Woodland Mall is preparing for the season of giving and joy with activities supporting local organizations, a special visit from Santa and other festive events.

In addition to a number of charitable efforts, the mall is preparing for Santa’s grand arrival with a parade through the mall, a visit from Frozen’s Elsa and Anna, photo opportunities, dance and musical performances by local groups and more.

“Each year, Woodland Mall strives to offer the best holiday shopping experience with a diverse lineup of retailers, great deals and memorable events,” said Lisa Wolstromer, senior marketing director of Woodland Mall. “We take pride in being a hub of holiday cheer with special appearances from Santa, several charitable activities and performances from local artists.

“New this year, Woodland Mall will also host a Giving Machine, a unique giving experience that will help shoppers send donations to global and local charities to help change lives around the world.”

Santa’s Parade – Nov. 16

Santa will make his grand return to Woodland Mall with an indoor parade beginning at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 16. Santa’s procession will begin near the entrance of the food court and end at his holiday home in the Macy’s court. Santa will be guided by the Academy of Dance Arts.

Following the parade, the mall invites children and their loved ones to the Santa Arrival Celebration to take photos with Santa and meet Anna and Elsa from Disney’s Frozen. There also will be balloon twisters, face painting and craft activities to enjoy from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Photos with Santa – Nov. 16-Dec. 24

Santa will take photos with guests and listen to holiday wishes from Nov. 16 through Christmas Eve. Reservations are encouraged, but not required for the photo opportunity. Digital photo packages are available with options to purchase prints and a family portrait.

Beginning Nov. 18, visitors can bring their “fur babies” for a photo with Santa on Mondays through Dec. 16. Family pet members of all kinds are welcome as long as they are kept on a leash, in a crate/carrier or held by the owner at all times. Pet owners must also sign a release prior to visiting Santa.

Black Friday Deals – Nov. 29

Woodland Mall will be closed on Thanksgiving Day to enable retail employees to enjoy the holiday with their loved ones. The mall will reopen at 8 a.m. Friday, Nov. 29 so guests can enjoy an early start to the traditional shopping weekend. Several seasonal stores will offer discounted gift items on Black Friday. Byron Center Choir Performance – Dec. 5

The Byron Center High School Choir will perform a variety of holiday-themed songs to bring joy to those holiday shopping from 11 to 11:30 a.m. in the Von Maur wing.

Salvation Army Red Kettle Drive – Nov. 8-Dec. 24

The iconic red kettles and volunteers will be stationed at the mall’s JCPenney entrance throughout the season. Characters from Star Wars will make special appearances from 1 to 3 p.m. on Dec. 7 and 14. Additionally, there will be Salvation Army band pop-up performances. Donations go toward improving the lives of families in the local community. 

Artists Creating Together Concert – Dec. 9

Artists Creating Together, which empowers individuals with disabilities to learn, grow and celebrate through the arts, will give a musical performance on ukuleles and Tubano drums from 5 to 6:30 p.m. in the Von Maur wing.

Giving Machine – Dec. 12

This holiday season, Woodland Mall also will welcome the arrival of the Giving Machine as another creative way for the community to give back. Starting Dec. 12, this vending machine will allow shoppers to choose and purchase various donation items, including school supplies, household items, meals and clean water to global and local charities. The Giving Machine will be located in the Von Maur wing and remain available until Jan. 4.

There will be Giving Machine performances throughout the holiday season, encouraging individuals to explore the machine and donate using the device. Learn more about the Giving Machine and listen to stories about donation recipients on their website.

Holiday Hours                                                                                                                      

The mall will have extended hours to ensure guests are able to get all their holiday shopping completed. Visit ShopWoodlandMall.com/hours for details. To avoid the crowds, Woodland Mall recommends shopping Monday through Thursday when the traffic is lighter. As a friendly reminder for visitors, please be patient and respectful to employees during the busy shopping season.

On Christmas Eve, Woodland Mall will be open from. 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. The mall will be closed on Christmas Day. The mall is open the day after Christmas from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., on New Year’s Eve 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and New Year’s Day 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Woodland Mall to host Hispanic Heritage Event Saturday, Sept. 28

Woodland Mall will host an event in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month on Saturday, Sept. 28 in partnership with West Michigan’s Spanish-language radio station, La Poderosa.

From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., the celebration will feature a Mexican dance performance, a variety of Hispanic-owned vendors, a coloring station and prizes in the mall’s Von Maur wing. La Poderosa will be programming live from the event, playing today’s Hispanic music hits and doing giveaways. In addition, On the Border Mexican Grill & Cantina will be offering chips and salsa samples.

Hispanic Heritage Month is a celebration of Hispanic and Latinx history, culture and contributions to the United States. It’s celebrated from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15 each year since 1988. 

“We look forward to bringing the community together to celebrate Hispanic and Latinx heritage and culture here in West Michigan,” said Marketing Manager Kennedy Vancalbergh. “This all-ages event will feature traditional dance performances, crafts for children, prizes and delicious food. We are delighted to again partner with La Poderosa to honor Hispanic Heritage Month.”

A special performance by Mexico Mix Ballet Folklórico, a local Ballet Folklórico dance group, will kick off the celebration at 11 a.m. The group consists of 10 adults and 10 children who will perform traditional Mexican dances for the audience.

Other activities include a booth where children can color maracas and a passport bingo game inviting guests to “travel” to all the vendors, matching countries on their bingo card to each booth. Once the bingo sheet is complete, guests will receive a prize and can also enter into a gift card giveaway.

Approximately 20 regional businesses will showcase their goods and services during the fifth annual Black-Owned Business Showcase at Woodland Mall Saturday, Aug. 10.

The annual event will feature booths with Black-owned businesses offering baked goods, health and wellness products, jewelry, apparel and more.

Woodland Mall to host Cinco de Mayo Fiesta Sunday, May 5

Woodland Mall will host its very first Cinco de Mayo Fiesta on Sunday, May 5 to celebrate Mexican heritage and culture.

In partnership with West Michigan’s Spanish radio station, La Poderosa, the celebration will feature live music, a Mexican dance performance and trivia with exclusive prizes at the mall’s outdoor plaza near On the Border Mexican Grill & Cantina. In addition, On the Border’s menu will feature food and beverage specials all day.

Cinco de Mayo is a widely celebrated holiday that memorializes Mexico’s victory over the French during the Battle of Puebla in 1862.

“We are looking forward to bringing the community together to celebrate Mexican heritage and culture at our first-ever Cinco de Mayo Fiesta,” said Marketing Manager Kennedy Vancalbergh. “The event will provide captivating music and dance performances, crafts for children, games and delicious food.”

A special performance by Mexico Mix Ballet Folklorico, a local Ballet Folklorico dance group, begins at 3 p.m. The group consists of 10 adults and 10 children who will perform traditional Mexican dances for the audience. Other activities include a booth where children can color maracas and a selfie-station to capture memorable moments with friends and loved ones, if weather permits.

The first 50 attendees will receive a gift bag filled with a Cinco de Mayo necklace, an assortment of Mexican candy and coupons to a variety of Woodland Mall stores.

Woodland Mall will once again recognize Black History Month by hosting community events in partnership with the City of Kentwood and New Hope Baptist Church on Saturday, Feb. 24.

The day will kick off with the third annual Unity Walk with the City of Kentwood at 11 a.m. Community members are invited to gather at the food court inside Woodland Mall, 3195 28th St. SE, for a walk that will end in front of Von Maur at 11:20 a.m.



A ceremony will immediately follow and feature welcoming remarks from Kentwood Mayor Stephen Kepley, live music from Kevin Brewster, an educational session with George Bayard, director and curator of the Grand Rapids African American Museum & Archives, refreshments and more.

“We’re pleased to once again come together with our partners at Woodland Mall and New Hope Baptist Church to put on a day of programming focused on recognizing Black History Month,” Kepley said. “We welcome community members of all ages to join us for these impactful events.”

Following the Unity Walk, New Hope Baptist Church will present its 10th African American Live Museum. Starting at 1 p.m., community members can see a cast of 35 people ages 8 to 66 put on more than 20 live performances featuring remarkable African American figures throughout history and in current culture from politics, sports, science, arts, entertainment and more. Mary McLeod Bethume, The Temptations and Coach Deon Sanders will be among the legends appearing throughout the mall until 5 p.m.

The Live Museum provides an engaging experience for community members as performers bring their persona to life, adopting mannerisms of the legendary figures they are portraying while sharing facts and stories from their lives. Visitors can watch and listen to the performances to learn about each historic figure.

“Through the African American Live Museum, we share history in an engaging way that allows us to connect with the community and educate them about the historic accomplishments of Black Americans, while also showcasing our talented performers,” Dr. Cathy Large, drama ministry leader of New Hope Baptist Church said. “We’re grateful to Woodland Mall for hosting us for the 10th year.”

Woodland Mall to host Job Fair on Friday, Nov. 3

Woodland Mall will host a job fair on Friday, Nov. 3 featuring more than 25 organizations seeking to fill dozens of positions.

Job seekers will have the opportunity to learn about full-time, part-time and seasonal positions from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Organizations will be set up at hiring tables located throughout the mall.

A variety of retailers, restaurants and other organizations will participate in the event with opportunities for a wide range of roles, from seasonal sales associates to managerial positions.

“We’re delighted to host a hiring event to help our retailers find high-quality candidates to join their teams,” said Kennedy Vancalbergh, Woodland Mall marketing manager. “Here at Woodland Mall, we have a wide variety of careers available for anyone who is interested in retail or may be looking to earn some extra cash around the holidays.”

Spooky season is officially upon us. While seasonal pop-up shops or big-brand party stores may seem like the obvious choice for finding the perfect costume, Woodland Mall has options for Halloween looks that feature pieces you’ll wear again and again. Some ideas include:

An iconic name made an appearance at Woodland Mall during the 28th Street Metro Cruise event Aug. 25-26, 2023.

A legacy that stretches over 100 years, Radio Flyer is one of the most recognized names in the toy industry.

Founded in 1917 by young Italian immigrant Antonio Pasin, Radio Flyer began as a hobby – a coaster wagon that he created and sold to local hardware stores. That first line of wagons sold as fast as he could make them.

Pasin christened the wagon the Liberty Coaster, later renaming his invention Radio Flyer – the Original Little Red Wagon®. The combination of “radio” and “flyer” was born from Pasin’s fascination with airplanes and radios.

Today, Radio Flyer continues to be a Chicago-based, family-owned company committed to creating high-quality products.

“Our mission is to create smiles and warm memories that last a lifetime,” Radio Flyer’s website says.

Metro Cruise is coming to 28th Street Aug. 25 and 26 with old favorites and new features

Buckle up for the 18th annual 28th Street Metro Cruise this weekend!

15,000+ collector/sports/antique cars, two days, 17 hours, five cities, 13 miles, and hundreds of public and private events will descend upon 28th Street and the surrounding areas on Aug. 25 and 26.

An estimated 200,000 people participate in Metro Cruise related events during this annual two day event.

Since its inception in 2005, Metro Cruise has been a consistent celebration of cars, local business, great food, and family and friends while also continuing the car culture known in the Grand Rapids area.

A new era

Previously owned by the Wyoming-Kentwood Chamber of Commerce, Metro Cruise has recently come under new ownership through a privately owned entity.

Despite the change in proprietorship, Wyoming Police Lt. Andrew Koeller said, “The Wyoming Police and the City of Wyoming are providing the same services we have traditionally provided.”

Wyoming Police Department is staffing Metro Cruise with assistance from the Michigan State Police, Kent County Sheriff’s Office, Grandville Police, Walker Police, Kentwood Police, and Wyoming Fire Department.

Eventgoers can expect to see WYPD in marked police vehicles, police motorcycles, on bicycles, and on foot.

“The Wyoming Police Department is committed to providing a safe environment during the event for all to enjoy,” said Koeller.

Take a quick Pit Stop

“We are very excited to announce a feature of Metro Cruise we know you’ll love,” the Metro Cruise website states. “There are now more ways than ever to enjoy your favorite auto event.”

Three Pit Stop sites have been added to Metro Cruise. These sites will be smaller, more specialized, and offer easier access than the Main Event sites at Woodland Mall and Rogers Plaza.

Hosting a minimum of four key features – collector car club(s), food vendor(s), official Metro Cruise merchandise, and an entertainment feature – each Pit Stop site will be open to the public with space for free parking.

The Metro Cruise Dust Off kicks off the event series each year (WKTV)

Official event times are 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 25, and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 26. The Official Cruise time down 28th Street at 4 p.m. on Saturday. However, it is not unusual to see classic cars cruising along 28th Street all weekend long.

The Woodland Mall Main Event location will offer several family-friendly activities such as live music, Car Smash, RC Car building and racing, a climbing wall, a scavenger hunt, and much more.

Also featured at the Woodland Mall will be the annual DreamWheels Red Carpet Classic Car Show on Saturday from 8 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. This premiere event allows audience members to gather along a 135 foot red carpet as beautiful classic cars are revealed and roll by.

Rogers Plaza is the second Main Event location and will also provide live music, various family-friendly activities, the DYNO area, Miss Metro Cruise Finale competition, and the Wyoming High School Color Guard and Drumline.

Woodland Mall to collect food donations for students at back-to-school event Aug. 19

Woodland Mall and The Salvation Army in Kent County are helping local students get ready to go back to school with a fun event and food drive 12 p.m. – 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 19.

The event will serve as a fundraiser for The Salvation Army’s emergency food pantry. It will also feature a variety of activities for all ages to enjoy in Woodland Mall’s Macy’s Court.

On a monthly basis, The Salvation Army feeds 550 people, including 145 children, and that number is increasing daily.

“We used to provide people with enough food to last three to five days,” said Victoria Arnold, director of Kent County Social Services. “Due to increased demand, we now provide enough food for six days. And we predict we will need another $10,000 alone to stay at that level, just for the next year.”

Attendees are encouraged to bring shelf-stable food donations to the event or make a monetary donation online to support Salvation Army Kent County Social Services, which provides food pantries, warm meals and sack lunches for community members in need. Personal care items, household products, clothing and baby essentials are also accepted.

“Countless families struggle to access nutritious food, and most affected are children,” said Mikia Ross, interim Senior Marketing Director for Woodland Mall. “To help address this issue, we’re focusing on promoting nutrition for children and families during this year’s back-to-school season and encouraging the community to participate by donating to our charitable partner, Salvation Army. Together, we can help students get the fuel they need to start their academic year out strong!”

Suggested items for donation include:

  • Canned goods, including meats, fruits and vegetables, with a pop top.
  • Pasta and pasta sauces.
  • Ramen noodles.
  • Macaroni and cheese.

While supporting the nonprofit, event attendees will be able to meet special characters like Princess Tiana and Captain America, enjoy DJ music and games, get their faces painted, make friendship bracelets, view back-to-school fashion displays and get makeover consultations. Those who make a monetary or food donation will also be able to capture memories with a photo booth.

Woodland Mall will host the second annual Unity Walk to Honor Martin Luther King Jr. with the City of Kentwood and the ninth African American Live Museum with New Hope Baptist Church on Saturday, Feb. 25.

To kick off the day’s events, community members are invited to gather at the food court inside Woodland Mall, 3195 28th St. SE, at 11 a.m. for a walk that will end in front of Von Maur at 11:30 a.m. A ceremony will immediately follow and feature welcoming remarks from Kentwood Mayor Stephen Kepley, a proclamation presented by various community members, live music and refreshments.

 “We’re grateful for the opportunity to again host our Unity Walk to Honor MLK at Woodland Mall,” Kepley said. “It will be the start to a great day celebrating the life and work of Martin Luther King Jr., as well as other leading African American figures through New Hope Baptist Church’s Live Museum. We welcome community members of all ages to join us.” 

More than 25 live performances

The Unity Walk will be followed by the African American Live Museum presented by New Hope Baptist Church. Starting at 1 p.m., community members can witness more than 25 live performances featuring notable African American figures throughout history and in current culture across several areas, including politics, sports, science, arts and entertainment. Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald and Judge Kentaji Brown Jackson will be among the legends appearing throughout the mall until 5 p.m.

A distinguishing factor of the Live Museum is how the performers, ranging in age from 10 to 66, bring their persona to life by adopting mannerisms of the legendary figures they are portraying while sharing facts and stories from their lives. Visitors can watch and listen to the performances to learn about the figures and enjoy the realistic depictions. 

 

“The African American Live Museum is one of our outreach ministries with the intentionality of relationship building,” said Dr. Cathy Large, drama ministry leader of New Hope Baptist Church. “This is a great opportunity to help educate the community about the historic achievements of Black Americans and to share the wonderful talents of our performers.”

Spring arrives at Woodland Mall with photos with a fun bunny, special Tea Party

Photos with Santa are always a winter holiday family treat at Woodland Mall, and now a spring fling in the same vein is returning as starting March 26 photos with a big, fun “Springtime” bunny will be available through April 16.

And that is not all of the local family springtime events as the Mad Hatter Tea Party is set to return on Saturday, April 9.

“Seasonal family portraits are a beautiful way to capture memories of your loved ones,” Alyson Presser, marketing manager for Woodland Mall, said in supplied material. “You can either pose with the bunny or choose a spring-themed portrait area for a seasonal photo with your family, friends and pets.”

Bunny and family photos will be available in the Macy’s Court from noon to 7 p.m., Mondays through Thursdays; 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays; and noon to 6 p.m., Sundays. (For the last weekend before Easter Sunday, there will be extended hours of 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, April 15, and Saturday, April 16.

Pets can join in for photos noon-7 p.m. every Monday. Feathered and whiskered pets of all kinds are welcome as long as they are kept on a leash or in a carrier at all times. (Owners must also sign a release.)

Reservations are encouraged and can be made online. Walk-up visits are permitted when space is available.

And that Mad Hatter Tea Party

On April 9 guests are invited to attend the Mad Hatter Tea Party from 10 a.m. to noon. The Alice in Wonderland-themed event will include special appearances by the Mad Hatter himself, as well as Alice and the Red Queen. There will also be spring-themed crafts, snacks and games.

The event is free and open to the public. Those who attend the tea party are encouraged to reserve their bunny photos the day of to win a $10 gift card to The Children’s Place, a children’s specialty apparel retailer.

“Our Mad Hatter Tea Party makes celebrating the arrival of spring and taking photos with the bunny all the more magical,” Presser said. “We welcome everyone to enjoy this fun and interactive take on a Lewis Carroll classic story with activities that bring out the child in all of us.”

Phoenix Theatres at Woodland Mall to open April 14 — and Hollywood style marquee will show the way

High-quality moviegoing experiences — in sight, sound and all-reclining seats — will soon be coming to Woodland Mall as Phoenix Theatres has announced it will be opening its planned 14-screen complex on the mall’s south side in April.

The recently installed vertical marquee, spelling out PHOENIX, is sure to show moviegoers the way.

The marquee, composed of more than 200 light bulbs, was designed with a classical 1920s and ’30s style in homage to the Chicago Theatre, Jordan Hohman, local executive, recently told WKTV during a backstage tour. The building overall carries a refined art deco style that makes “going to the movies” special again, honoring “tradition” while still providing a “new, modern experience.”

“The theatre can’t just be a ‘box’. You really have to have some character, a face to this business,” Cory Jacobson, owner of Phoenix Theatres, said.

The location is expected to open to the general public Thursday, April 14, after special opening events early that week.

Construction is progressing rapidly, with carpeting almost completely fitted and reclining seats added on the daily. At the location there will be four large, three mid-sized, and seven small auditoriums. And, management says,  those 14 screens at this location will be the most screens of any Phoenix Theatres location, and will be the 50th screen of the Michigan-based company.

“Like celebrating a fiftieth wedding anniversary,” Jacobson said.

 

Phoenix Theatres will screen films utilizing the powerful Dolby Atmos sound system, making for some of the highest cinema sound quality in the country, Hohman said.

From above, numerous speakers shape sound moving throughout the room. Below, subwoofer speakers in every seat bring the frequency of film audio directly to your chair. This extensive, detailed sound system makes Dolby Atmos the doorway to “improved immersion in films,” Hohman said.

Jacobson actually told a story that Douglas Trumbull, the famous photographic effects supervisor for the classic “2001: A Space Odyssey”, said Phoenix provided the best presentation of the film he had ever seen — and heard — in 50 years.

To promote its new place in the community the theatre is planning to have a ticket giveaway, which can be entered on the company website. First prize is a VIP ticket giving admission to 52 films in the first year, followed by second and third place prizes as well.

Phoenix management is also reaching out to news media and holding press conferences, to make a big initial spash.

When it comes to a grand opening, “You only get one bite at the apple,” Hohman said.

Phoenix Theatres also plan to offer unique experiences through Fathom Events, including Turner Classic Movie showings, anniversary films like celebration of the classic “Casablanca” on its 80th anniversary, and live showings from the Metropolitan Opera.

Fathom is a good chance for many to “explore an interest in operatic shows that would otherwise be difficult to access,” Hohman said. Large sports games and other “live events” may also be shown.

The lobby will include self-serve drinks for faster service, as well as a new lounge with a grand piano. Additionally, the halls are to be lined with photographs of historic local theatres.
 

Despite advanced sound and video systems, and a retro aesthetic, Phoenix Theatres will carry “friendly” film prices.

“You shouldn’t have to pick between a trip to the movies or a trip out of town,” Hohman said.

Kentwood’s MLK Unity Walk rescheduled for March 5, inside at Woodland Mall

After frigid temperatures in January resulted in the postponement of the City of Kentwood’s Unity Walk to Honor Martin Luther King Jr., the city announced this week that the event has been rescheduled for Saturday, March 5, and moved indoors at Woodland Mall.

Residents of all ages are invited to gather at the food court inside Woodland Mall, 3195 28th St. SE, at 9:30 a.m., for a walk that will end at 10 a.m., in front of the inside entrance to Von Maur.

A ceremony will immediately follow and feature a proclamation, live music, coffee and cake. The event is free and open to the public.

Donations of canned goods and other nonperishable items will be accepted to stock Kentwood’s Little Free Pantry, which began as an MLK Day community service project to fill an immediate and local need. Since then, the city has continued to host food drives to keep the pantry well-stocked.

“While MLK Day serves as a timely, annual reminder of the life and work of Martin Luther King Jr., every day is a great day to celebrate his legacy and take part in activities that honor his values,” Mayor Stephen Kepley said in supplied material. “We’re grateful for the opportunity to host our Unity Walk to Honor MLK at Woodland Mall. It is the perfect local venue for us to be able to gather together, no matter the weather.”

Woodland Mall marketing manager Alyson Presser stated that the event is “in line with the spirit of the mall’s ongoing initiatives and events that encourage guests to support the Black community throughout the year,” according to the announcement.

“We are committed to celebrating and supporting the Black community beyond Black History Month and other annual observances,” Presser said. “We’re honored to work with the City of Kentwood to bring another meaningful opportunity for the local community to celebrate the historic achievements and continued advancement of Black Americans.”

Kentwood’s first Little Free Pantry opened in 2017 at the Kentwood Activities Center, 355 48th St. SE, where it remains available year-round during business hours. The second Little Free Pantry was opened last year at the Kent District Library – Kentwood (Richard L. Root) Branch for the community to visit during library hours. Anyone can utilize or donate to the pantry.

Staying healthy in 2022 — Woodland Mall set to host Health & Wellness Expo on Feb. 19

Woodland Mall has announced plans to help those “looking to maintain your resolutions to stay fit and healthy in 2022” with a free Heath & Wellness Expo planned for Saturday, Feb. 19.
 

A dozen or more vendors will showcase their products and services from noon to 7 p.m., according to an announcement this week from the mall. From exercise equipment to better sleep, and workout clothing to healthy eating, shoppers will be able to connect with experts focused on promoting an active, engaged and healthy lifestyle.

“We’re all looking to improve our health and well-being,” Alyson Presser, marketing manager for Woodland Mall, said in supplied material. “We have drawn from our own retailers and invited a curated collection of West Michigan’s top organizations for this year’s Health & Wellness Expo, which can help shoppers keep their resolutions and live their best and healthiest lives.”

The event is free and open to the public. Booths will be set up throughout the mall.

Woodland Mall is all set to celebrate the holiday season and its traditions with special holiday shopping and festivities, starting this week with the return of Photos with Santa, an Angel Tree benefitting families and supporting the Salvation Army, and — of course — Black Friday deals looming.

“It’s exciting to see Woodland Mall transform again for the most exciting time of the year,” Alyson Presser, Woodland Mall marketing manager, said in supplied material. “In particular this year, we encourage our shoppers to shop early to ensure product availability and to exercise consideration to retail workers throughout the season.”

Santa, and more, ready for season

Santa will return to his seat in Macy’s court, from Nov. 17 to Dec. 24, to “listen to every child’s Christmas wish and can even read them a book,” according to an announcement from the mall. Reservations are encouraged but not required to have a photo taken with Santa. Digital photo packages are available with options to purchase prints and a family portrait.

On Saturday, Nov. 20, the mall will host a welcome event for Santa with a parade lead by the Kentwood High School Dance Team. From 10 am. to noon, Santa will be escorted on a train alongside a holiday penguin, traveling juggler and magician. The parade route will start in the Von Maur wing, travel through the JCPenney wing and end at Macy’s court.

Beginning Nov. 22, “fur babies” — family pets — will again be welcome to visit with Santa for photos on Mondays through Dec. 20. Feathered and whiskered pets of all kinds are welcome — Santa has met dogs, cats, chickens and even goats over the years. All pets may join as long as they are kept on a leash or in a crate at all times.

Santa will again bring his friends for extra special photo opportunities. Shoppers are invited to join their favorite characters beginning Nov. 23 on Tuesdays through Dec. 14 from 4-7 p.m. Reservations are encouraged but not required. Celebrate the season for a good cause

Woodland Mall has partnered with the Salvation Army to give back to children in the community. Shoppers will find the Salvation Army Angel Tree in the Macy’s wing near the Apple Store starting Nov. 19 and running through Dec. 15.

Unwrapped gifts can be dropped off at the Mall Management Office between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. After office hours, gifts can be dropped off with mall security.

And, of course, Black Friday

Woodland Mall will be closed on Thanksgiving Day to allow retail employees to enjoy the holiday with their families. The mall will reopen at 7 a.m. Friday, Nov. 26, so guests can enjoy an early start to the traditional shopping weekend.

Woodland Mall hours leading up to the holidays are Monday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to  9 p.m., and Sunday, noon to 6 p.m. (But, hint to shoppers, to avoid the crowds, Woodland Mall recommends shopping Monday through Thursday when traffic is at a lighter pace.)

On Christmas Eve, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day, the mall will be open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Woodland Mall will be closed on Christmas Day. On Dec. 26, the mall will be open 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

People who have a history of cruising with the 28th Street Metro Cruise know it once extended from Cascade to Wyoming, with Woodland Mall a good middle point turnaround for some.

Bob O’Callaghan, President/CEO of the Wyoming-Kentwood Area Chamber of Commerce, the hosting organization of the Metro Cruise, would like to see those days return.

But this year, just having the event extend its footprint and have a presence at Woodland Mall is a big step in the right direction.

“Woodland (Mall) has been an endpoint for a lot of folks going east,” O’Callaghan said to WKTV. “We are trying to get more people in Cascade, or whatever, doing events that go all the way, the full 13 miles. But at this point Woodland has been a great way to do that.”

The 28th Street Metro Cruise officially kicks-off Friday, Aug. 27, at 4 p.m., at its usual and main location at Rogers Plaza in Wyoming, and will continue Saturday, Aug. 28.

As in past years, the Rogers Plaza mall parking lot will feature food trucks and concessionaires, hundreds of collector cars, a kid’s entertainment area, a community awards ceremony, the crowd-favorite Miss Metro Cruise competition finals, live music on the Metro-Main Stage, and the popular Dynamometer car testing area where attendees can see cars rev up to 160 mph. But at the second Main Event site, located on the off 28th Street at Woodland Mall, on Saturday, Aug. 28, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., will feature a wide array of collector, sports, and antique cars. It will also feature multiple food vendors including local food trucks, and official Metro Cruise merchandise.
 

“The good thing about this event here at Woodland Mall is that it is an opportunity for some of the folks in Cascade, Ada, who usually drive down to Rogers Plaza but don’t want to, have a closer venue,” O’Callaghan said. “We’ll have a lot of folks come into see the cars, and we’ll have a lot of folks just want see what it is. … It is a great opportunity for people to come in, park, look at the cars, and have a good time.”

O’Callaghan also expressed gratitude to the management of Woodland Mall for working with the Metro Cruise — “We are glad to have them be part of this for this year and hope it grows.”

And Woodland Mall is happy to be part of the festivities.

“We are looking forward again to welcoming the 28th Street Metro Cruise to Woodland Mall,” Mikia Ross, interim senior marketing director for Woodland Mall, said to WKTV. “In addition to providing shoppers and guests with an excellent selection of shopping, dining and entertainment offerings, we also host many free events and programs for the community to enjoy year-round. … Metro Cruise is one of many events we’ve been grateful to be a part of again this year to bring the West Michigan community together.”

More than 20 regional businesses will showcase their goods and services during the return of the Black-Owned Business Showcase at Woodland Mall on Saturday, Aug. 14 — and there are still booths available.

The event enjoyed a strong response from the local community at its debut in 2020, according to an announcement from the mall, and will again feature booths with Black-owned businesses offering fashion apparel, food, shoes, jewelry, cosmetics, kitchen items, gifts, stationery and cards, financial planning, health and wellness items, photography, home services and goods, and more.

Shoppers will be able to browse, sample, buy and connect during the day-long showcase from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

“In response to strong consumer demand, we are so pleased to offer this showcase for a second consecutive year,” Mikia Ross, interim senior marketing director for Woodland Mall, said in supplied material. “We appreciate the opportunity to open the mall’s doors to support Black-owned businesses serving our community. There will truly be something for everyone at this event, and we look forward to welcoming these entrepreneurs and their companies.”

Woodland Mall is owned by PREIT, which launched its Support Black-Owned Business and Brands 365 in February as part of an ongoing effort to spotlight Black-owned entrepreneurs and brands within its portfolio of top-tier and region-leading properties in eight states.

Woodland is one of 10 PREIT properties to offer a Black-Owned Business Showcase in August. PREIT properties have hosted activities throughout the year, including art exhibits, documentary screenings and food festivals, as a way to highlight the importance of Black-owned businesses and brands.

In Kentwood, shared goals bring churches and police department together on National Night Out

The City of Kentwood’s National Night Out community celebration this week had police and other city personal at more than 15 locations throughout the city, but events at three local churches clearly showed a shared desire to engage the community after a long period of pandemic distancing.

On the evening of Aug. 3, at Ada Bible Church on East Paris Avenue — which along with Faith Baptist Church and Pentecostals Church on 44th Street hosted special large scale events — Kentwood Police Chief Richard Roberts and Ada Bible pastor Jason Ross talked to WKTV about their shared focus on the community.

“What we share, is we desire to connect with the community in a positive way,” pastor Ross said. “We can do that as a church. We can also do that with the people, within Ada Bible Church, as well as in the community. … We want you to feel like you are welcome here.”

Chief Roberts also talked about the shared focus and the great opportunity of interacting with the community at local churches.

“We are privileged to be invited to Ada Bible Church … This just gives us a great opportunity, especially given this past year, for us to all come out and celebrate in a special way on National Night Out,” Chief Roberts said.

The City of Kentwood was truly bustling with block parties, neighborhood events and other activities — including a special presence at Woodland Mall — on National Night Out, a nationwide annual event that “promotes community-police partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make communities safer.”

Kentwood police officers, firefighters and city leaders joined residents, who had the opportunity to explore police cruisers, fire engines and other emergency response vehicles at events, as well as learn about a variety of safety topics.

“Positive interactions with residents are invaluable for fostering strong community relationships and safer neighborhoods,” Chief Roberts previously said in supplied material. “National Night Out creates a wonderful opportunity to bring officers and community members together in a fun and relaxing setting. Members of our department always look forward to getting to know residents better and encourage more open lines of communication.”

National Night Out was created in the 1980s through an established network of law enforcement agencies, neighborhood watch groups, crime prevention associations and volunteers across the nation. It began with a goal to promote safer, better neighborhoods by uniting community members and police against neighborhood crimes.

 

Woodland Mall’s new theater tenant brings high tech, soft seats and a family business outlook to Kentwood

At a special announcement at Woodland Mall this week, new mall movie-theater tenant Phoenix Theaters’ management team made clear that “big company” high-tech visuals, solid sound and premium seats will be the standard when the mall’s theater building reopens as early as this fall.

But Phoenix Theatres CEO Cory Jacobson also made clear to the small crowd at the mall Tuesday, July 27, that, in his “small” movie-theater company, families come first at Phoenix and in its theaters, and COO John Scanlan, talking to WKTV, made clear that Phoenix’s nimble “small” company structure is one of the reasons they were able to take advantage of the Woodland Mall opportunity.

The company is a 21-year-old independently owned movie theatre company that plans to invest $4 million to refurbish the 14-screen theatre, according to supplied material, a project which will expand a company which operates several theaters in Southeast Michigan as well as one each in Iowa and Massachusetts.

It is also a company which prides itself on having employees who have worked their way up from taking tickets and popping popcorn, to top-level management.

“All these people have something in common. They have all worked for our company for many, many years,” Jacobson said as he introduced his management team to the crowd at Woodland Mall. “All of the senior staff started out popping popcorn, ripping tickets, selling concession items.”
 

After Jacobson and others of the management team talked to the Woodland Mall crowd about his company’s “family” outlook, and his theaters’ amenities including plush twin seats that can be opened up for customer “families,” Scanlan also talked to WKTV about how being a now-not-so-small family-owned company allowed it to move quickly when the Woodland Mall opportunity presented itself. “We are still nimble enough to pivot, and move, and we all work so closely together that we are  able to make these decision fairly quickly,” Scanlon said. “We have one owner (Cory Jacobson), we do not have to worry about having a group thought. … Cory can make decisions on the fly and that allows us to make decisions on the fly as well.”

Phoenix Theatres at Woodland Mall is the first major post-pandemic theatre investment in West Michigan, “signaling renewed confidence in the strength of this property and the regional economy,” according to PREIT, the mall’s parent company.

For Phoenix Theatres CEO Jacobson, the Woodland Mall expansion just felt right from the moment he first visited.

“Phoenix Theatres has always been a neighborhood theatre company, and that’s something we’re very proud of,” Jacobson said in supplied material. “After spending several weeks exploring the city, we felt very much at home in the culture of the community. Movie theatres are places where people come together to enjoy themselves. Creating an environment that celebrates community has always been our highest goal.”

After the renovations at the Woodland Mall location, the theater will be a 14-screen theatre within the 47,000-square-foot building, and will feature all-new premium reclining heated seating, 4K digital projection, Dolby Atmos, first-run movies and “family-friendly pricing.”

Woodland Mall’s Fathers Day promotion supports Kentwood’s Little Free Pantry

Woodland Mall is celebrating fathers by giving back to the community through a virtual contest with a portion of proceeds going to support local families though the City of Kentwood’s Little Free Pantry.

Currently running and through June 16, Woodland Mall is participating in partner company PREIT’s online giveaway, “Best Dad Ever,” where shoppers can nominate their dad on the mall’s website to win one of three giveaway packages best suited for their personality,” according to a supplied material.

To enter, nominators share “Why their dad is the best out there.” Three great fathers — “Gadget Dad”, “Grilling Expert”, and “Man of Style” — will be selected with the fathers winning $50 gift cards from Apple and On the Boarder, Macy’s and Red Robin, and J.Crew and Black Rock Bar & Grill, respectively.
  

Woodland Mall will then donate $1 dollar for every giveaway entry to Kentwood’s Little Free Pantry, up to $1,000.

According to Feeding America, food banks are serving 55 percent more people than before the pandemic, making the Little Free Pantry, which has helped feed thousands in the community since its opening in 2017, even more essential.

“We’re delighted to partner with Kentwood’s Little Free Pantry for this giveaway in honor of all the incredible fathers out there,” Mikia Ross, senior marketing director for PREIT, said in supplied material. “The hallmark of a great dad is his dedication to taking care of his family. ‘Staycationing’ this Spring Break? Woodland Mall has out-of-the-house events planned

Just in time for Spring Break — and those staycationers looking to get out of the house but staying close to home — Woodland Mall will be open for more hours and offering special events for everyone to safely enjoy time off from school and work.

Starting Monday, April 5, the mall will be returning to pre-pandemic operating hours, Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday noon to 6 p.m., according to an announcement from the mall. And several events are planned including a Small Business Expo and Pokémon Go opportunities.

“For those families who still aren’t comfortable traveling, Woodland Mall is the perfect spring break destination,” Cecily McCabe, Woodland Mall marketing director, said in supplied material. “From shopping to games and other creative opportunities, we are eager to help families enjoy a safe and fun staycation experience.”

Woodland Mall will host a Small Business Expo in its Von Maur wing on Saturday, April 10, from 11 a.m.–7 p.m., where business owners will set up booths to showcase their products and engage with the community. Guests will in turn have the opportunity to learn more about these small businesses and support them.

With the weather warming up, it’s the perfect time to build your own skateboard. Vans and Zumiez have all the gear needed to build a customized board.

Pokémon fans will also be able to collect free stickers and trading cards from GameStop throughout the week. As an added bonus, the mall has two Pokéstops for those playing Pokémon Go.

More than 30 local artisans will be at Woodland Mall Saturday, March 20, for the mall’s first ever Spring Craft Bash, a 1-day event that will showcase a wide variety of handcrafted and vendor Items for sale.

The event, scheduled from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., will allow shoppers to browse for such items as books, games, artwork, skincare, home decor items, jewelry, succulents “and more” in the Von Maur wing of the mall.

“We are looking forward to showcasing more than 30 local artisans during our first Spring Craft Bash,” said Cecily McCabe, marketing director for Woodland Mall, said in supplied material. “Whether you’re in the market for a gift for a loved one, or something nice for yourself, there’s sure to be great options for everyone to enjoy while supporting local entrepreneurs.”

Woodland Mall initiative to help Black-owned businesses and brands all year long

Woodland Mall, and parent company PREIT, knows it is good for business and good for the local community to support Black-owned businesses and to support brands focused on the Black community, and not just during Black History Month.

Through its “Support Black-Owned Businesses and Brands 365” initiative, the Mall has created a home on its shopwoodlandmall.com website highlighting Black-owned retailers, fashion brands, cosmetics, fragrance lines, books, music and other products for sale within other retailers at  the mall.

“We feel this was a concrete step we could take to encourage our guests to support Black-owned businesses throughout the year,” Cecily McCabe, Woodland Mall marketing manager, said in supplied material. “The past year has been challenging for many retailers, but Black-owned businesses have been disproportionately impacted by the pandemic. Consumers can now make even more informed buying decisions that will directly support Black entrepreneurs in our community.”
 

According to an announcement this week from the Mall, this is part of an ongoing effort by the Mall’s parent company, PREIT, to “spotlight Black-owned entrepreneurs and brands within its portfolio of top-tier and region-leading properties in eight states.”

During the coming year, at least two-thirds of PREIT properties also plan to host community-wide Black-owned Business Showcases, providing entrepreneurs with a venue to showcase their goods and services.

Woodland Mall was the first property in the PREIT portfolio to host a showcase, welcoming more than 80 regional Black-owned businesses in October 2020, and the Mall plans to do so again in August.

PREIT properties are also planning events and activities throughout the year as a way to highlight the importance of Black-owned business and brands beyond Black History Month. During 2021, Woodland Mall has hosted an art exhibit, documentary screening and this past weekend’s successful pop-up shop welcoming Black-owned entrepreneurs to the mall.

Mall, retailers have history of Black community support

Woodland Mall is already home to Boutique Boulevard, a unique women’s clothing and accessories retailer curated from locally owned Black businesses. The store is located in the Barnes and Noble wing near Kay Jewelers.

Woodland Mall retailers also feature a wide variety of Black-owned brands and merchandise, including products that can be found at Sephora, including, Fenty Beauty by Rihanna, Briogeo by Nancy Twine and others. The JCPenney Salon features Hair by Athulia, which specializes in luxury hair care for women of color.

Macy’s honors and celebrates “the brilliant legacies woven into the fabric of Black history and experience,” by spotlighting Black creators and change makers who continue to make their mark. Macy’s is also committed to empowering future leaders by supporting UNCF and Black Girls CODE through donations at the register or online.

Williams Sonoma is paying tribute to the historic achievements of generations of African Americans in the culinary arts and beyond. Shoppers can get cooking with great recipes and expert cooking tips and explore cookbooks by Black authors.

Woodland Mall to host ‘LOVE.ART.HISTORY.’ exhibit, local documentary film during Valentine’s weekend

In honor of Black History Month, Woodland Mall will host the first LOVE.ART.HISTORY. art exhibit as well as screenings of “In Between the Trees,” a documentary about African American history in the Michigan produced with the support of WKTV Community Media, over Valentine’s Day weekend, Feb. 12-14.

With themes of love, Black culture and Black history, the pop-up art exhibit by ArtXchangeGR, will “acknowledge and celebrate talented local artists of color, Black History Month and Valentine’s Day,” according to a statement from Woodland Mall.

Shoppers will be able to view original works of fine art and reproductions available for purchase during the three-day exhibit, from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., starting Friday and Saturday, Feb. 12-13, and noon-6 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 14. The free show will be located in the mall’s center court.

“We are honored to host this timely pop-up art exhibit to lift up local artists of color,” Cecily McCabe, marketing manager for Woodland Mall, said in supplied material. “We appreciate the opportunity to showcase an amazing group of artists and their artwork, which will highlight Black culture and history.”

Artists who will be featured throughout the weekend include Olivia Thorns, Lowell Reynolds and Steven Reynolds. ArtXchangeGR will hold a reception for all participating artists at the mall from noon to 3 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 13.

Across the hall from the exhibit, Rose Hammond will be showing her documentary, “In Between the Trees,” multiple times a day. The film, which has just been selected to be shown at the Montreal Independent Film Festival, is loosely based on Hammond’s book “Idlewild & Woodland Park, MI (An African American Remembers).”

Hammond, who has a long history as a community volunteer and producer at WKTV, edited much of the film at WKTV.

Inspired by her grandparents’ stories, Hammond’s film shares what life in Idlewild and Woodland Park, Mich., was like for people of color “with the intent to educate youth and individuals of the African American history in our country,” according to supplied material.

“After seeing the racial justice events that occurred throughout our nation last year, many of us made a promise to educate ourselves,” McCabe said. “Presenting this documentary allows Woodland Mall to provide the opportunity for our community to continue engaging in these important conversations.”

Even in this usually busy holiday season now made difficult by the COVID-19 pandemic, Woodland Mall and Vera Bradley — and the local community — are working to help families which are struggling to put food on the table.

Through Dec. 13, Vera Bradley’s Woodland Mall location is collecting nonperishable food items for local nonprofit Feeding American West Michigan, according to a Dec. 7 announcement. Woodland Mall will additionally “give back” to a group that supported mall employees in their time of need by matching each food item with a $1 donation to Feeding America.

“Feeding America West Michigan fed our staff laid off during the shutdown this spring,” Cecily McCabe, Woodland Mall marketing director, said in supplied material. “To show our deep appreciation to this incredible organization and to help those struggling with the pandemic’s harsh consequences, we are honored to return the favor.”

Every dollar donated by the mall will provide four meals to people experiencing food insecurity in our region, according to the announcement.

Nonperishable items may be dropped off at Vera Bradley, which is located in the JCPenney wing of Woodland Mall, 3195 28th St. SE, during store hours: 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Thursday; 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Friday and Saturday; and noon to 6 p.m., Sunday.
 

Suggested items include peanut butter, whole-grain pasta, macaroni and cheese, rice, dried grains, canned vegetables, fruits, beans, canned chicken and fish, canned soup or soup mix, and canned or dried beans.

McCabe also said that Woodland Mall and its realtors are simply doing what they can to  support a community that has supported them with their shopping in good times.

“It’s clear that supporting one another through this pandemic has been the most essential role each of us can take on,” she said. “As our industry enters what traditionally has been our busiest time of year, we are so happy to share what we do have.”

Woodland Mall to offer ‘Holiday Your Way’ options for shoppers, families this season

Woodland Mall announced this week that “to keep West Michigan safe without sacrificing the holiday spirit,” the Kentwood area shopping mall will offer a variety of options for a “Holiday Your Way” experience that allows the community to partake in the season’s traditions however they feel most comfortable.

Accommodating preferences for visiting the mall in person, virtually, or a combination, Woodland Mall will continue hosting annual events such as photos with Santa and Black Friday shopping. But in-person shopping will come with enhanced safety options to prevent the spread of COVID-19, as well as limited-contact shopping options have been extended and expanded throughout the season.

“There’s no doubt holiday traditions and shopping will look different this year, but we are working to create safe and fun options for our community,” Cecily McCabe, Woodland Mall marketing director, said supplied material. “We don’t want anyone to miss out on the magical experience this season, so Woodland Mall is providing opportunities for everyone to partake in person, virtually or with greater physical distance from others.”

Photos with Santa, other holiday options available

Santa has returned to Woodland Mall’s Arctic Forest and will be present through Dec. 24 “to listen to every child’s Christmas wish and/or, new this year, read them a book,” according to the announcement. And while Santa will not be giving hugs or high-fives this year, children of all ages are invited to sit on a bench next to him to ensure everyone can stay healthy “and Santa can safely deliver presents on Christmas Eve.”

While photos with Santa will be available, Children, families and all Santa’s helpers will be required to wear face coverings that can be removed briefly for photos.

Also, families choosing to stay home can also video conference with Santa this year.

“Fur babies” — family pets — are again welcome to visit with Santa this year on Mondays through Dec. 15. All sorts of pets are able to meet Santa, as in the past he has met West Michigan cats, chickens and even goats. All pets may join as long as they are kept on a leash or in a crate at all times.

Tuesday nights from Nov. 24 to Dec. 8 will feature a special character meet-and-greet with superheroes, princesses and other surprise friends. The themed photo opportunities will be offered from 5-7 p.m. and include a gift with every photo purchase.

To eliminate crowds and lines, appointments must be made prior to meeting with Santa for all those visiting whether in person or virtually. Appointments can be made online at shopwoodlandmall.com.

Shopping Black Friday and more

Woodland will be closed on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, Nov. 26, to allow retail employees to enjoy the holiday with their family. But the mall will reopen at 7 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 27, with increased safety protocols, including enhanced cleaning with products recommended by the CDC.

To complement Black Friday shopping, the mall will host 12 Days of Deals Dec. 1-12 via Facebook events. The events will showcase exclusive and limited offerings from retailers throughout the mall. Those following the virtual events will be notified of these deals each day.

Woodland Mall will additionally continue offering limited-contact options and services throughout the season. For those who prefer shopping in person but are wary of the holiday crowds, several stores, including Von Maur, J. Crew and the newly opened White House Black Market, will offer times with personal stylists after hours. TempurPedic will also offer individual appointments after hours.

Retailers participating in the mall’s Mall2Go: Contact-Free Pickup program will provide pickup and delivery options for those choosing not to enter the mall.

Gifts wrapped for a good cause

The mall will also offer gift wrapping in the Von Maur wing, as Woodland Mall has partnered with several nonprofit organizations to provide this free service for gifts large and small in exchange for a cash donation. (Charities wishing to participate may register online.)

“Supporting our local economy has become particularly important throughout the pandemic,” McCabe said in supplied material. “Holiday Your Way has made it easy for people to choose how they shop at Woodland Mall and we are doing everything we can to make it easy for people to stay safe.”

The mall will also offer extended hours this holiday season, but also urge shoppers to  “skip the crowds, shop Monday through Thursday when traffic is at a lighter pace.”

Woodland Mall to host family-friendly outdoor ‘Pop-up Fall Festival’ Oct. 17

Woodland Mall announced this week that it will celebrate the fall season — the beautiful leaves, crisp air and, of course, caramel apples — this weekend when it hosts a Pop-Up Fall Festival in the Von Maur parking lot.

The outdoor event, which the entire family can enjoy while remaining safe and healthy, will take place on Saturday, Oct. 17, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., in collaboration with ACP Entertainment.

“We’re looking forward to celebrating the season and all the great activities and goodies it brings,” Woodland Mall Marketing Director Cecily McCabe said in supplied material. “Despite the limitations of COVID, we’ve been working hard to offer some fall fun that will allow us to gather and enjoy autumn safely. We’ll certainly be using Michigan’s beautiful fall weather to our advantage.”

According to the announcement, the festival will offer treats such as elephant ears, caramel apples, caramel corn, donuts and cider all day for participants to enjoy. Those interested may choose to either drive through or walk up to booths to purchase these treats, which can be purchased with cash or card. Seating will not be provided — participants are asked to enjoy the fall treats in their vehicles.

Festival activities will take place from noon to 4 p.m. and will include a bounce house, corn maze, spinning strawberry, train rides and more. Tickets can be purchased online or at the door. Only those planning to participate in activities need tickets.

Per state and Kent County Health Department guidance, the attraction area will be limited to 100 guests or fewer at a time and all participants will be required to wear a mask. There will be plenty of hand sanitizing stations and room for physical distancing.
 

Deep cleaning and sanitization of all attractions will take place throughout the day, according to the announcement.

Woodland Mall to host Employment Expo on Oct. 15 with ‘hundreds’ of jobs available

Woodland Mall will host an Employment Expo on Thursday, Oct. 15, from 1-7 p.m., with nearly 30 West Michigan employers seeking to fill hundreds of positions in the mall and around the community, according to an announcement this week from management.

Job seekers will have the opportunity to learn about full-time, part-time and seasonal positions with Allied Universal and Peoplemark, the two title sponsors of the event. Other area employers in the cleaning and maintenance, quick food service and health care industries will also be on-site.

Many retailers at the mall are also hiring for both full-time and seasonal positions. A variety of Woodland Mall clothing, shoe and jewelry retailers as well as restaurants will participate in the expo with a variety of employment opportunities including full-time management roles. Wow, sushi — Woodland Mall to welcome nine new retailers, restaurants this fall

Woodland Mall’s expanding line-up of retailers and restaurants has or will gain nine new arrivals this fall including the opening of Sephora and White House Black Market. And while you are shopping, a stop at the new WOW Sushi for lunch might be in order.

In addition, also now open at Woodland Mall are Jamba, Tempur-Pedic, Bath Planet and FunShop. WOW Sushi, The Zon3 and Windsor are set to open later this fall.

“We are delighted to welcome so many new arrivals to our growing portfolio of retailers and restaurants,” Cecily McCabe, Woodland Mall marketing director, said in supplied material. “We are looking forward to offering guests an expanded selection of shopping and dining options and a premium experience under our rigorous safety protocols.”

Sephora, now open in the Von Maur wing,  debuted in North America more than 20 years ago, and “has been a leader in prestige omni-retail with the purpose of creating an inviting beauty shopping experience and inspiring fearlessness in its community,” according to supplied material.

Also in the Von Maur wing, White House Black Market will open next to Bath & Body Works in early October. WHBM offers “polished black and white women’s clothing with pops of color and patterns for tailored dresses, tops, pants and accessories.”

WOW Sushi opened in the Café in the Woods Food Court at Woodland Mall Sept. 1. Men’s streetwear clothing store The Zon3 will open in the JCPenney wing near H&M in early October. In the Macy’s wing, Windsor will open near Shoe Encore across from Ann Taylor in early November.
 

Also on the list of new retailers and restaurants that recently opened is Jamba, located in the mall’s center court next to Starbucks. Jamba serves on-the-go freshly blended fruit and vegetable smoothies, made-to-order bowls, fresh-squeezed juices and shots, boosts and bites.

Shoppers will also discover FunShop, a new video arcade, in the Macy’s wing near Spencer’s. The space features a popular combination of the latest video and redemption games. Sanitizing wipes are available for customer use on high-touch areas.

Woodland Mall teams with parent company’s ‘sMALL Surprises’ effort for unique back-to-school program

The parent company of Kentwood’s Woodland Mall, PREIT, announced this week the launch of “sMALL Surprises”, a “first-of-its-kind curated shopping program from a mall owner/operator for the 2020 back-to-school season.”

Launched timed for the second busiest shopping season of the year, the curated packs will be customized for individual students — handpicking items from PREIT malls — to help students in grades K-8 prepare for school. The program is similar to subscription-based boxes from stand-alone retailers, according to the announcement.

“Woodland Mall is excited to offer this first-of-its-kind shopping program just in time for the back-to-school season,” Cecily McCabe, Woodland Mall marketing director, said to WKTV. “Each pack includes a delightful element of surprise with hand-selected products students need for whatever their schooling situation may be, making back-to-school shopping fun and easy for time-strapped families from the comfort of their home.”

The initiative offers shoppers the benefit of Woodland Mall’s collection of brands without going to the mall.

 

According to the announcement, sMALL Surprises marks PREIT’s first foray into the e-commerce space, “bridging online and offline shopping channels to better support both its customers and tenants.

“The blending of physical and digital in the modern retail environment has been critical to success, particularly as the industry continues to evolve and navigates the COVID-19 pandemic. While the 2020 back-to-school season may look different throughout the country, these curated packs are designed to offer goodies customized for any child — whether they’re in the classroom or learning from home.”

Each sMALL Surprise pack will contain a mix of items, according to the announcement, including “a selection of sensory toys/games, trendy accessories, sanitizing necessities, activity cards, stickers, and a few cool school supplies.”

Shoppers will visit SmallSurprises.Shop to select from two different pack options and then a short quiz that will help a professional stylist create a curated surprise pack. Once customized, the pack will be delivered direct-to-consumer anywhere in the United States.
