Kentwood to host Fourth Annual Flashlight Yeti Hunt on Friday, Jan. 26

The City of Kentwood needs help finding the yeti again on Friday, Jan. 26 – and this year, he brought along some friends.

The fourth annual Flashlight Yeti Hunt will take place from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Covenant Park, 3724 Shaffer Ave. SE. Participants will use flashlights to search for clues leading to the yeti – also known as the abominable snowman – and his two friends along a mile-long walking path.

“We’re excited to host the Flashlight Yeti Hunt again this year,” said Val Romeo, Parks and Recreation director. “This is a great opportunity for community members of all ages to come together for some winter fun. We look forward to seeing who can find the yeti and his friends first.”

The event will end at the park’s clubhouse, where participants can enjoy warm drinks, light refreshments and a chance for a photo with the yeti.

General admission is $7 per household, and participants are asked to bring their own flashlight.

It’s good ‘vibe’-rations as Kentwood hosts third annual parks and rec gala

Community members and friends are invited to attend The Vibe, a Parks and Recreation gala benefiting Kentwood’s Adaptive Sports programs, which provide recreation opportunities for individuals with disabilities.

 

Now in its third year, The Vibe will highlight the City’s adaptive water ski program – a one-of- kind program in Michigan that offers lessons and clinics for youth and adults with physical and developmental disabilities. All proceeds raised will be used to purchase a new ski boat to benefit the program.

The celebration will take place on Friday, May 18 from 6-10 p.m. at Stonewater Country Club, located at 7177 Kalamazoo Avenue SE in Caledonia. Featured speakers will include Katelyn Bush, Susie Kluting and Pam Buschle, who will share how Kentwood’s adaptive recreation programs have impacted their lives.

 

“The Vibe Gala is the perfect opportunity to connect with friends and colleagues in an upbeat environment while supporting recreation access to all in West Michigan” said Val Romeo, Kentwood Parks and Recreation director. “Our keynote speakers are three incredible women who have impactful stories to tell that underscore the importance of inclusive recreational opportunities. We welcome the community to join us for this remarkable event and to support our adaptive sports program.”

 

Bush is a certified therapeutic recreation specialist who has worked with Kentwood Parks and Recreation for the past three years. During a routine ultrasound in 2017, Bush and her husband discovered their daughter had a birth defect called myelomeningocele, the most severe form of spina bifida. While she has worked with children who have this diagnosis previously, Bush now navigates the maze of parenthood with a child who has a disability.

 

Susie Kluting

Kluting has played sled hockey for the Grand Rapids Sled Wings for more than 10 years, with sights on the U.S. Paralympic Team. Born with spina bifida, Kluting was introduced to sled hockey through Mary Free Bed’s Adaptive Sports program. She now uses her experience and expertise on to support, educate and empower children with disabilities and their families.

 

Buschle, a social worker at Kentwood Elementary Schools, developed a severe form of sepsis in 2013, forcing her medical team to amputate all four of her limbs to increase her chances of survival. Buschle uses prosthetics to live her life with joy, hope and purpose.

 

The evening will include dinner, dancing and a silent auction. The auction will feature items such as four passes to Action Wake Park, aVIP tour and tasting for six adults at Chateau Chantel, a one night stay and restaurant credit at Little River Casino, two adult round trip ferry tickets for Beaver Island Boat Company, and more. The auction will also feature sports memorabilia, golf packages, jewelry, and museum passes among other things.

Kentwood parks and rec Craft Beer 101 program starts this week

It is not too late to fill your Monday calendar with a little beer (education) as the Kentwood Parks and Recreation Department beings four weeks of its Craft Beer 101 adult education program Monday, Jan. 23, with a program at Jaden James Brewery.

 

The program — continuing on Monday evenings from 6-8 p.m. on Jan. 30 and Feb. 6 and 13 — is for people 21-years-old and older who want to learn more about what goes into beer, how beer is made and the various kinds of beer, according to supplied information. The class will include tasting.

 

The classes are led by Ben Darcie, founder of Experience Beer WM and a beer writer, educator and self-proclaimed “beer geek extraordinaire.” The classes are for the beginner as well as the advanced home-brewer.

 

The program at Jaden James Brewery, located at 4665 Broadmoor Ave. SE, is called “Intro: Beer Ingredients and Process” The other classes, in order of date, are “Beer Tasting: Lager, Pale Ale & IPA; Hops and Brewing Them” at Schmohz, 2600 Patterson SE; “Beer Tasting: Belgian, Porter and Stout; Alternative Yeast and Recipe Design” at Railton Brewing, 3555 68the St. SE; and “Infection and Off-flavor” at Horrock’s Market at 4455 Breton SE.

Santa Comes to You at the Drive-Thru

Cars full of kids made their way to the Kentwood Activities Center this past Friday night. It was chilly, but the weather was clear of any wet particles falling from the sky, and everyone was bundled up as needed for a brand new event held by the Kentwood Parks and Recreation Department. Instead of the children and their families hustling out of the vehicles and darting towards the activity center, they stayed in the car as the event was brought to them.

How often does Santa take the time to meet with you from the warmth of your own car on a cool December evening? Since we know all about his vehicle of choice (a sleigh) and the horse…er… deer power that pulls it from chimney to chimney, Santa decided to take an interest in the cars of the citizens of Kentwood. The big man greeted all those willing to see him with a HO HO HO!

However, Santa wasn’t the only one eager to meet new people, everyone’s favorite snowman Olaf was there as well. Yes, I would like to build a snowman!

In the end, over 100 kids experienced a new way to interact with Santa. It was one more time for the children to share their Christmas wishes with Santa and also make mention of their yearlong good behavior. No coal for anybody this Christmas![huge_it_slider id=”23″]

Drive-Thru Santa from the Comfort of your Car

Drive-Thru SantaTechnology makes everyday life go faster. Automobiles and airplanes allow us to travel much quicker than horses and boats, the internet keeps us up to date on daily events at the drop of a hat, and cell phones allow communication to flow quickly and effortlessly. The need for speed creeps into all aspects of everyday life, including visiting Santa.

Wait a minute, visiting Santa?

Here comes Drive-Thru Santa Claus, an event put on by the Kentwood Parks and Recreation Department. Visitors have the opportunity to drive to the “North Pole” and get a picture taken with Santa from the comfort of their own car! From there you can talk to Santa, take a selfie, and then drive safely out of the lot and on your merry way.

A new tradition bound to make a quick, effortless, and unique Christmas experience.

If the idea of a Drive-Thru Santa piques your interest, make sure to stop by the Kentwood Activities Center from 6-8pm on Friday, December 11. The cost is $3 per car, cash only, and the last car will be admitted at 7:45pm.

Santa takes time out of his busy day to fly his sleigh to your house on Christmas, the least you can do is drive your car to see him. Make sure to bring your selfie stick!

Trunk-or-Treat gets accessorized with the Fall Festival (Note: Location Change!)

Trick-or-Treating is an annual tradition around the nation on Halloween, but the City of Kentwood adds a little twist, instead of going door-to-door, the children go trunk-to-trunk. Why trick-or-treat when you can just as easily trunk-or-treat?

Trunk-or-Treat has become a holiday staple for the Kentwood Parks and Rec Department. It gives children an opportunity to dress up in their favorite costumes and trick-or-treat in a safe environment. The event is also a chance for those children who don’t live in neighborhoods to have a neighborhood brought to them!

This year, with a whole new staff running the event, the Kentwood Parks and Rec Department decided to add a little more fun to Trunk-or-Treat. Don’t think of it as a face-lift or a makeover, it’s more along the lines of accessorizing.

“We are excited about the new addition of the Fall Festival in conjunction with the Trunk or Treat event!” explained Lorraine Beloncis of the Kentwood Parks and Rec Department, “We’ve added hayrides, games, a bouncy house, music, cider & donuts and face painting along with our sponsored trunks handing out candy.”

TrunkorTreatThe addition of the Fall Festival should only add more smiles to a fun-filled day that families and children of all ages can enjoy. On top of all the fun events previously mentioned, there will be pumpkin racing, Halloween Plinko, and pumpkin ring toss.

Oh! I almost failed to mention, the children aren’t the only ones who get to dress up and show off their creative side. It’s encouraged for all participants to decorate and vote on their trunks as well!

Don’t miss out on all the fun of the Fall Festival! This years event is Saturday, October 24 from 10am-noon. Because of the weather, Fall Festival has been moved from its original location at Veteran’s Park to the Garage at Kentwood’s Public Works Department. The address is 5068 Breton Road, between 44th and 52nd Street.
