One person is dead after a crash in the 3400 block of Burlingame Avenue SW.
At approximately 1:40 a.m. Oct. 25, police and fire personnel from the Wyoming Department of Public Safety responded to the 3400 block of Burlingame Avenue SW on the report of an individual riding a skateboard that had just been struck by a vehicle. Despite lifesaving efforts, the victim, a 22-year-old male resident of Wyoming, died at the scene.

Preliminary investigation indicates the male was riding a skateboard in the travel lanes of Burlingame Avenue when he was struck by a southbound vehicle. The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene to speak with police.

At approximately 12:15 p.m. on Sept. 21, the Wyoming Fire Department responded to several reports of a garage fire located near the area of 44th Street and Oriole Avenue SW.

The first arriving fire units observed a garage that was fully involved and quickly spreading to nearby homes and garages. Explosions were noted, likely from tires within the garage. The fire had already spread rapidly throughout the garage, causing significant smoke that could be seen from several miles away.
The fire also involved a Consumers Energy power pole and power lines above the area. Consumers Energy was contacted for an emergent response to cut power to this area while the fire was being extinguished.
The fire was extinguished, preventing it from fully spreading to the nearby house. A neighbor’s garage adjacent to the structure fire also sustained damage, along with nearby homes that suffered melted siding from the intense heat of the fire.
There were no injuries or fatalities, as the occupants were able to evacuate safely.

The Wyoming Fire Department was notified of this fire due to the actions of observant neighbors and passers-by who saw smoke and flames arising from the garage. Notifying 911 quickly helped Wyoming firefighters get on scene and successfully extinguish the fire and limit damage to nearby properties.

At approximately 6 a.m. on Aug. 4, the Wyoming Fire Department responded to reports of a commercial building fire located in the 2600 block of Prairie Street S.W.
The first arriving fire units observed significant fire coming through the roof. Several explosions were noted, likely from propane tanks on site. The fire had already spread rapidly throughout the building, causing significant structural damages and challenges in suppressing the fire. The fire was contained and extinguished preventing it from fully spreading to the remainder of the structure.
There were no injuries or fatalities, as the building was currently unoccupied.

One person is injured after a shooting that occurred in the area of 32nd Street SE and South Division Avenue.
At approximately 10:20 p.m. on Friday, May 10, officers from the Wyoming Police Department responded to the area of 32nd Street SE and South Division Avenue for multiple reports of shots being fired. During the investigation, a male shooting victim was located.
The male, an 18-year-old Wyoming resident, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to an area hospital for treatment. Suspect information is not available at this time.

One person is dead after a crash on 54th Street SW over US-131.
At approximately 2:30 p.m. on April 14, police and fire personnel from the Wyoming Department of Public Safety responded to 54th Street SW over US-131 on the report of a single-vehicle rollover crash. The driver and sole occupant of the vehicle died at the scene.
The cause of the crash is currently under investigation.
54th Street over US-131 will be closed in both directions while Wyoming Police Accident Investigation and Forensic Science Units investigate this incident.

One person is in custody following a bank robbery that occurred at the Fifth Third Bank at 2828 Michael Ave SW.
At approximately 9 a.m. on March 22, officers from the Wyoming Department of Public Safety responded to the Fifth Third Bank on Michael Avenue on the report of a bank robbery that just occurred.
A suspect entered the business and approached a teller. The suspect demanded money from the teller and implied he had a weapon. An undisclosed amount of cash was obtained by the suspect who then left the bank. As officers were searching the area for the suspect, an officer located a person matching the suspect description on 28th Street SW, between Buchanan Avenue SW and South Division Avenue. The suspect, a 65-year-old male, was taken into custody without incident and lodged at the Kent County Jail. The suspect’s identity is not being released pending arraignment.

Wyoming Police have arrested a male suspect, a 20-year-old Wyoming resident, in connection with this shooting; the suspect’s name and charges are being withheld pending arraignment.
The victim, a 36-year-old male resident of Grand Rapids, is an employee of the business; he sustained severe injuries and is in critical condition.

At approximately 7:00 a.m. on Jan. 25, the Wyoming Fire Department responded to a residential house fire in the 3500 block of Bluebird Avenue SW.
The first arriving fire units observed smoke coming from the home and they made entry. Firefighters quickly contained and extinguished the fire preventing it from fully spreading to the remainder of the structure.
Everyone was able to safely evacuate the home and there were no reported injuries to persons or pets.
The Wyoming Fire Department was notified of this fire emergency through the quick actions of homeowners who called 911. The Wyoming Fire Department received mutual aid from the Grandville Fire Department.

Wyoming Police seek assistance from the public in providing any information regarding the shooting death of Kane Coronado.
On November 1st, 2022, Kane Coronado was shot and killed while riding his bicycle in the 2200 block of Indian Mounds Drive Southwest.
In the year that has followed, investigators have followed up on numerous tips and leads for this case. Despite investigators’ best efforts, this case remains unsolved.
The suspect in this case was described as a white male who is approximately 30 years old and has a medium build. At the time of this incident, he was described as having a thin, “scruffy” beard and sunken cheeks.

This individual fled the scene, driving northeast on Indian Mounds Drive in a 2000 to 2005 gray or silver sedan, similar to a Chevrolet Cavalier. It should be noted that the suspect may no longer be driving this vehicle.

Wyoming Police detectives are seeking additional information regarding Kane Coronado’s homicide that occurred on Nov. 1, 2022.
A press conference will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 1, 2023 at the Wyoming Police Department.
Wyoming Police Department detectives will provide updates and seek more information regarding Kane Coronado’s homicide along Indian Mounds Drive in 2022.
A representative from Silent Observer will also participate and provide information about a reward and how to submit tips anonymously.
One person is dead and three injured after a crash in the 1700 block of Chicago Drive SW.
At approximately 7:20 a.m. on Oct. 23, police and fire personnel from the Wyoming Department of Public Safety responded to the 1700 block of Chicago Dr. SW on a report of a head-on collision. Upon arrival officers located multiple subjects with injuries. Initial investigation indicates both vehicles were traveling on Chicago Drive, one eastbound and the other westbound.
The eastbound driver, a 43-year-old male from the City of Wyoming, died as a result of injuries sustained from the crash. Three occupants of the westbound vehicle were taken to area hospitals for treatment.
The Wyoming Police Accident Investigation and Forensic Science Units continue to investigate this incident.

The Wyoming Police Department responded to shooting events on Friday, Sept. 8 and Saturday, Sept. 9 that left two people injured and one person dead.
A shooting that left one person injured in the 3800 block of South Division Ave on Sept. 8 is being investigated by the WPD.
At approximately 9:15 p.m. on Sept. 8, 2023, police and fire personnel from the Wyoming Department of Public Safety responded to the 3800 block of South Division Ave on a report of a person shot. When officers arrived, they located a 53-year-old male Grand Rapids area resident suffering from a gunshot wound. The male was treated by medical personnel on scene and transported to an area hospital in serious condition.

When officers arrived, they located two juvenile male Wyoming residents suffering from gunshot wounds.
One male was treated by medical personnel on scene and transported to an area hospital in serious condition. The other juvenile is deceased.
Individuals involved in this incident have been located and interviewed by investigators.

The Grand Rapids Public Museum (GRPM)’s Saturday Investigation Classes will return during the month of March 2023, allowing curious minds to immerse themselves in exciting and educational labs and activities led by Museum educators.
Visitors aged 8 and older are encouraged to sign up for these small-group, hands-on educational classes to investigate history, science, and culture. Saturday Investigations transform the Museum into a learning lab, giving the public an exclusive experience through behind-the-scenes exhibit exploration, artifact investigation, engaging activities, and more. This experience is great for younger children to attend with their parents or guardians to work together, or for older kids to attend on their own.
Classes will take place on Saturdays from March 4 – 25 from 10:15 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the GRPM. The registration cost for Saturday Investigations is just $2 with the purchase of a general admission ticket or $7 to attend the class only. On Aug. 31, the Wyoming Department of Public Safety announced it is conducting a homicide investigation in the 1500 block of 44th Street.
On Aug. 30, detectives from Wyoming Public safety and Kent County Sheriff’s Department served a search warrant at an apartment belonging to Yenly Garcia and located a female deceased from a gunshot wound. The female has been identified as Mollie Schmidt who was reported missing to Kent County Sheriff’s Department last week.
Detectives are investing this case as a homicide and are pursuing all leads .Garcia is a person of interest in this case. Garcia is 44-years-old, 5-foot, 10 inches tall, 200 pounds with dark hair and distinct tattoos on his face. Garcia was last known to be driving a black 2019 Dodge Ram 1500 pickup with a Michigan plate of ELW6780. Garcia’s current whereabouts are unknown. Garcia current has an active warrant out for his arrest on an unrelated charge.

The Wyoming Police are seeing information on an assault that took place in the 4400 block of Herman Avenue on Aug. 23 at around 12:30 a.m.
The incident, according to police, stemmed from an altercation involving four individuals who were known to each other and resulted in all four of them receiving injuries requiring medical treatment at a local hospital. According to police, the injuries were sustained from being stabbed or assaulted with a blunt object. One of these individuals sustained life-threatening injuries and is in critical condition at a local hospital. One individual has been traded and released, one has been treated and then lodged at Kent County Correctional Facility on charges related to this incident, and one remains hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.
The investigation is ongoing, and detectives are working to determine the role of each person involved in the incident. The individual who was lodged at Kent County Correctional Facility will be held pending review of changes by the Kent County prosecutor.
