Before 1940, the only way residents could get to Ottawa County or the neighboring community of Georgetown Township was either by boat or driving to Grand Rapids to cross one of the Grand River bridges in the city. By the 1940s, a bridge had been installed in City of Grandville over the Grand River creating another entry and exit point for Ottawa and Kent counties. 28th Street would eventually be renamed the South Beltline as it was used as an alternative route around the city and becoming a commercial corridor. The photo comes from the Grandville Historical Museum.
This fall, the Wyoming Historical Commission will be releasing a book on the history of 28th Street.
