Muskegon Museum of Art highlights 100+ years of collecting in current exhibit

The Muskegon Museum of Art has reopened with “Shaping the Future, Celebrating the Past,” an exhibition that highlights and explores the various facets of its internationally recognized permanent collection in all of its galleries through the summer and fall of 2020. Each gallery in the museum features a different theme with displays of works representing various facets of the collection. Visitors will see the MMA’s most recognized masterworks along with more rarely seen objects that define over 100 years of collecting, begun in 1910.

The Shows

“GLASS: Treasures from the Permanent Collection” anchors the Shaping the Future, Celebrating the Past exhibition with a dramatic and colorful display of the MMA’s decade-spanning collection of studio glass in L.C. and Margaret Walker Gallery. Works by many of the artists that defined the studio glass movement, including Dale Chihuly, Harvey Littleton, and Marvin Lipofsky, join works made by today’s new masters. Collections of vintage Tiffany and Steuben lamps and glasswork and pieces from the pioneering days of contemporary studio glass give visitors a glimpse into the changing technologies and interests that have shaped the glass movement. GLASS also celebrates the legacy of C. Corcoran “Corky” Tuttle and her husband Robert Tuttle, who introduced the museum and its supporters to studio glass and helped guide collecting. Through Corky, the MMA has hosted internationally recognized glass artists Dante Marioni, Stephen Rolfe Powell, Benjamin Moore, Debora Moore, Sonja Blomdahl, Nancy Callan, and many others represented by our collection and featured in this show.

“Pictures of the Best Kind” presents the MMA’s most recognized and renowned treasures in the Bettye Clark Cannon Gallery to showcase the strengths of the museum’s past and the ongoing acquisitions that build upon its legacy and shape its future. Since 1905, through funds donated by Charles H. Hackley and the gifts of benefactors that followed him, the museum has acquired works of art by contemporary and historic artists alike, bringing to West Michigan a wide array of artistic expression. Visitors will see artworks by famed artists such as Edward Hopper, John Steuart Curry, Henry Ossawa Tanner, Winslow Homer, James A. M. Whistler, Robert Henri, Reginald Marsh, Arthur B. Davies, John Sloan, Roger Brown, Elizabeth Catlett, Deborah Butterfield, and Hughie Lee-Smith.

“From Dürer to Rembrandt: Five Centuries of Art and Faith,” in the Theodore and Joan Operhall Gallery, displays works from the earliest days of printmaking in 15th-century Germany and 17th-century Holland that chronicle the significant influence of faith on the advancement of art. Prints by luminaries such as Albrecht Dürer, Martin Schongauer, Hendrik Goltzius, and Rembrandt are on display, along with Lucas Cranach the Elder’s portraits of Martin Luther and Katharina Van Bora and Joos van Cleve’s 16th-century St. Jerome in Penitence. Paintings by Dutch, German, and Swedish artists inspired by these traditions, portraying both secular and religious subject matter, are also on display.

“Graphic: 19th- and 20th-Century Prints and Watercolors” highlights some of the best works from the MMA’s extensive holdings of works on paper in the Theodore and Joan Operhall Gallery. This exhibition features the works of important artists and provides our guests with an overview of the history and innovations that characterize the field of printmaking from its golden age in late 19th- and early 20th-century Europe to the etchings, lithographs, woodcuts, and screen prints of today. Prints include those by Pablo Picasso, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, John Steuart Curry, Françoise Gilot, Alexander Calder, John Sloan, Isabel Bishop, and Mary Cassatt. Watercolors by Thomas Hart Benton and Charles Burchfield as well as those of contemporary Michigan and Midwest artists are also on display.

“The Artist’s Lens: 20th- and 21st-Century Photography,” in the Alcoa Foundation/Ernest and Marjorie Cooper Gallery, shows the important role photography has played in the MMA’s exhibition and collecting history. A selection of images that define the photography holdings are displayed, including pieces from the 1946 Muskegon Camera Club collection, iconic prints from renowned photographers, modern West Michigan subjects, and the works of contemporary artists from around the U.S. A selection of prints and ephemera from Edward Curtis’s photographic masterpiece The North American Indian is also featured.

“The Arts of Japan,” in L.C. and Margaret Walker Gallery B, features pieces from our historic and modern Japanese print collection and examples of Japanese ceramics and highlights from the George Hilt Collection of Sumida ware, a rare group of objects made in pre-WWII Japan. World traveling residents of early 20th-century Muskegon returned from their journeys with art from around the world, most notably fine decorative objects from Japan and China. These pieces made their way into the museum’s collection, inspiring an interest in Japanese woodblock prints. In addition to a collection of vintage prints by masters such as Utagawa Hiroshige, Yasuo Kuniyoshi, and Utagawa Kunisada begun in the 1920s, the museum has acquired, by gift and purchase, prints by modern and contemporary Japanese artists.

“A Living Legacy: Modern and Contemporary Art,” in the Michael and Kay Olthoff/Thelma and Paul Wiener Gallery, highlights the MMA’s ongoing commitment to display and purchase work by living artists. The featured paintings and sculpture showcase a wide range of styles and inspirations, from abstraction to contemporary realism. Senior Curator Art Martin comments, “In continuing to collect contemporary pieces, the MMA is an active participant in an international conversation about art and art making, bringing new perspectives and voices to our audiences and keeping a living record of what moves and informs us as a culture.”

Just the words, “world travel” sound romantic. What’s it like to really chuck it all and travel around the world for a year? After visiting over a dozen countries on a shoestring-budget, I thought I’d do a little visual re-cap of some of the highlights.

 

First stop on my world travel adventure — Australia, including the Great Barrier Reef in Cairns, where I took a leap of faith as well as a leap in the ocean, and later frolicked with rock wallabies, felt the spiritual draw of Uluru, soaked up the sun on Sydney’s beaches and toured the famous opera house. From the capitol, Canberra, to Melbourne to Tasmania, I not only explored all the scenic beauty Australia has to offer, but the beauty and hospitality of the people as well, couch surfing with wonderful souls who opened their homes to me (too many on this journey to name in one blog).

 

Sad to leave the land of Oz, I was at the same time excited to check out the natural beauty of New Zealand’s South Island, from fjords to waterfalls, helicopters and glaciers and swimming with dolphins — to tracks and tramping to wine. It was sensory-overload in every aspect.

 

After all that adventure, it was time to slow down with a 10-day silent meditation retreat in Thailand, focusing on breathing and letting thoughts float by (world travel isn’t all about constantly moving). Other treats lay in store in Thailand as well, like cooking class, night market shopping and even swimming with elephants.

 

From there, a swing through Cambodia to watch the sun rise over Angkor Wat, the largest temple complex in the world and with the help of a generous friend, to buy a tuk tuk for a young man struggling to start his own business.

 

Japan has long been on my list, and exceeded any dreams of what this locale would bring. From the bustle of Tokyo, to a ryokan in cherry blossom-filled mountains near snow monkeys soaking in hot springs — to historic, temple and shrine-filled Kyoto and out to the hush of Arashiyama’s bamboo-forest, Japan was a feast for the senses.

 

As hard as it was leaving Japan, Croatia was calling, with historic cities like Dubrovnik, Split, Zagreb, and Zadar — crystalline waters of National Parks Plitvice and Krka, and scenic islands to hop — Mljet, Korcula, Brac, Hvar, and hundreds more, all set like gems in the vast blue ocean, the colors of which are hard to describe. I even managed to slip in a day trip to Montenegro.

 

Farewell, Croatia meant hello, Slovenia and fairytale Bled, with its island and church and jade-colored lake — and of course, what fairytale would be complete without castle, knights and dancing ladies?

 

Only thoughts of Italy, Venice and gelato, could pry me away from Slovenia. Who can resist singing gondoliers, carnival masks, bridge-stitched canals and Italian wine? Italy also brought the Amalfi coast, Isle of Capri, historic Pompeii, Rome and the Cinque Terra.

 

France included not only couch surfing in Paris and tangoing in front of the Eiffel Tower, but a free private tour on the top of Notre Dame amidst a city full of art and architecture. Loire Valley is filled with castles and I managed to explore several, including Chenonceau, Villandry, Cheverny, and Chambord. Although I didn’t meet a prince, I did get rescued by a fairy godmother, but that’s another story.

 

In the South of France, amidst fields of sunflowers, I sat for a couple of weeks. My first housesit for two little poodles (and a lazy tortoise) gave me use of my own private pool. Spain also lay waiting on my world travels — beautiful Barcelona, infused with the influence of Gaudi, including Parc Guell and Sagrada Familia, and tapas and flamenco rounded out the experience.

 

After months of sun and following summer, it was time to head someplace cool, so I hopped a flight to the emerald isle of Ireland where for a few days in Dublin, I discovered the joys of craic (Irish fun, including music and liquid refreshment) and was even turned temporarily into a leprechaun. Renting a car was the only way to get around on the backroads, so I headed off on the Wild Atlantic Way, through fields of green in every shade, along coast, past grazing sheep, through rainbow villages and castles and Celtic ruins.

 

In time for my second housesit, I flew to Scotland, where first I sampled the magnificent city of Edinburgh, then headed to Fort William to care for a feisty border collie and hike the highlands, while housesitting in a Victorian manse on a hill overlooking a loch.

 

From one dog sit to another to another, I was dropped into Dickens, in a little village called Corsham, where I walked much more slowly with my 15-year-old charge and also fed a visiting peacock named Kevin. A day to cruise through Bath led to four days in lovely London, full of museums, parks and markets.

 

Rounding out my year of world travel was yet another dog sit in Hove in the south of England, for two lively little dachshunds and walks on Brighton’s promenade. All in all, it was an amazing journey — this just scratches the surface.

 

When my year was over, not ready to return to the States, I spent six months in Thailand writing about my adventures. I’m now wintering in Mexico!

In Kyoto: Temples and Geishas

This is the sixth installment chronicling the adventures of Lynn Strough, a local artist and writer who’s been traveling the world since November 2014. Lynn’s travels have (so far) taken her to Australia, New Zealand, Thailand, Cambodia, Japan, Slovenia, Croatia, Ireland, England, France, Italy… and I’m sure we’re forgetting a few destinations. Kyoto is a city of contrasts – modern buildings and very old temples, the latest fashions and traditional kimonos. It’s the kind of place I envision when I think of Japan.

 

My first morning in Kyoto, I navigated the train system to get to Fushimi Inari, the temple of 10,000 gates (which should also be called the temple of a million steps). It sits at the base of a mountain with thousands of giant red gates all in a long row snaking upward, which you walk through, following the path past many smaller temples or shrines.

It leads up to a view at the top looking out over Kyoto. It’s about four kilometers and takes about two hours to walk up, and is totally worth the effort, not just for the view, but for the experience of all of the different things to see along the way.

 

The entrance was jam-packed with people, and the usual money-making things like fortune telling in various forms – the sticks in a tube, the place to hang bad fortunes out to dry, and tons and tons of food booths selling mostly things I didn’t recognize.

Many foxes are found in Inari shrines, and Inari is the god of rice. You can purchase a small fox-shaped board and put your own fox face or message on it to leave behind.

From there, I wandered to the Gion area, which is the “old Kyoto” where women dressed in Geisha garb hang out. Some are “real” geishas and many more “pretend” geishas – there are actually kimono rental shops!

 

On my way there I accidentally stumbled upon a park, so I headed through instead of taking the direct map route, and discovered Kennin ji, a Zen temple & garden – what a happy accident! I’d been trying to find what I thought was a Zen temple on the map this morning, with no luck, and here I found one when I wasn’t looking!

 

It was beautiful, with a rock garden raked in circles and swirling lines, lovely rooms with tatami mats and square green cushions, and amazing paintings. Girls dressed like geishas posed for photographers, and a couple of them took a selfie with me.

Also while not looking, I ran into a dance show venue where tickets were about to go on sale, and someone was handing out sheets for a discount, another happy accident. The show included a bit of traditional music, flower arranging, tea ceremony, comedy play, Kyoto dance, and puppet theater. It was a bit touristy but still worth seeing.

 

16Gion at night is a sight to behold. In Kyoto, you can also visit Nijo Castle and visit the Golden Pavillion, Kinkakuji.

 

You can visit amazing ceramics shops and a gallery where 102 different artists works are displayed, all tea ceremony related, contemporary as well as traditional, and shop in places that just sell Japanese fans…

 

You can attend a Japanese tea ceremony, where they will show you all of the intricacies involved. It’s quite fascinating, full of way too many details for me to remember. But then it’s also sort of meditative. Even the tea scoop has a name. This one translated to something like “cherry blossoms that float like snow in spring.”

Later, dinner with a new Swiss friend, Ruth, at a local’s joint, sitting at the bar eating dumplings and beer. A great way to end the day.

 

Even without your own kimono and tea bowl, you can have a lovely time in the beautiful Japanese city of Kyoto!
