Fall has always been my favorite season. The time when everything bursts with its last beauty, as if nature had been saving up all year for the grand final.

Take the Family to a Fall Festival

A bounce house, corn maze, spinning strawberry, train rides and and lots of fall treats will be part Woodland Mall’s Pop-up Festival in the Von Maur Parking this Saturday. The event runs from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. with guests invited to stroll or drive through to snatch up an elephant ear or other fall treats. Or come from noon to 4 p.m. to partake in some of the activites. Tickets are required for the activities can be purchased online or at the event.

Finding those Neighborhood Ghosts

It is the season of ghosts and Grand Rapids certain has its share, so why not do a little ghost hunting? Wander the streets of Grand Rapids visiting some of the area’s historic places such as St. Cecilia Music Center with its musical apparitions or the Amway Grand, where some guests have liked the hotel so much that they haven’t checked out. It’s Adventure Time

Archery, donuts and more will be part of the Adventure Point‘s two days of fun fall activities taking place this Saturday and Sunday. The adventure center located at 3213 Walker Ave stretches over 35-acres of land waiting to be explored with goodies along its trails, or expect a little haunting fun if you opt for the evening adventure.

Fun Fact: The World’s Best Mouser

What is the best mousetrap? Cats. Which cat has caught the most mice that she is in the Guinness Book of World Records? That would be Towser, who in her 24 years of life managed to catch 28,899 mice. In fact, she was so good that the Glenturret Distillery, located in Scotland, where she lived, decided not only to raise a glass but erect a statute in her honor. By the way, the need for cats at the Scottish distilleries has greatly diminished over the years, but tradition being tradition, about every distillery still has a cat mascot.

As the weather gets colder and the leaves begin to change, it’s time to start celebrating the fall season! While you may not be jumping in leaf piles or going trick-or-treating anymore, there are still plenty of activities to fill your days and get you in the spirit of the season as an older adult. From decorating to baking delicious treats to visiting an orchard, here are some amusements that will keep you occupied for the entirety of autumn.

Indoor activities

If cold weather isn’t your thing, there’s no need to miss out on all the fall fun! Here are four great indoor activities that will help you celebrate no matter what the outside temperature is!

Create a knitted masterpiece

Not only has knitting been proven to be good for your mental and emotional health, but it helps get you in the mood for fall with cozy yarns in fall colors. Whether you are a beginner or a master, there is a knitted craft for you! Give your masterpieces away as gifts to your family and friends to help spread the fall spirit, or keep them for yourself as a reminder of your hard work!

Watch movies

From spooky Halloween classics like Nightmare on Elm Street to heartwarming fall romcoms like You’ve Got Mail, there are movies from every genre that will be a fit for everyone’s tastes! Gather your friends together and have weekly movie nights where you eat delicious snacks and watch all your fall favorites.

Start decorating

Decorating your home is one of the best ways to bring the fall atmosphere indoors! Surrounding yourself with decorations helps you stay in the right mindset for fall, no matter which direction you look! Pick a theme like Halloween or the outdoors, or just have fun adding in touches of everything you like. Examples of decorations can include:

Displays of pumpkins and gourds
Festive fall centerpieces
An autumn wreath on the front door
Leaf and pinecone table displays
Decorative candle holders for candles with fall scents
Additional pillows and throws in fall colors like orange, brown, and red

Make some baked goods

Baking not only lets you make tasty treats, but it will also fill your home with good smells and warmth from the oven. There are the classics like pumpkin and apple pies, but try pushing yourself with new recipes for baked goods you haven’t made before! Think of ways to use in-season fruits and veggies to make mouthwatering foods for family and friends—or to keep for yourself!

Outdoor activities

Want to get outside to see all that autumn has to offer? Take a look at these four ideas for outdoor activities that will help you experience the true beauty and some of the best joys of the fall season.

See the changing colors

Getting outside doesn’t have to be a big ordeal—just taking a simple walk and enjoying the fall foliage is a great way to experience the natural beauty of autumn. Breathing in the crisp air and taking photos of the prettiest trees can be both relaxing and good for your health. If you are artistically minded, try sketching or painting some of the sights you see!

Get ahead on gardening

Gardening may traditionally be a spring activity, but fall can be the best time to get prepped for next year! Planting perennials in fall ensures you have beautiful blooms come spring—without having to do the work then! You can also try container gardening and plant some late-blooming flowers in containers that can be outside until it gets too cold, then can be brought inside to enjoy!

Visit an orchard

There are orchards abound in the midwest, and now is the perfect time to visit one! Plan an outing with the grandkids, or just go with friends your own age. Orchards have many activities, from classic apple picking to pumpkin patches to hay rides. Many have homemade treats for sale, like donuts and fresh pressed apple cider. Make a whole day of visiting the orchard, and take your spoils home to either decorate or bake with!

Build a bonfire

Fall fun isn’t just limited to the daytime! After the sun sets is a perfect time to grab a bunch of blankets and warm up in front of a bonfire. You can roast marshmallows, tell scary stories, or just enjoy the company of others and those you love—all while feeling cozy, even as the weather grows colder around you.

There are lots of ways to enjoy autumn, even as an older adult. With all these activities and more at your fingertips, there’s no way you won’t have a wonderful fall and get into the spirit of the season everyday! A Cornucopia of Halloween Activities Offer a Fun-filled Bounty

‘Tis the season for really bad autumn references, and we apologize. As writers, we’re expected to be witty (or die trying).

But it’s with the spirit of sharing in mind that we’re here to tell you about several fun Halloween- and autumn-themed events. Consider it a consolation prize for the shorter days and colder nights. Heads up: These events span the spectrum of activities, from music to a Zombie Beer Fest, to hayrides… perfect for adults. And kids. And sometimes both.

Now through October 31 – Haunted Hall
Haunted Hall at Muskegon Fairgrounds, 6621 Heights Ravenna Road, Fruitport, Mich., Fri. and Sat. 7 pm. Go here for more information.

Now through November 7 – Post Family Farm Activities
The 80-acre Post Family Farm is overflowing with pumpkins, squash, gourds and more. U-pick pumpkins, hayrides, bonfires, homemade (peanut-free) pumpkin donuts, corn mazes, the list goes on. Fun Farm Days are Monday-Thursday, noon-7 pm; Friday noon-6 pm through Nov. 7. Fall Festivals are every Saturday 10 am-6 pm through October 25. 5081 Bauer Rd. Hudsonville. October 9 – Opening day of The Haunt
Celebrating 15 years of fear at 2070 Waldorf NW! New themes, the latest technology and one of the largest casts in the state. Visit the website for dates and times. General admission is $20. NOT recommended for kids under 12. Children 5 and younger will not be allowed in any attraction.

October 9-22 – ‘Drunk Stoned Brilliant Dead: The Story of the National Lampoon’
Biography/comedy. The film screens at 8 pm each evening at the UICA.

October 9-31 – ‘Forest of Fear’
Fundraiser for the Kentwood Jaycees. Are you afraid of the dark? This West Michigan haunted attraction has been entertaining thrill-seekers for over ten years. October 10 – Music at Pyramid Scheme

October 17 – Second Annual Zombie Beer Fest and Costume Contest

The Grand Rapids Main Library at 111 Library St. NE, observes the Mexican tradition “Dia de los Muertos” (Day of the Dead). Community members will honor deceased loved ones with altars that will be on display for three days at the library.

Glow in the Park, 7-10 pm in Beery Field, Downtown Douglas, Mich. Music, food, drink, plenty of glow-in-the-dark activities for the kids. Come in full glowing costume or get your glow on when you get there with face painting, glow balloons, black light areas, and a merchandise booth. Proceeds go to City of Douglas Halloween Fund to pay for the big parade and other Halloween activities.

October 31 – Founders Halloween Party

October 31 – Douglas Nighttime Halloween Parade for Adults
Leave the kids with the sitter and don’t miss the rise of the Pumpkin King from the ashes at 10 pm! This event draws thousands of people from Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Ohio and Wisconsin.
