Back-to-back titles for South Christian soccer this fall?

By Cris Greer, WKTV Managing Editor

It has been a roller-coaster ride of emotions for South Christian incoming senior Sam Bos and his soccer teammates the past few years.

In 2019, the Sailors lost to Grosse Ile 2-1 in a shootout in the Division 3 state championship game and then lost 1-0 in the 2020 finals to Grosse Ile as well.

“One of the worst feelings”

“Watching my brother Reese lose in the state finals and then losing myself was one of the worst feelings,” said Bos, who was a freshman when South Christian lost 2-1 in the finals. “Getting so close to winning a state championship and then losing in a pk shootout 1-0 was heartbreaking.”

And then, “A dream come true”

All that heartbreak quickly faded after the Sailors knocked off Grosse Ile 3-1 last fall in the state final, making it four titles since 2010, and finishing undefeated at 22-0-3 for the season.

“I personally was full of joy to finally win a state championship and couldn’t stop smiling for the next couple of days,” said Bos, who calls cheeseburgers and Oreo ice cream his favorite foods. “It was definitely a top moment of my high school memories so far.

“As a team, to score three goals was huge for us. With a new coaching staff, we had a blank slate and nothing to lose which gave us the courage to finally defeat Gross Ile.”

That new coach, Joel Vande Kopple, said he knew it was a special moment for the guys that lost to Grosse Ile the previous two years.

“Having lost the previous two years the mental expectations could be heavy,” said Vande Kopple, who previously coached at Lansing Christian for 15 years. “They needed to know that this year was a different year and the result would be different. Getting them to believe in themselves and one another was vital.

“Team-wise, my favorite part was that the group bought into the idea that the collective was more important than the individual. We had a lot of talented players who were very deserving of individual awards, but rather than making that their focus, they decided to put the team first.”

Vande Kopple said Bos is a great disruptive force in the middle of the field.

“He plays a holding mid position and really shields our defensive line well by breaking up attacks, winning 50/50 balls, winning air balls and distributing well to start an attack,” Vande Kopple explained. “In addition, he scored some very important goals for us, most notably in our district final win and our first round of regionals, both of which were game winners against very talented teams.”

His interest in soccer all began at a young age.

“I have played it since I was born,” said Bos, who played AYSO growing up and then moved to club soccer around third grade. “Watching my older brother play soccer helped fuel my interest. Since then, I have always wanted to be the best in my family and that grew to me wanting to be the best on the field.

“Growing up with two brothers (Jerad and Reese) made me very competitive and I wanted to always win.”

Bos said Vande Kopple was a great addition to South Christian and brought amazing energy.

“We couldn’t have asked for a better coach,” said Bos, who also plays varsity basketball. “His passion for coaching soccer is outstanding and you can tell he truly loves the game and wants to win.

“I am looking forward to this upcoming season as we are returning a lot of seniors, but will also have a lot of young talent to hopefully help us go back to back.”

South Christian varsity girls golf ends season 3rd at state in Division 3

At first, the members of the South Christian varsity golf team were not sure if they would have a season. They did and this season has been one for the record books. The team has consistently placed first and second in competitions with a team currently ranked 7th in its class.

Top players have been junior Elle Bolkema and freshmen Ashley Thomasma.

“Both bring a competitive side,” coach Ben Cook said to WKTV. “They push each other and the entire team. They also play a lot of tournament golf in the summer which prepares them well for the season.”

Cook has been coaching golf at South Christian for six seasons. This year there have been many changes, mostly a result of COVID, which almost cancelled the season. Cook said through it all, he tried to keep things fun.

Recently the team placed first in regionals with 336 points and advanced to the State Championships. For the past six seasons they have made it to state and last year they placed 15th.

On Saturday, Oct. 17, the girls attended the Division 3 State Championships hosted at Michigan State University. The team placed third with 330 points and Thomasma was fourth overall on the leaderboard with 75 points.

“I’m very happy with how we played,” Cook said. “It’s our best team score ever.”

Cook noted the team’s goal was to place at least fifth at the championships and they are pleased with their outcome, with him adding “We had great timing and three kids had their personal best.”

Though the season is now over the team says they are not disappointed with their outcome. They look forward to 2021 season and hope to come back stronger than ever before.

40 teams to compete at GVSU in FIRST Robotics event

Teams from 40 West Michigan high schools will compete for robotic supremacy at the annual FIRST Robotics event hosted by Grand Valley State University.

The teams will compete on March 22-23 at Grand Valley’s Fieldhouse Arena in a challenge where they will use the robot that they have designed and built to fill a cargo ship and rocket with elements from space. Teams will race the clock, as well as their opponents, to pick up as much cargo as they can.

Grand Valley students and alumni will volunteer at the event to encourage students to pursue careers in STEM fields.

FIRST Robotics is a unique competition model where students gain real-world experience designing, programming, creating and marketing a robot to win the competition. Many teams work hand-in-hand with industry mentors and gain experience and skills not available in a traditional classroom setting.

The competition will be live-streamed on Twitch: https://www.twitch.tv/firstinmi03

South Christian boys to christen new floor against rival Unity Christian

By Micah Cho, WKTV sports volunteer

ken@wktv.org

After losing to Class A neighbor East Kentwood High School by only six points in the season opener, Class B South Christian put many teams on notice this year that the Sailors are for real.

If they can put away last year’s OK-Green Conference Champion, and local rival Unity Christian, this week they may mark themselves as a team to be contended with this season in the OK-Gold.

When it comes to Friday nights game, South Christian has another reason to be excited — the Sailors will be opening up their new home floor, Located at 7979 Kalamazoo Ave in Gaines Township, to the South Christian community.

And WKTV’s Featured Game coverage crew will be there.

Entering this week’s game with a 2-2 record following an impressive win over Caledonia, Sailors coach Jeff Meengs credits the team’s early success to the defensive side of the ball.

“Defensively, because we have so many seniors, we’ve been pretty good right from the beginning,” said Meengs. “Especially against Holland Christian. We played some really good defense against them.”

Traditionally known as a high-scoring program, however, Meengs hopes his kids can continue working the ball down the court as a team.

“We have a lot of guys who like to score and can score,” said Meengs. “They’re learning how to play together in that context.”

WKTV Featured games are broadcast the night of the contest and then at least once later in the week.

WKTV broadcasts on Wyoming and Kentwood cable channels. On Comcast cable, Channel 25 is the Community Channel, where sports events and other community events are shown; Channel 26 is the Government Channel, where local government meetings and events are shown. On AT&T cable throughout the Grand Rapids area, viewers go to Channel 99, and then are given the choice to watch Wyoming (or Kentwood) Community (Channel 25) or Government (Channel 26) channels.

For complete schedules of programs on WKTV channels, see our Weekly On-air Schedule.

All Featured Games, as well as other high school sports and community events covered by WKTV, are available on-demand within a week of play at wktvondemand.com.

Quote of the Day

"Sing, sing a song,
Make it simple to last your whole life long
Don't worry that it's not good enough for anyone else to hear,
Just sing, sing a song..."
        - "Sing" by Joe Raposo, written for "Sesame Street" in 1971

The airport is alive with music

Several Wyoming and Kentwood high school choirs will be performing at the Gerald R. Ford International Airport’s Holiday Music Festival, which is Dec. 3 – 7. Some of the groups scheduled are Potters House, Legacy Christian, South Christian, Wyoming High School, Lee High School, and East Kentwood High School. Performances are daily  from 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. andJe are free.

And the winner is…

Jennifer Lewis and Brian Jirous were declared the newest members of the Wyoming Board of Education this week. Both ran in the Nov. 6 election. Jirous was the only candidate who filed for one of the two open seats on the board. Lewis was one of two write-in candidates. It took a couple of weeks for the write-ins to be hand counted, according to school officials. The two will be sworn in at the Wyoming Board of Education meeting set for Jan. 14 at 6 p.m.

Santa is coming to town

While it is still a week yet until Kentwood hosts its annual tree lighting and parade, set for Dec. 7, and the Wyoming Kentwood Area Chamber of Commerce hosts the Santa Parade, Dec. 8, you can get your celebrating started at Byron Center’s community festivities this Saturday, Dec. 1. The parade portion has been cancelled due to the weather but  the chili dinner and holiday concert at Pathway Church, 8350 Byron Center Ave. SW, is still taking place.

Fun Fact:

Light It Up

Ever wonder how many lights you can fit on a Christmas tree? Well a group in Belgium did, managing to get 194,672 lights on a real tree on Dec. 10, 2010. Seven years later, Universal Studios Japan was not about to be out done, so they managed to place 570,546 lights on an artificial tree. You have to admit, that is a lot of lights. (Source)

South Christian comes up just short, Tri-Unity Christian preparing for quarterfinals

MHSAABy: Mike DeWitt
Mike.DeWitt@wktv.org

South Christian upended number one ranked, and defending state champion, Detroit Country Day in the semifinals but couldn’t seal the deal the next day. For the second time in three years, the Sailors lost in the state finals.

Tri-Unity Christian took home a regional crown and is three wins away from hoisting another trophy. The Defenders will play in the state quarterfinals tonight.

Girls Recap

Class B – State Finals

Marshall – 51
South Christian – 42

It came down to the final game of the season, the state championship at the Breslin Center in Lansing, Michigan. The Sailors had already toppled Detroit Country Day and looked poised to bring home a championship that eluded them two years ago, and something the program hasn’t won since 1988.

South Christian couldn’t handle Marshall’s press in the first half as the Redhawks forced nine first half turnovers and extended their lead to 10 heading into halftime. That pivotal second quarter ended up being the difference as the Sailors weren’t able to weather the storm.

The Sailors led a valiant comeback behind 13 points, 9 rebound and 9 assists from senior Jennifer DeBoer and 16 points from senior Markayla Vander, but  ultimately came up short as the Redhawks made their free throws down the stretch.

It was a tough end to an otherwise extremely successful season.

Class D – State Quarterfinals

Tri-Unity Christian (19-5) vs. Adrian Lenawee Christian (17-7) – 7:00pm at Coldwater

Tri-Unity Christian enters the state quarterfinals coming off of a 21-point victory over Benton Harbor Countryside. The game was close at halftime but adjustments were made and the Defenders dominated the third quarter 27-6. By the time the clock hit double-zero, all five starters found themselves in double figures.

Adrian Lenawee Christian toppled Morenci by 14 in the regional final and is looking to take that all important next step to the Breslin Center.

Winner will play either Waterford Our Lady or Marine City Cardinal Mooney in the state semifinals at the Breslin Center.

South Christian moves on to State Semifinals, Tri-Unity Christian bows out after historic season

MHSAABy: Mike DeWitt
Mike.DeWitt@wktv.org

The historic season for Tri-Unity Christian is officially in the books after losing in the state quarterfinals. South Christian will make a trip to the Breslin Center this weekend to play for a state championship.

On the boy’s side, Tri-Unity Christian prepares for a regional final game against Benton Harbor Countryside.

Girls Recap

Class B – State Quarterfinals

South Christian – 67
Dearborn Heights Robichaud – 51

South Christian found themselves in a one point game with four minutes to play. It was an uncanny night with top-scorers Markayla Vander and Jennifer DeBoer only registering seven first half points, combined!

Then those final four minutes happened and the Sailors finished on a 16-1 run to put an end to any title hopes the Bulldogs’ might have had. It was part of a huge second half where South Christian scored 21 and 25 points in the third and fourth quarters.

Vander finished with 20 points and DeBoer added 17 of her own. For Vander and DeBoer, it’s their second trip to the state semifinal in three years. South Christian lost in the championship back in 2014.

With the win, South Christian will head to the Breslin Center on Friday night to play defending state champion, and number one ranked, Detroit Country Day.

Class D – State Quarterfinals

Pittsford – 71
Tri-Unity Christian – 30

Tri-Unity Christian ran into a buzzsaw in the quarterfinals. Pittsford used their full court press to hassle Tri-Unity and proved why they are the top-ranked team in the state.

For the Defenders, it was the program’s first taste of the big lights. After winning regionals for the first time in history, Tri-Unity saw what it’s going to take to reach the next level. The team was outrebounded 35-15 and gave away too many second-chance opportunities.

It was a great season for the program and helped pave the path for next year’s team to take the next step.

Boys Preview

Class D – Regional Final

Tri-Unity Christian (18-5) vs. Benton Harbor Countryside (12-3) – 6:30pm at Benton Harbor Countryside

Tri-Unity Christian looks to keep their season alive tonight against Benton Harbor Countryside.

The Cougars of Benton Harbor come in having played only 15 games but carry a 12-3 record. They had a very close call – a 57-55 win – in the regional semifinal against Kalamazoo Pheonix.

The Defenders have held strong all season and look to add a regional title to their successful 2016 campaign.

The winner will face either Morenci or Adrian Lenawee Christian in the State Quarterfinals.

Boys Recap

Class B – Regional Semifinals

Williamston – 57 (OT)
Godwin Heights – 55

Godwin Heights BasketballThe defending Class B State Champions weren’t going to go down easy. In fact, it took an extra stanza to outlast the Wolverines, but Williamston pushed through thanks to a 37 point performance from Riley Lewis.

Trailing by five entering the fourth quarter, Williamston was able to stifle Godwin Height’s potent offense and allow for the overtime period. Leon Redd notched 23 points for the Wolverines, but it wasn’t enough down the stretch.

With the loss, Godwin Heights’ season is in the the books. Over the past three years, the Wolverines have a stunning 71-6 record.

Class D – Regional Semifinals

Tri-Unity Christian – 52
Marcellus Howardsville – 38

After a high-scoring first quarter, Tri-Unity Christian put the clamps down on defense and propelled themselves to the Regional Final. The Defenders found themselves down 19-18 after the first eight minutes due to uncharacteristic defense.

Marcellus Howardsville could only muster 19 points the rest of the way.

Tri-Unity Christian evened out the scoring load with 12 points coming from Willie Otole and 10 each from Javi Cuevas and Braydon Sherrod.

The Defenders will play Benton Harbor Countryside for the Regional Final on Wednesday.

South Christian has only lost two games all season and knows how to close out games. Seniors Jennifer DeBoer and Markayla Vander lead a unit with their eyes on the ultimate prize.

Winner will play either Detroit Mumford or Detroit Country Day in the State Semifinal.

Class D – State Quarterfinals

Tri-Unity Christian (21-4) vs Pittsford (24-0) – 7:00pm at Springport

After capturing their first-ever Regional Title, Tri-Unity Christian prepares for their biggest task yet against No. 1 ranked Pittsford. The Wildcats have beaten their opponents this season by an average margin of almost 45 points.

The Defenders defense has been one of their calling cards all season, the team only gives up 37 points per game. The defense will need to be on point tonight for Tri-Unity to pull the upset.

Winner will face either Waterford Our Lady or Kingston on Thursday in the State Semifinal.

South Christian – 62
Portland – 49

Last season, South Christian found themselves in a precarious position. The team struggled relative to program expectations when they struggled to even make it out of districts. Class D

Tri-Unity Christian – 58

For the first time in school history, Tri-Unity Christian can call themselves Regional Champions! The Defenders were led all season by Sarah Buffum, and this game was no different. Buffum scored 29 points, with most of her damage coming from the free throw line where she went 15 for 23, in the biggest win in program history.

After falling short last season, Tri-Unity Christian came in to 2016 with eyes dead-set on the next round. They now have that chance. The Defenders will play Pittsford on Tuesday.
