Area’s first outdoor concert series along with John Ball Zoo announce start dates

Spring is marching in as two popular summer activities, the John Ball Zoo and the area’s oldest outdoor free concert series, announce opening dates.

This past week, John Ball Zoo announced it would officially open March 25 for its 2022 season and will feature the “Washed Ashore” collection. Turning discarded plastics found on the beach into beautiful pieces of art, “Washed Ashore” artists create large powerful sculptures that captivate all ages and teach environmental conservation and sustainability.

Tickets for the zoo are available online, www.jbzoo.org/visitandtickets, or at the zoo. Admission tickets are on sale now for opening day, March 25, through April. Lowell Showboat Sizzlin’ Summer Concerts

The area’s oldest outdoor concert seres, the Lowell Showboat Sizzlin’ Summer Concerts, marks its 20th anniversary this season. the Lowell concerts are offered with the Lowell Showboat as a backdrop, commemorating the history of the showboat for the City of Lowell.

 

To commemorate the series’ history, this year’s concerts feature many groups who originated in Michigan and are now heading nationally and internationally.

Groups scheduled to perform are Mungion, The Acidentals, Stone Street Revival, Kari Lynch Band, The Adams Family Band, and the Grand Rapids Sweet Adelines with the Great Lakes Chorus.

The series runs June 16 to Aug. 25. Thursday evening concerts begin at 7 p.m. along the Flat River, 113 Riverwalk Plaza, in downtown Lowell.

 

Food and spirts are available for purchase. Admission to the concerts and parking are free. the concerts draw upwards of 1,000 visitors each week. The concert venue is wheelchair accessible. Bleacher seating is available or attendees can bring their own folding chair.

Line-up for Lowell’s Sizzlin’ Showboat 2020 Concert series announced

Gunnar and the Grizzly Boys kick off the Lowell Showboat Sizzlin’ Summer Concert series.

Local country favorite Gunnar and the Grizzly Boys will be kicking off the popular 2020 Lowell Showboat Sizzlin’ Summer Concert series on June 11.

The series, presented by the LowellArts and the Lowell Area Chamber of Commerce, runs for 11 weeks from June 11 to Aug. 20. The series, designed to bring talent to the riverfront stage in downtown Lowell, features 11 local and regional performers. The program is a free, family-friendly outdoor concert on the Riverwalk Plaza each Thursday, all summer long.

The line up for the series is:


June 11 – Gunnar and the Grizzly Boys

June 18 – Nicholas James and the Bandwagon

June 25 – Soul Access

July 2 – Sam’s Swing Band

July 9 – Soul Syndicate

July 10 – Conestoga (Riverwalk Friday)

July 30 – Midnight Madcat Blues Journey

Lowell Showboat Sizzlin’ Summer Concerts outdoor concert series runs June 15 to August 25, 2017. Thursday evening concerts begin at 7 p.m. in front of the Flat River, 113 Riverwalk Plaza, in downtown Lowell, Mich. Food and spirits are available; admission to the concerts and parking are free.

The concerts promote the best of the region’s talented musicians, featuring music groups exclusively from Michigan. A diverse mix of music including Blues, World Music, Roots, Rock, Swing, Big Band, Jazz, Country, Americana, Folk, Indie, Funk, R&B and more draw upwards of 1,000 visitors each week. The concert venue is wheelchair-accessible; bleacher seating is available or attendees may bring their own folding chair.

The concerts are presented by LowellArts and the Lowell Area Chamber of Commerce.

Here’s the lineup:

June 15 – Harper & The Midwest Kind – Blues, World Music, Roots
Borrowing from Western and Aboriginal music, an original take on the roots genre labeled “World Blues”.

June 22 – Brena – Rock, Motown. Features horns, violin, keyboard, electric and acoustic guitar and vocal harmony.

June 29 – Rhythm Section Jazz Band – Swing, Big Band, Jazz
“Little Big Band” consisting of alto sax, tenor sax, trombone, trumpet, piano, guitar, bass, drums, and vocals.

July 6 – Gunnar & the Grizzly Boys – Country, Rock, Americana
Honest storytelling and music that explodes into the audience like an electrifying dose of adrenaline.

July 7 (Friday) – The Bronk Bros. – Country, Southern Rock, Americana. Combines impressive vocals, remarkable guitar playing, rocking harmonica, and crowd-engaging stage energy.

July 13 – The Steve Hilger Band – Blues. Progressive blues mixed with traditional blues music, come out for an exciting blend of smokin’ hot blues!

July 20 – Lindsay Lou & the Flatbellys – Americana
Eclectic Bluegrass band with distinct vocals, tight harmonies, instrumental expertise and creative arrangements.

July 23 (Sunday at 3 p.m.) – 126 Army Band, “The Governor’s Own” – Military Ensemble – Grand Rapids based citizen-soldiers, the band has been providing music for the nation since 1857.

July 27 – The Natchez Trace – Country, Rock. Award-winning group, celebrating 30 years, kickin’ instrumentation and tight 4-part harmony.

August 3 – The Ragbirds – Folk, World Music. A fusion of folk rock and pop hooks over danceable world rhythms stirred with a Celtic fiddler’s bow.

August 17 – Olivia Mainville & the Aquatic Troupe – Folk, Gypsy Swing, Indie. Known for energized, dynamic performances and gargantuan musical talent.

August 24 – The Hip Pocket – Funk, R&B Band. High energy R&B, with cutting edge horn arrangements and exceptional musicianship.

August 25 (Friday at 6 p.m.) – Rockin’ for the Showboat. Alive & Well, The Adams Family, Josh Rose, The Preservers, Time Hungry, The Upstage Crew Blues Band – Regional and local bands joining forces to raise money and help rebuild a Lowell community icon.
