

5. West Catholic Christmas Craft Show

I have been writing about local craft shows every week, and this weekend marks the return of the popular West Catholic Christmas Craft Show. It features 200-plus crafters and is from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday (Dec. 4) at the high school, 1801 Bristol Ave NW, Grand Rapids. Now that it’s December, you might want to get serious about your holiday shopping. (I’m telling myself.) You can find more information about the craft show on the event Facebook page. (I recently started working at West Catholic High School on the school’s communications team and I can tell you that everyone is excited to put on a great event, which helps raise funds for school programs.)

4. Wyoming Light Show

If you’re looking for a holiday light show a little closer to home, you can find nine houses synced to music located on Sage River Court SW and Amur Drive SW in Wyoming. Organizers of the Sage River Holiday Light Show encourage you to tune in to your radio at 94.1 FM when you arrive. Find more details on the Facebook page.

3. The Sound of Music

Over a recent family dinner I was talking to my niece, Christina Gonzalez, who said the cast is loving the return of Grand Rapids Civic Theatre’s “The Sound of Music.” She plays the role of Sister Sophia. That reminded me I better get tickets soon. Performances continue through Dec. 19. Shows are usually at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday-Saturday, and at 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. 2. Visit Santa Meijer Gardens

As we have written about in prior weeks, the annual University of Michigan Health-West Christmas & Holiday Traditions exhibition at Meijer Gardens is in full swing as guests experience 46 trees and displays representing countries and cultures from across the globe, as well as 300,000 lights and Garden Railway display. But you can visit Santa, too. He makes an appearance from 5-8 p.m. Dec. 7, 14 and 21 in the Lena Meijer Tropical Conservatory (where it’s always balmy). His reindeer arrive at a different time. They are in the Michigan Farm Garden from 1-4 p.m. on Saturdays: Dec. 4, 11 and 18. Both are free with admission to the Gardens. Get all the details at meijergardens.org.

1.Trans-Siberian Orchestra

Looking for a BIG this weekend? You’ll be wowed by the spectacle of the Trans-Siberian Orchestra, which brings its “Christmas Eve and Other Stories” tour to Van Andel Arena for two shows – 3 and 7:30 p.m. Sunday (Dec. 5). The rock opera features many of TSO’s most beloved numbers, including “Ornament,” “Promises to Keep,” and, the song everyone knows, “Christmas Eve/Sarajevo 12/24.” Ticket information, a video preview of the show and more at vanandelarena.com. 5. Wyoming Wolves Band Craft Show

Help support the band program at Wyoming High School at its annual craft show, which is from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday (Nov. 27).  Many talented crafters and vendors will be on hand to showcase their hard work. Also, the band boosters are planning a bake sale. More information is available on the Wyoming Wolves Bands Craft Show Facebook Page. The school is located at 1350 Prairie Pkwy SW in Wyoming. (Masks are required indoors.)

4. Small Business Saturday

In the Gonzalez household we have really scaled back the last couple of years when it comes to Christmas gifts. We’re lucky. The kids are older now, and we don’t need much. But, we do love to support local businesses. This weekend — in Kentwood, Wyoming and most local communities — small mom and pop shops everywhere are hoping you stop in on Small Business Saturday. Our friends at Sunnyslope Floral will host an indoor mini holiday market with local vendors offering flowers, sweets, cookies, coffee and more. Hours are 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday (Nov. 27) at Sunnyslope, 4800 44th St. SW in Grandville. More info on the event Facebook page. 3. Rockford Brewing Co. 10th Anniversary

I can’t believe Rockford Brewing Co. has been around for 10 years. That’s like 100 in craft beer years. If you’re headed to the Rockford area this weekend, make sure to check out the 10th anniversary Pub Crawl where local restaurants/bars are showing off special RBC collaborations through the weekend. Some of those collaborations are with Mitten Brewery, Cedar Springs, Founders, Trail Point, Third Nature Brewing and more. The participating Rockford locations include Uccello’s Ristorante (Rockford), Grill One Eleven, Marinades, The Corner Bar, Kayla Rae Cellars, and Rockford Brewing Company, of course. 2. Christmas Lite Show

I’m so excited for the return of the annual Christmas Lite Show at LMCU Ballpark in Comstock Park. The popular Grand Rapids event is celebrating 24 years in West Michigan, which means it’s been a part of our family’s tradition since it opened. (We raised our family just down the road so we got to see the lights and the lines every night.) You know the drill: Nearly two miles of Christmas magic with more than a million lights, animated displays, lighted tunnels and more. Tickets are available online or at the ticket window for $28 for most cars. Hours are 5:30-9 p.m. Sunday-Thursday, and 5:30-10 p.m. Friday and Saturday. It runs through Jan. 1. Another West Michigan tradition returns this weekend. It’s the annual University of Michigan Health-West Christmas & Holiday Traditions exhibition at Meijer Gardens, which runs through Jan. 2. You know the drill here, too: More than 300,000 lights, strolling carolers, rooftop reindeer and 46 international trees and displays. But that’s not all. Guests also can enjoy Sounds of the Season, as well as the companion Railway Garden exhibition with miniature buildings handmade from natural materials and model trolleys and trains. Oh, and you know Santa will be making several appearances. In addition to late hours on Tuesdays, Meijer Gardens is open until 9 p.m. on Dec. 20-23 and 27-30. Meijer Gardens is open daily for the holidays, but closed Nov. 25, Dec. 25 and Jan. 1. More details at meijergardens.org.
