Circle Theatre in Grand Rapids celebrates 2024 with their 71st season of Main Stage productions and Summer Concert Series.

Dedicated to enriching the quality of life in West Michigan, Circle Theatre uses an intimate setting and exceptional theatrical arts to educate and entertain.

The only community theatre in West Michigan specializing in summer theatre, the Theatre allows community performers of all ages to hone their craft. The Theatre also provides employment for directors, choreographers, musicians, designers and technicians.

Circle Theatre boasts more than 300 loyal volunteers and employs approximately 127 local independent contractors annually. Circle also provides nine paid internships to college students, three college scholarships, and arts scholarships to children grades PreK-8 each year. An Environmental Leadership contest for ages 6-14 is also available.

How it all began

Grand Rapids Community Summer Theatre, also known as Circle at the Rowe, was founded in 1952 by Norma Brink, Ted Brink and Sydney Spayde. Its first season was held in 1953.

The Rowe Hotel housed the Theatre for eight years. Due to the shape of the rented room, the play performance area was arena-style with the audience seated around the actors.

Over the years, Circle moved to various other locations, finally finding a home at the Pavilion in John Ball Park for 40 years. Growing audiences and a need for more technically adequate facilities, Circle Theatre searched for a new home and found a partnership with Catholic Secondary Schools and Aquinas College, opening of a new Performing Arts Center at the College in 2003.

Public Museum announces ‘Bodies Revealed’ tickets are on sale

The Grand Rapids Public Museum (GRPM) announced that tickets are now on sale for the return of the traveling exhibit, Bodies Revealed,opening Nov. 16.

 The exhibition features real, whole and partial body specimens that have been preserved through an innovative process, giving visitors the opportunity to view the complexity of their own organs and systems like never before.

Admission to Bodies Revealed is $15 for adults, $10 for children, $12 for Kent County resident adults, $7 for Kent County resident children, $7 for Museum member adults and member children. Tickets include general admission to the Museum, and can be purchased online at grpm.org or by calling 616-929-1700.

Each ticket to Bodies Revealed will be stamped with a specific entry time. When buying tickets, visitors may make reservations for any time slot during the run of the exhibition.

Museum members can be the first to see the new exhibit at the members only preview on Saturday, November 16 from 8 to 10 a.m. Member preview tickets are available at grpm.org/Bodies. 

This phenomenal exhibition about the amazing and complex machine we call the human body, showcases 10 real full bodies and more than 100 organs and partial body specimens. The exhibition respectfully displays each specimen to tell the story of the miraculous systems at work. With a reverent, academic approach, this display allows people of all ages to more closely observe the skeletal, muscular, nervous, digestive, respiratory, reproductive and circulatory systems, and to absorb information normally reserved only for medical professionals.

Many of the whole body specimens are presented in vivid athletic poses that allow visitors to better understand their own everyday motions and activities, while other specimens illustrate the damage that can be caused to organs by habits like over-eating, lack of exercise and smoking.

The human body specimens in the exhibition are preserved through a technique called polymer preservation. The process permanently preserves human tissue through the use of liquid silicone rubber that is treated and hardened. The result is a rubberized specimen, preserved to the cellular level, showcasing the complexity of the body’s many bones, muscles, nerves, blood vessels and organs.

Public Museum announces tickets on sale for ‘Dragons, Unicorns & Mermaids’ exhibit

The Grand Rapids Public Museum (GRPM) announced today that tickets are now on sale for the new traveling exhibit, Dragons, Unicorns & Mermaids, which will open this November.

 

Dragons, Unicorns & Mermaids, organized by the American Museum of Natural History in New York, traces the natural and cultural roots of some of the world’s most enduring mythological creatures from Asia, Europe, the Americas, and beyond.

 

Opening on Saturday, Nov. 11, visitors will explore the various mythical creatures of the world. Dragons, Unicorns & Mermaids features models and replicas of preserved specimens as well as cast fossils of prehistoric animals to investigate how they could have, through misidentification, speculation, fear, or imagination, inspired the development of some legendary creatures.

 

Admission to Dragons, Unicorns & Mermaids is $12 for adults, $7 for children, $9 for Kent County resident adults, $4 for Kent County resident children, and $2 for all Museum members. Tickets include general admission to the Museum, and can be purchased online at grpm.org or by calling 616-929-1700.

 

Museum members can be the first to see the new exhibit at the members only preview on Friday, Nov. 10, from 6 to 10 p.m. Members are encouraged to dress as their favorite mythical character for extra excitement! Member preview tickets are $2 per member, and available at grpm.org/Dragons.

 

Dragons, Unicorns & Mermaids offers many interactive stations throughout the exhibition. Visitors can build their own dragon on an engaging touch-screen and watch it come alive before their eyes in a virtual environment.

 

Visitors will touch casts of a narwhal tusk to discover how they lent credence to the centuries-old belief in the unicorn. Hands-on stations also include the lower jaw of Gigantopithecus (extinct group of apes) and a life-size reproduction of the talon of a Haast’s eagle.  

 

The exhibition will include imaginative models, paintings, and textiles, along with other cultural objects from around the world. The exhibit will bring to light surprising similarities and differences in the ways people around the world have been inspired by nature to envision and depict these strange and wonderful creatures.

 

This exhibit will be located on the Museum’s third floor and run from Nov. 11 to May 20.

 

Dragons, Unicorns & Mermaids is organized by the American Museum of Natural History, New York (amnh.org), in collaboration with the Australian National Maritime Museum, Sydney; Canadian Museum of History, Gatineau-Quebec; Fernbank Museum of Natural History, Atlanta; and The Field Museum, Chicago.

Grand Rapids Public Museum makes Maker Faire tickets available

Maker Faire is back in Grand Rapids on August 19 & 20 for its 4th year, once again held at the Grand Rapids Public Museum (GRPM) and nearby Grand Valley State University’s Hall of Engineering. Combining a traditional science fair with innovation and engineering, community makers will showcase what they have made and share what they have learned.

 

The Faire will be open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, August 19 and from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, August 20.

 

Grand Rapids Maker Faire tickets are on sale now! Receive $2 off with early bird tickets, now through Friday, August 4. Early bird tickets for a two-day pass are $16 for adults, $14 for seniors and $6 for children, and single day passes are $8 for adults, $7 for seniors and $3 for children. Part science fair, part county fair, and part something entirely new, Maker Faire gathers all-ages to learn and teach about new ideas and collaborations! Interactive stations and inventions will be showcased by tech enthusiasts, crafters, educators, tinkerers, hobbyists, engineers, artists, students, and commercial exhibitors. All of these “makers” come to Maker Faire to show what they have made and to share what they have learned. Visitors to this year’s Grand Rapids Maker Faire can expect to see and interact with more than 150 maker booths.

 

Featured Maker

This year the Grand Rapids Maker Faire will see a special Maker, the Chicago Crucible, doing the first ever iron pour on the Grand Rapids Public Museum’s lawn! Visitors are able to purchase a small cast to carve, and see the casts be poured during the event on Saturday, August 19! The casts will cool overnight, and be available for pick up at the event on Sunday, August 20!

 

The call for makers is now open through July 16. Any groups or individuals interested in participating in this inaugural event should complete the application at GrandRapids.MakerFaire.com.

Van Andel tickets for The Who concert go on sale Friday

One of rock’s most legendary and defining bands, THE WHO announced today that they will return to Grand Rapids to perform at Van Andel Arena for one night only on July 25, at 7:30 p.m. The London Souls will open the show.

 

Tickets go on sale to the general public beginning Friday, March 24 at 11:00 AM. Ticket prices are $39.50, $59.50, $82 and $139.50 and will be available at the Van Andel Arena and DeVos Place® box offices, online at Ticketmaster.com, and charge by phone at 1-800-745-3000. VIP packages will be available via Ticketmaster. A purchase limit of eight (8) tickets will apply to each order and prices are subject to change.

 

Fans can expect the band to take them on an ‘Amazing Journey’ through their entire career from the days of ‘The High Numbers’ to classic albums such as ‘Who’s Next’ ‘Tommy,’ ‘Quadrophenia,’ ‘My Generation’ and ‘Live at Leeds’ up to the present day.
