The airport is alive with music

Several Wyoming and Kentwood high school choirs will be performing at the Gerald R. Ford International Airport’s Holiday Music Festival, which is Dec. 3 – 7. Some of the groups scheduled are Potters House, Legacy Christian, South Christian, Wyoming High School, Lee High School, and East Kentwood High School. Performances are daily from 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. andJe are free.

And the winner is…

Jennifer Lewis and Brian Jirous were declared the newest members of the Wyoming Board of Education this week. Both ran in the Nov. 6 election. Jirous was the only candidate who filed for one of the two open seats on the board. Lewis was one of two write-in candidates. It took a couple of weeks for the write-ins to be hand counted, according to school officials. The two will be sworn in at the Wyoming Board of Education meeting set for Jan. 14 at 6 p.m.

Santa is coming to town

While it is still a week yet until Kentwood hosts its annual tree lighting and parade, set for Dec. 7, and the Wyoming Kentwood Area Chamber of Commerce hosts the Santa Parade, Dec. 8, you can get your celebrating started at Byron Center’s community festivities this Saturday, Dec. 1. The parade portion has been cancelled due to the weather but the chili dinner and holiday concert at Pathway Church, 8350 Byron Center Ave. SW, is still taking place.

Light It Up

Ever wonder how many lights you can fit on a Christmas tree? Well a group in Belgium did, managing to get 194,672 lights on a real tree on Dec. 10, 2010. Seven years later, Universal Studios Japan was not about to be out done, so they managed to place 570,546 lights on an artificial tree. You have to admit, that is a lot of lights. (Source)

Grand Rapids Public Museum adds two new shows to the line up at the Chaffee Planetarium this fall

The Grand Rapids Public Museum (GRPM) will launch two brand new shows at the Chaffee Planetarium this month Sesame Street’s One World, One Sky and Friday Mediation.

One World, One Sky will thrill young audience members when they find themselves on Sesame Street with their famous friends, Big Bird and Elmo. The fun begins when Elmo’s friend, Hu Hu Zhu, visits from China and the three of them take the audience on an exciting journey of discovery to learn about the sun, stars, and Big Dipper. Elmo and Hu Hu Zhu blast off on an imaginary trip to the moon and when they return home to Earth everyone discovers that, no matter where we live, we all share the same sky.

One World, One Sky will begin showings on Saturday, Sept. 16. Tickets may be purchased at the Museum’s front desk. Show times can be found by visiting grpm.org.

Friday Meditation is a new experience being offered in the Chaffee Planetarium on Friday’s in conjunction with the Museum’s traveling exhibition, Brain: The World Inside Your Head. Visitors to Friday Mediation will first learn about the brain, what effects stress has on the brain and tools for mindfulness. Then, the experience will take visitors on a deep relaxation exercise where they marvel at beautiful scenery on the planetarium dome, while relaxing and mediating at the same time.

The experience will be offered during the lunch hour on Fridays starting on Friday, Sept. 22 and continuing through the exhibitions closing in early January 2018.

Planetarium Shows are $4 with general admission and $5 for planetarium only. Museum members receive free admission to planetarium shows.

Sonia Manzano: “Sesame Street” Pioneer

Growing up Puerto Rican in the South Bronx of the 1950s and 60s was tough. Poverty, alcoholism, domestic violence, and being the “invisible minority” were daily occurrences. Yet, Sonia Manzano found her refuge in the performing arts, and the young dancer was poised to accept the job of a lifetime when the Children’s Television Workshop cast her as Maria on the now-acclaimed Sesame Street children’s program. After four decades of performing on PBS, author Manzano reflects on the importance of children of color seeing themselves represented in the media–both on the stage and behind the camera.

Alan Headbloom hosts Feel Like You Belong, a show filmed at WKTV that is focused on sharing the life stories of immigrants, expatriates, and refugees to the United States.
