Wyoming junior high to reopen Oct. 26 after short closure due to COVID-19 positive test

Wyoming Public Schools Superintendent Craig Hoekstra announced Oct. 22 that, after students and staff at Wyoming Junior High moved to remote learning early this week due to a positive COVID-19 test result, the school would return to in-person education on Monday, Oct. 26.

On Tuesday, Oct. 20, the district was notified by the Kent County Health Department (KCHD) that an individual at the junior high had received a positive COVID-19 test result.

The move to remote learning began immediately, on Wednesday, Oct. 21, and ran through today, Friday, Oct. 23.

According to the Oct. 22 district statement: “Out of an abundance of caution and in collaboration with the Kent County Health Department, it was determined that closing the building would give the KCHD the necessary time to complete contract tracing and contact any staff and/or student(s) that may have come in contact with those who have tested positive. This also allowed us to slow any potential community spread as well as thoroughly clean and disinfect the building while staff and students were not present.”

Other WPS school buildings except Gladiola elementary — which is currently also in a remote-learning status due to positive COVID-19 testing — remain open for in-person learning.

The district statement also “urges all WPS staff and students who experience symptoms or who may have been exposed to COVID-19 to get tested and self-quarantine. Parents are encouraged to monitor their children for the onset of any symptoms related to COVID-19. If there is any change in your child’s health, please contact your medical provider.”

Kentwood to host modified Trunk or Treat drive-through event Saturday

The City of Kentwood invites city families to participate in a Trunk or Treat Drive-through event this weekend as “masked goblins, princesses, ghosts, witches, vampires and the likes” are also invited to haunt the city’s annual event Saturday, Oct. 24.
 

According to an announcement from the city, the free event will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the parking lot at the Kent District Library – Kentwood (Richard L. Root) branch, located at 4950 Breton Ave. SE.

Each year, children traditionally trick-or-treat around in the city’s public works facility full of decorated city and community vehicles. The year, however, to keep everyone safe, families will drive through a line of decorated trucks to collect the coveted treats.

“This year has been filled with so many cancellations, so we wanted to organize an event that will give kids something to look forward to and feel more normal while still making sure participants are safe,” Val Romeo, Kentwood Parks and Recreation director, said in supplied material. “Halloween is already a spirited and fun holiday so we’re looking forward to seeing all of the extra creativity that comes out of this year’s event.”

Children are encouraged to wear Halloween costumes and bring their own candy-collection bag. All participants are required to wear a mask and remain in their vehicles for the event.

Participants will also have the opportunity to virtually vote for their favorite trunk out of the 20-plus organizations and community groups that will be handing out individually packaged treats with masks and gloves on throughout the event.

The Kentwood Parks and Recreation Department will continue to monitor public health guidance and state orders, which may necessitate changes to the event. More information is available at kentwood.us/trunkortreat.

Wyoming Public Schools Superintendent Craig Hoekstra announced today, Oct. 20, that students and staff at Wyoming Junior High will move to remote learning for contract tracing after receiving notification from the Kent County Health Department (KCHD) of a positive COVID-19 test result.

On Tuesday, Oct. 20, the district was notified by the Kent County Health Department (KCHD) that an individual at the junior high had received a positive COVID-19 test result.

“Out of an abundance of caution and in collaboration with the Kent County Health Department, it has been determined that closing the building will give the KCHD the necessary time to complete contract tracing and contact any staff and/or student(s) that may have come in contact with those who have tested positive,” according to the statement. “This will also allow us to slow any potential community spread.”

The move to remote learning will begin immediately, on Wednesday, Oct. 21, and run through at least Friday, Oct. 23.

“The District will work alongside the KCHD to assess the reopening of Wyoming Junior High the following week,” according to the statement. “An update will be provided to all Wyoming Junior High families on Friday, October 23rd. During the closure, the District will thoroughly clean and disinfect the school building while staff and students are not present.”

Wyoming Public Schools Superintendent Craig Hoekstra announced over the weekend that students and staff at Gladiola Elementary School will move to remote learning after receiving notification from the Kent County Health Department of a positive COVID-19 test result.

All other WPS school buildings will remain open for in-person learning.
 

The day of the announcement, Saturday, Oct. 17, the district was notified by the Kent County Health Department (KCHD) that an individual at Gladiola elementary had received a positive COVID-19 test result. Due to the extent of possible students and staff who made contact with this individual, the KCHD has recommended that the district close Gladiola elementary for in-person instruction.
 

The closure period will run from today, Monday, Oct. 19, through Wednesday, Oct. 28, and all “learning during this timeframe will be conducted online,” according to the statement.

Kentwood volunteers battle strangling vines that endanger city parks

What’s in a weed? While for many of us our notion of weeds are the pesky and unwanted plants that compete for light and nutrients in our gardens, but a forest or the wooded section of a park has a much broader and even more sinister experience with weeds.

 

The Bittersweet vine is a problem across the nation and in Michigan. And Kentwood’s park trees are not immune. (WKTV)

These are the invasive species — species of plants that include certain types of vines that grow so aggressively so as to literally kill not only surrounding plants but even large trees.

For Jessica Schulte, district manager for Kent Conservation District, it all starts innocently enough; an attractive wreath sheathed in golden and red berries is purchased by a homeowner who enjoys the wreath and some point will discard it.

If the wreath has the attractive red and gold berries, chances are this is one of the versions of Bittersweet vine that has been dubbed one of the most invasive plants species in North America. The plant is capable of killing large trees and, with its aggressive growth, it will completely envelope a forest habitat, choking off all other growth and changing the forest forever.

And this is the challenge for Schulte.

Every summer and fall, Schulte and a group called the “Invasive Species Strike Team” fan out to West Michigan forests and residences to yank, cut and remove the vines of the Bittersweet and other invasive species.

Kentwood vs. a ‘Godzilla’ of a plant

With the Bittersweet growing to more than 66 feet in height, it might somewhat be likened to confronting a Godzilla in the forest. In a very short period of time, the Bittersweet will completely envelope a tree’s canopy, blocking sunlight while the vines have a remarkable ability to choke off the flow of nutrients by literally strangling the trunk.

“There are no insects, molds or fungus growth to keep the Bittersweet vine in check,” Schulte said in a recent telephone interview with WKTV, as she was busily preparing another team for a site visit that would determine the extent of Bittersweet vine damage.

“We have a huge infestation in the Ada and Cascade region,” she added also pointing out that Michigan currently lacks formal regulation of invasive species.

But now Schulte seems to have attracted a significant ally.

Mayor Stephen Kepley of the City of Kentwood was on a walk this spring in one of the city’s parks and noticed large canopies of vine growth covering some of the trees along with vines literally strangling the trunks of trees.

Mayor Kepley reached out to the Kent Conservation District and further investigation found that there was more than just one area in Kentwood that the Bittersweet vine was invading.

“I’m actually surprised that more cities, like Kentwood are not taking action against the Bittersweet,” Schulte said, “because the damage they cause can be prevented.”

Formation of Kentwood’s ‘strike team’

Like horticultural super hero figures, the Kent Conservation District has created “strike teams” of volunteers to fan out into urban wooded areas and forest to identify and remove the problem vines and weeds.

While our gardening grandfathers and grandmothers might have reminded us that regular weeding was the equivalent of an ounce of prevention being worth more than a pound of cure, that prevention/cure from the strike team is underway in Kentwood.

In early October, Mayor Kepley joined with community volunteers in training for the task of ridding Kentwood parks of aggressive weeds, like the Bittersweet, that threaten the parks.

Now there are more training sessions available through the winter and into the spring. And given the speed at which the vine grows and its capability of ruining the appearance of city parks, Schulte points out that the more volunteers the better.

To assist with awareness and sign-ups, Kentwood has set up a page within the city’s website that allows residents to learn more about the invasive vine and how they can join to stop the spread.

Good vines and bad vines

Schulte hastens to add that the Bittersweet is not like the wild grape vines or other indigenous vines like the Virginia Creeper. She points out that even poison ivy in the forest is good because the berries it produces have a high fat content which help birds survive the long winter.

While birds also feast on Bittersweet berries, they also spread the seeds which only contributes to forest damage.

 

At the same time, Schulte states that while beneficial vines and trees are falling victim to the spread of the Bittersweet, it is also affecting wildlife.

“Migrating birds are down by 40 percent because often these city parks serve as stopovers for food, but the Bittersweet is enveloping and destroying the wooded canopy and eliminating the food supply,” she said.

At the training sessions, volunteers learn how to recognize invasive weeds and vines from the beneficial ones and how to effectively remove them. Schulte points out that volunteers will also need to be trained on how to effectively remove enough of a vine to prevent it from growing back.

“If homeowners would like they can reach out to us with pictures and we can help identify if they have problem vines,” said Schulte.

Kent County’s CARES Act dollars to fund community violence prevention grants

The Kent County Board of Commissioners announced this week the recent allocation of  $500,000 of CARES Act funding to community violence prevention grants “to help stem the increasing rates of violence occurring during the COVID-19 pandemic.”

The grant program will be administered by the Heart of West Michigan United Way.

Grant applications are due to the Heart of West Michigan United Way by noon on Monday, Oct. 19, and all funds must be expended by Dec. 15, 2020 pursuant to federal requirements.

“We have seen a rise in violent crime throughout the County since the start of the pandemic,” Kent County Sheriff Michelle LaJoye-Young said in supplied material. “We need to work together as a community on prevention and education initiatives that can help reduce the incidents that result in violence.”
 

The Community Violence Prevention Grant Program will assist nonprofit organizations in preventing violent behaviors from occurring, stopping the progression of violence, and rehabilitating individuals with established violent behavior, according to the announcement.

To receive a grant, applicants must be a 501(c)(3) based in Kent County, have been in existence for at least one year, deliver all programming in Kent County, comply with all applicable state and federal laws, and provide a written summary of the project and its outcomes in January 2021.

 
A selection committee comprised of Kent County leaders, law enforcement, and community members will award grants ranging from $5,000 to $150,000.

 
“Ensuring we have a safe community is a fundamental role of government. However, we alone cannot solve the spike in violent crimes that is occurring because of COVID-19,” Kent County Board of Commissioners Chair Mandy Bolter said in supplied material. “It was a priority for the board to support local, grassroots programs that are working to make our communities safe for all.”

 

Woodland Mall to host family-friendly outdoor ‘Pop-up Fall Festival’ Oct. 17

Woodland Mall announced this week that it will celebrate the fall season — the beautiful leaves, crisp air and, of course, caramel apples — this weekend when it hosts a Pop-Up Fall Festival in the Von Maur parking lot.

The outdoor event, which the entire family can enjoy while remaining safe and healthy, will take place on Saturday, Oct. 17, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., in collaboration with ACP Entertainment.

“We’re looking forward to celebrating the season and all the great activities and goodies it brings,” Woodland Mall Marketing Director Cecily McCabe said in supplied material. “Despite the limitations of COVID, we’ve been working hard to offer some fall fun that will allow us to gather and enjoy autumn safely. We’ll certainly be using Michigan’s beautiful fall weather to our advantage.”

According to the announcement, the festival will offer treats such as elephant ears, caramel apples, caramel corn, donuts and cider all day for participants to enjoy. Those interested may choose to either drive through or walk up to booths to purchase these treats, which can be purchased with cash or card. Seating will not be provided — participants are asked to enjoy the fall treats in their vehicles.

Festival activities will take place from noon to 4 p.m. and will include a bounce house, corn maze, spinning strawberry, train rides and more. Tickets can be purchased online or at the door. Only those planning to participate in activities need tickets.

Per state and Kent County Health Department guidance, the attraction area will be limited to 100 guests or fewer at a time and all participants will be required to wear a mask. There will be plenty of hand sanitizing stations and room for physical distancing.
 

Deep cleaning and sanitization of all attractions will take place throughout the day, according to the announcement.

Kentwood to again offer brush and leaf drop-off programs to city residents

The City of Kentwood will again offer its Brush and Leaf Drop-Off programs to residents this fall. According to a statement from the city, both sites will run from Saturday, Oct. 17 through Sunday, Dec. 6, from noon to 8 p.m., Monday through Saturday, and noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday.

Residents can drop off brush, sticks, tree limbs, logs, loose leaves and grass clippings at the Kentwood Department of Public Works, 5068 Breton Ave. SE.

“With the change of seasons, getting debris out of the right-of-way is incredibly important,” Jim Wolford, Department of Public Works supervisor, said in supplied material. “Clearing brush and leaves prevents buildup of material in the roadway and storm drains, keeping our infrastructure running smoothly throughout the city.”

Beyond helping make yard maintenance easier, leaf and brush collection services also help residents stay in compliance with city ordinances, according to the statement. The accumulation of leaves and debris within the lot line of a property or upon the adjacent right-of-way is prohibited in the City of Kentwood, as is burning leaves and brush.

The service is available to Kentwood residents only. Anyone wishing to drop off items must show proof of residency.

Materials that cannot be accepted include: trash, plastic bags, dirt, concrete, asphalt, tires, rocks, stones, construction materials, glass or metal.

The Rapid to host public outreach sessions on proposed Wyoming, Kentwood service changes

The Rapid announced last week that its Mobility for All planning process will continue its public outreach efforts this week with a series of virtual meetings to gather feedback on proposed changes to The Rapid’s bus service that may take effect in the fall of 2021.

Possible changes to The Rapid’s Southwest service area — including Routes 8, 10, 16, 24, 28, 44 and the Silver Line — will be discussed on Facebook Live and Zoom platforms Thursday, Oct. 15, from 9-10 a.m. and again from 6-7 p.m. (See a Facebook page on this event here.)

According to the announcement, the proposed changes to route alignments, stops and schedules, and the introduction of new on-demand zones, are a result of more than a year of “technical analysis and public feedback” on The Rapid’s current operations.

“These meetings will offer multiple opportunities for public feedback and input on proposed changes that we believe will offer improved service and innovative new options to our riders,” Nick Monoyios, planning manager at The Rapid, said in supplied material. “COVID-19 has forced us to change our approach to outreach and engagement, but we’re confident that our process will create the best possible outcome for our riders and the community.”

The interactive digital workshops will be offered twice a day Monday, Oct. 12 through Thursday, Oct. 15 to highlight the proposed changes and offer participants the opportunity for questions, feedback, and suggestions.

There will be a comprehensive overview on Friday morning, Oct. 16, from 9-10 a.m.

The other sessions which will focus on other specific geographic areas and routes in The Rapid’s service area include:

 

Northeast Service Changes — Routes 11, 13, 14, 15  — Oct. 12, 9-10 a.m. and 6-7 p.m.

 

Southeast Service Changes — Routes 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 17, 28, 44 — Oct. 13, 9-10 a.m. and 6-7 p.m.

 

Northwest Service Changes — Routes 7, 9, 12, 18, Laker Line — Oct. 14, 9-10 a.m. and 6-7 p.m.

 

According to the announcement, additional feedback will be solicited throughout the month of October, and will be part of informing final recommendations to The Rapid’s Board of Directors in early 2021.

“Started in 2019, Mobility for All, also known as a Comprehensive Operational Analysis (COA) in the transit industry, is an effort to improve the efficiency, productivity and reliability of The Rapid’s bus service,” according to the announcement. “By working within The Rapid’s current budget constraints, Mobility for All will result in better transit and mobility service without additional cost to the taxpayers in The Rapid’s service area.”

It has been 15 years since The Rapid conducted a COA and this plan accounts for changes in demand for transit, travel patterns, emerging mobility technologies and relies on extensive public engagement and feedback. Initial changes to bus service as the result of the COA would take effect in the fall of 2021.

Should The Rapid’s Board of Directors decide to move forward with the proposed changes, additional public hearings and opportunities for feedback will take place in early 2021.

Lane closures at 44th and Breton to start Tuesday; alternative travel routes advised

The City of Kentwood announced Friday, Oct. 9, that beginning at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 13, lane closures will be in place at the intersection of 44th Street SE and Breton Avenue SE through the following weekend while a contractor makes concrete pavement repairs.

According to the city statement, the work will require closures of east and westbound 44th Street lanes approaching the intersection, as well as one northbound lane on Breton Avenue.

“Drivers are encouraged to plan ahead and seek an alternate route,” according to the statement. “Northbound Breton Avenue traffic to eastbound 44th Street will be detoured through the intersection, then south back on Breton to westbound 44th Street to eastbound 44th Street.”

Weather permitting, all lanes are expected to reopen by 7 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 19.

Woodland Mall to host Employment Expo on Oct. 15 with ‘hundreds’ of jobs available

Woodland Mall will host an Employment Expo on Thursday, Oct. 15, from 1-7 p.m., with nearly 30 West Michigan employers seeking to fill hundreds of positions in the mall and around the community, according to an announcement this week from management.

Job seekers will have the opportunity to learn about full-time, part-time and seasonal positions with Allied Universal and Peoplemark, the two title sponsors of the event. Other area employers in the cleaning and maintenance, quick food service and health care industries will also be on-site.

Many retailers at the mall are also hiring for both full-time and seasonal positions. A variety of Woodland Mall clothing, shoe and jewelry retailers as well as restaurants will participate in the expo with a variety of employment opportunities including full-time management roles. “With rising unemployment, it is more important than ever to help our community’s job seekers connect with West Michigan employers and support our local economy,” Cecily McCabe, Woodland Mall marketing director, said in supplied material. “Woodland Mall is delighted to host this employment expo, which also allows several of our own retailers who are gearing up for the holiday season to participate.

“We offer a variety of career options with competitive wages in both sales and management for anyone interested in retail,” she said.

Hourly wages for entry-level sales associate positions at the mall range from $12 to $14. The average salary for management positions is $55,000. Job seekers are encouraged to explore the list of Woodland Mall openings.

Woodland Mall asks all guests, including employers and job seekers, to follow CDC recommendation by using the hand sanitizer stations located throughout the mall, wearing facial coverings and practicing physical distancing.

In order to comply with Michigan requirements, occupancy numbers remain limited as the mall operates on reduced hours Monday through Saturday 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 6 p.m. Some stores modify those hours further.

Kent County clerk, WKTV team to provide voter information in support of ‘Kent County Votes’ effort

With election day now less than four weeks away, Kent County Clerk Lisa Posthumus Lyons announced this week her office’s Kent County Votes, a voter education effort which offers county voters information resources “to vote safely and securely up to and on November 3rd.”

Part of that effort is a public service announcement recorded at WKTV Community Media, as well as radio and digital advertisements, and upcoming tele-townhall events will provide voters the opportunity to ask questions of Kent County election administrators.

The effort also includes a redesign of the Kent County Elections website, now accessible via KentCountyVotes.com.

“Your right to vote is sacred, and so is your right to safety,” Posthumus Lyons said in supplied material and the WKTV video. “In Kent County we take both very seriously. COVID-19 has disrupted a lot this year, but it won’t disrupt this fall’s election.”

Four tips for voters

According to a statement from the clerk’s office, there are four aspects of the Nov. 3 election voters should be aware of:

Whether voters cast their ballots in-person at the polls or cast an absentee ballot, their vote will be counted this year. Clerks across the county are busy modifying polling places to adhere to CDC safety and social distancing guidelines as well.  It will be safe to vote in person. Polling locations can be found at kentcountyvotes.com.

Recent election law changes make registering and voting easier than ever before. Every registered voter now has the right to vote absentee without needing an excuse.  Also, citizens can register right up to and even on election day at their local clerk’s office, and still cast their ballot. However, it is highly encouraged to register before election day.

Those choosing to vote absentee have three options for returning their ballots: hand deliver a completed ballot to your city or township clerk’s office; return the ballot by mail, but plan accordingly by mailing the ballot back at least 7-10 before Election Day; or drop your ballot off in a designated secure drop box in the city or township where the voter is registered. Drop box locations can be found at kentcountyvotes.com.

Godfrey-Lee schools become first in West Michigan to offer COVID-19 rapid tests at schools

Godfrey-Lee Public Schools announced today, Oct. 7, that it has made rapid-response saliva tests available to all students and staff with symptoms consistent with COVID-19.

According to a supplied statement, the testing program is a pilot project conducted in collaboration with the Kent County Health Department and Arctic Medical Laboratories, and provided at no cost to students or families. Students or staff that are flagged by daily health screenings will be eligible for testing that has a 24-hour response time.
 

“Testing is another mitigation strategy we believe to be critical in keeping our schools open for in person learning.”  Kevin Polston, superintendent of Godfrey-Lee Public Schools, said in supplied material.

The pilot project at Lee will be closely watched by the Kent County Health Department (KCHD) and other health officials.

“Once we learn valuable lessons from this pilot with the Godfrey Lee school district, we will offer this rapid test resource to other Kent County School districts,” Joann Hoganson,  KCHD Community Wellness Division director, said in supply material. “Our goal is to identify COVID-19 students and staff quickly so that they can be isolated. This will help prevent the spread of the virus in the schools.”

Similar to other testing sites in Kent County, private health insurance or Medicaid will be billed for the testing for those covered by insurance, according to the announcement. And the county health department is using federal CARES Act funding to pay for tests for uninsured individuals “to make testing accessible to all” students.
 

“Collaboration amongst public organizations demonstrates the mutual value of service to our community,” Polston said. “Our shared responsibility is maintaining overall public health and safety.  Schools are vital for learning, but also for other essential services critical to student wellbeing.  Accessible, rapid-response testing will keep our schools as safe as possible.”

County Health Department: COVID-19 isolation, quarantine orders not impacted by supreme court decision

Following the Friday, Oct. 2, decision by the Michigan Supreme Court to strike down Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s COVID-19 related executive orders, the Kent County Health Department issued a statement today that, in part, said that “orders for isolation and quarantine are not affected by the Supreme Court’s ruling.”

The Oct. 5 statement, attributed to Dr. Adam London, Director of the Kent County Health Department (KCHD), was in response to the supreme court ruling that the Governor did not have the authority to issue executive orders under emergency declarations past April 30 of this year.

“Actions such as orders for isolation and quarantine are not affected by the Supreme Court’s ruling,” Dr. Landon said in the statement. “These actions are authorized under the Michigan Public Health Code, a law that was enacted by the Michigan Legislature in 1978. The KCHD will continue to use public health orders and enforcement actions as appropriate under law as this agency has done for many decades.”

The KCHD statement also “stresses” the importance of adhering to the guidelines set forth by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to mitigate the spread of COVID-19. Those strategies include wearing facial coverings in indoor public places, maintaining social distance, frequent hand washing, and staying home if you are sick.

“The KCHD is confident Kent County residents will continue to take the steps necessary to place their families, friends, and coworkers at the least possible risk for contracting COVID-19,” according to the statement.
 

Also according to the statement, the KCHD “is hopeful the Legislature and the Governor will work together to protect public health in a collaborative and expedited manner. The KCHD is communicating closely with officials at the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services and other local health departments to identify pathways forward which respect rule of law and are protective of the health and safety of our communities.”

Gov. Whitmer, also today, Oct. 5, issued a statement that address the issue of continued health concerns related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Governor Gretchen Whitmer and Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) Director Robert Gordon filed a motion with the Michigan Supreme Court (today) requesting that they clarify that their October 2nd ruling does not take effect until Friday, October 30th. … Ensuring this transition period will allow the governor, local health departments, and the Michigan Legislature to work together to put protections in place that will keep Michiganders safe and protect our economy.”

Kentwood’s pop-up farmers market to help community greet the fall season on Oct. 1

The City of Kentwood’s Pop-up Farmers Market returns this week with a fall event that not only brings the seasons’s bountiful agricultural harvest and beautiful colors to town but also allows the public to reconnect with the Kentwood Parks and Recreation Department and its various actives and efforts.

Following its successful summer pop-up farmers market, another free and open-to-the-public market is planned for Thursday, Oct. 1, from 4 to 6:30 p.m., in front of the Kent District Library – Kentwood (Richard L. Root) Branch, located at 4950 Breton Ave. SE.

While there will be a host of local vendors offering fresh and locally produced food and other items, as well as a meal available from Street Chef Shaw, the city’s parks and recreation department will deliver something of its own.

“The Kentwood Parks and Recreation Department not only organizes Farmers Market events, but also participates,” Kristina Colby, Kentwood recreation program coordinator, said to WKTV. “With our own booth set up at the Kentwood Farmers Market, we’re able to talk with residents about upcoming events and programs. We love any opportunity to engage with our community about the wide variety of enriching experiences we offer for people of all ages and abilities.”

But, of course, there are all those other great reasons to pay the farmers market a visit.

The outdoor event will feature a variety of seasonal items from nearly 20 vendors, including pumpkins, gourds, produce, microgreens, cheese, jams, honey, mushrooms, baked goods and more. Street Chef Shaw will be serving tacos and quesadillas.

Marketgoers will be required to wear masks when walking through the market and interacting with vendors. There will also be a counterclockwise traffic flow, according to the statement from the city. The Kentwood Farmers Market accepts Bridge cards and P-EBT, as well as SNAP, Double Up Food Bucks and Senior Project FRESH/Market FRESH.

“Our Pop-Up Farmers Market offers community members an opportunity to get outside to enjoy the nice, fall weather and have fun exploring a variety of fresh and locally produced food,” Colby said. “We welcome everyone to step outside and join us to shop for great seasonal products from a safe distance to support local farmers, food producers and vendors.”

The business community of Wyoming and Kentwood has held strong together during the coronavirus pandemic of 2020, and part of the reason is the continued work of the  Wyoming/Kentwood Area Chamber of Commerce with events such as a recent Team Up Tuesday held at the Family Network of Wyoming.

WKTV was there to tour and talk with chamber and Family Network leadership, and members of the business community, to find out more about the local non-profit and how it helps some businesses keep on doing business.

Held Sept. 15, the outdoor event was also open to the public to “hang out and connect with each other.” Family Network of Wyoming, located on 44th street, conducted small group tours of its lending closet and food pantry. Snacks and refreshments were provided by The Candied Yam.

County Sheriff’s office’s new body cameras to come with ‘clearly defined protocols’ for use, public transparency

The Kent County Board of Commissioners last week approved a $2.2 million request from county Sheriff Michelle LaJoye-Young to purchase new body cameras for about 200 law enforcement personnel in the Sheriff’s Office, and well as replacement tasers for all officers and replacement in-car cameras for about 83 police cruisers.

“Combined with training and clearly defined protocols for camera use and for public access to video footage, body cameras are shown to be valuable tools to increase the accountability of all parties involved,” according to the Kent County announcement.

WKTV asked Sheriff LaJoye-Young to define those planned protocols for camera use and public access.

“Training is scheduled to happen as soon as we get the full delivery of the equipment and installation in the vehicles — it is a very hands-on training,” Sheriff LaJoye-Young said to WKTV. “We have developed a protocol. It has largely been based on our experience with in-car camera systems, but also on the guidance we have received from other departments who have had body cams in play for awhile. Obviously, protocol is always managed, it constantly gets updated. And so we are going to see how it starts and then adjust it if we need to.

“That protocol will be available (to the public) for people to understand. And they should expect that any time they are dealing directly with an officer who is in uniform and a body cam, that that body cam is recording. They are always free to ask an officer if their camera is recording, and our officers would be required to answer that question.”

Approximately 200 Sheriff’s office uniformed and plainclothes deputies and sergeants, community police officers, undercover officers and other personnel performing law enforcement duties will be equipped with body-worn cameras in the first quarter of 2021.
   

The funding for the body cameras and other upgrades was transferred from the projected Sheriff’s Office General Fund to the Fiscal Year 2020 Capital Improvement Program Fund, according to the county statement.
 

“The Board of Commissioners strongly supports Sheriff LaJoye-Young’s commitment to transparency, accountability and effective law enforcement practices,” Board of Commissioners chair Mandy Bolter say in supplied material.

The Sheriff echoed the public transparency aspect of the effort.
 

“This investment will allow for greater transparency for the residents in our community,” Sheriff LaJoye-Young said in supplied material. “Body cameras offer real-time information about what happened on a call for service or with any public contact. Plus, the footage from these calls can be used in training and monitoring exercises to strengthen the performance of our law enforcement officers in the field.”

According to the county’s announcement, the tasers, in-car video cameras and body cameras “are all part of one seamlessly integrated package” — a package the includes five cameras for the detective bureau interview room and 25 docking stations as well as a service contract at a cost of $75,000 per year for the second through fifth years of use.

“Altogether, this system will allow for a streamlined Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) and discovery process, further increasing the Sheriff’s Office transparency,” according to the statement.

Kent County health’s under-utilized COVID-19 testing sites offer free, fast turnaround to general public

For whatever reason, the number of people availing themselves of the Kent County Health Department’s free-to-the-public COVID-19 testing program has fallen drastically in the past few weeks.

According to a statement supplied to WKTV, “in July we were doing about 800 a week and are now at about 400.” And the decline is not only at the county’s three testing sites, but also at several partner sites as well, despite low or no wait time for appointments and a decreased turnaround time for results.

“We want people to know that testing is free, quick, easy and available,” Christopher Bendekgey, county health Community Clinical Services Division Director, said in supplied material. “People are still contracting the virus, but we suspect they’ve heard it’s hard to get an appointment or others have waited over a week for results, and they’re thinking, ‘why bother?’ But it’s vital that we continue to track and work to stop the spread of this disease in our community.”

According to the county health department, the vast majority of KCHD test results are coming back within 48 hours, some as fast as 24-36 hours. “Wait times for test results were running as high as seven to ten days at their peak in July,” according to the county statement.

Do you need to get tested?

The Kent County Health Department, “in accordance with CDC guidelines,” recommends a person get tested if you have had certain social interactions, or certain symptoms or combinations of symptoms.

You get tested if you have been in close contact with someone with COVID-19 (within 6 feet for 15 minutes), you suspect you’ve been exposed to someone with COVID-19, or you are in a “high COVID-19 transmission area and have attended a public or private gathering of more than 10 people where people weren’t wearing masks or social distancing.”

You should get tested if you have a deep cough, a shortness of breath or a new loss of taste of small; or if you have a combination of a fever, chills, body aches, headache, sore throat, nausea or vomiting, diarrhea, fatigue or congestion/runny nose.

Mums — and more — on exhibition as fall flowers, colors come to Meijer Gardens

The first day of fall is here, on Sept. 22, and Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park has opened its annual fall horticulture exhibition, Chrysanthemums & More!

The exhibition, which opened Sept. 18, reportedly the largest of its kind in Michigan, features expansive displays of chrysanthemums, fall foliage and family-friendly activities. The exhibition will be on display through Nov. 1.

“This year’s theme for Chrysanthemums & More! is ‘Naturally’,” Steve LaWarre, Meijer gardens director of horticulture, said in supplied material. “Our goal is that guests can experience the more natural and untamed side of the autumn season through the various displays of color, texture and patterns that are carefully designed to play upon the natural beauty of the changing fall landscape.”

Aware of the need for social distancing, even outdoors, plant displays throughout Meijer Gardens will intentionally be open and airy, “highlighting movement in contrast to a more traditional tight and manicured aesthetic of years past.”

The focal point of the inside display will be entering the Grace Jarecki Seasonal Display Greenhouse and witnessing a floor-to-ceiling chrysanthemum display. Presentations of large disbuds and beds of colorful plantings will complement this feature in the nearby Earl and Donnalee Holton Victorian Garden Parlor.

Outdoors, expansive beds of lush chrysanthemums will be arranged in stunning sweeps of color and will be balanced by a variety of ornamental plantings that highlight nature’s beauty.

Other activities coming this fall at Meijer Gardens include the Fall Bonsai Show, giant pumpkins and “Hallowee-Ones”.

Fall Bonsai Show, sponsored by the West Michigan Bonsai Club, will take place Oct. 3–4, and is open with regular admission. A variety of bonsai will be on display, from trees in early stages of training to lovely older trees. Also, visitors can watch bonsai artists at work and shop for bonsai trees as well as bonsai tools and supplies.

Also on that weekend will be Fall Family Day, on Oct. 3, 1-4 p.m., which will be focused on the Lena Meijer Children’s Garden. Activities include fall-inspired tunes and autumn-themed stories, a fiber arts demonstration and a naturalist walk.

Finally, Hallowee-Ones, for the “wee ones,” will occur Oct. 23, from 10 a.m. to noon, with parades at 10:15 and 11:15 a.m. This special event is designed for the youngest visitors, and children are encouraged to dress as a sculpture, mammal, fish, insect, bird, tree, flower, geologist or in any other way that highlights something about the Lena Meijer Children’s Garden. “No tricks, no treats, just fun!” according to supplied material.

The 75th anniversary of the end of World War II was commemorated locally Sept. 1-2 with local ceremonies including a socially distant Grand Rapids area flyover of war-era military aircraft.

In our own effort of remembrance of the “Greatest Generation”, WKTV sent camera persons out Sept. 2 to capture the local flyover of three restored military aircraft from the Yankee Air Museum, including a Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bomber, a Douglas C-47 Skytrain military transport, and a North American B-25 Mitchell medium bomber.

Chamber’s ‘Team Up Tuesday’ Wyoming community event set for Sept. 15

The business community of Wyoming and Kentwood has held strong together during the coronavirus pandemic of 2020, and in celebration of them working together they are preparing for a community event, Team Up Tuesday, on Tuesday, Sept. 15.

Hosted by Wyoming/Kentwood Chamber of Commerce, Family Network of Wyoming, and The Candied Yam, the outdoor event is open to the public to “hang out and connect with each other.” Light refreshmentswill be served by The Candied Yam.
 

The event will take place from 4:30-6 p.m., at Family Network of Wyoming on 44th street. Small group tours of the Family Network lending closet and food pantry will be part of the event as well.

Family friendly ‘Moovies’ coming to Fifth-Third Ballpark in September

The West Michigan Whitecaps and Milk Means More are bringing fans family friendly fun from Fifth-Third Ballpark once again, this time with a month full of ‘Moovies from the Mound” — all with safety at the forefront.

“Once our baseball season was cancelled on June 30th, we began working on ways to energize the event side of our business,” and came up with the idea of showing movies, Steve VanWagoner, Whitecaps director of marketing and media relations, said to WKTV.

Movies from the Mound will continue throughout September starting Friday, Sept. 11, with the first of two films starting at 6 p.m. There will also be films continuing on select Fridays and Saturdays, at various times. Fifth Third Ballpark is located at 4500 West River Dr., Comstock Park.

“We put together a safety plan and got advice from local health officials,” he said. “The plan included painted 120 12-foot by 12-foot plots in the outfield, distanced and will hold six people with lots of room. We check temperatures of everyone entering the ballpark and everyone (even children) wear masks when around in the park and take them off when in their plots.”

During the month of September showings will include “Pets 2”, “Remember the Titans”, “Frozen 2”, “Onward”, “The Mighty Ducks”, “Incredibles 2”, “Aladdin”, “The Greatest Showman”, “Harry Potter”, and “Pirates of the Caribbean”. Each screening will begin with a 10-minute presentation from Milk Means More to educate viewers on the importance of dairy farmers and dairy products.

Plots are $35 per plot, but to see both movies in a night a plot must be purchased for each movie. Each plot is socially distanced and includes six tickets per plot in the outfield.

Outfield restrooms will be open. Standard Fifth Third Ballpark Policy for prohibited items will apply — no outside food and beverage, glass bottles/containers, coolers, alcoholic drinks, smoking including E-Cigs, backpacks, bug spray, pets/animals (except certified assistance dogs) or weapons.

WKTV lets the Sun In

From that nascent moment when Benjamin Franklin’s discovered electricity in 1757 to September 1882 when Thomas Edison went online with his first power dynamo to generate it, the transformative power (pun intended) of electricity on society is evident everywhere. So common and everyday that we don’t even imagine the world we live in without electricity. Perhaps next to the discovery of fire, the harnessing of electricity is one of the greatest leaps in the advancement of civilization, completely transforming the personal lives of everyone on the planet.

But it wasn’t until the burgeoning environmental movement of the 1960s and 1970s that the primary means of powering the generators to make the world’s electricity came under closer scrutiny. Air and water pollution from coal fired power plants and the early accidents with nuclear power inspired and drove science to continue to look for other means of generating electricity. By far one of the biggest contributors to airborne pollution, coal-fired power plants were on track to only increase their output; both of electricity and pollution, as the earth’s population grew and demand exponentially increased.

A key question is how does that sort of information filter down to the average business or home?  WKTV Community Media here in Wyoming, Michigan, has taken the plunge into renewable energy and spent the last three months converting the power needs of a full fledged television station over to solar power. For a television station like WKTV, the power needs are significant. At any one time, full use of television and media production happening in the media facility consumes as much as 15,000 – 25,000 watts of electricity.  There are the lights, cameras, a control room and in addition to productions there are offices, editing bays, master control, a newsroom with its own studio needs and remote vehicles plugged in to the main building when not on the road and all of it operating from 9 a.m. until 10 p.m. each day. It all adds up to hefty and expensive electrical use.

During the past 12 years, WKTV’s monthly electrical bill has tripled. Even taking into account rate increases, which have been relatively constant, that’s a dramatic increase and reflects facility growth. Realizing this was a financial issue as much as an environmental one, WKTV sought to discover how they could reduce this significant expense.

Getting By With a Little Help from Our Friends

There’s the familiar and sometimes sarcastic saying of “Your tax dollars at work” and perhaps for once it’s become a truism. With NASA’s now nearly 60-year history of scientific and tech innovation playing out in the marketplace, the benefits are being felt at WKTV.

   

In 1954, American scientists at Bell Labs created the very first photovoltaic cell, converting sunlight into electrical current. At the time, the efficiency of that first cell was only 4 percent, but the early space program instantly recognized this capability of solar power to provide current to everything early NASA researchers and scientists were dreaming of putting up into space. In fact, one of the most rewarding partnerships between government and private enterprise is found in NASA’s sharing of scientific knowledge with the private sector in hopes of picking up the pace of technological developments. NASA has devoted an entire division, called Advanced Energy Photovoltaics, for the last several decades to this ongoing collaboration with American private enterprise.

So if some wonder what this means to the average home or average-sized business, the answer is “plenty.” The technological advancements made at NASA in the last 60 plus years extend way beyond Velcro and cordless drills. If someone considers the advancements in solar necessary for the Mars Rovers to successfully operate on the red planet, where incidentally the power of the sun is significantly weaker; then a person can appreciate how this can translate to real practical advancements here on Earth.

When WKTV initially inquired about solar power for its facility, there was an initial assumption that it would be expensive and only moderately effective, but there was a feeling that it was worth at least an inquiry. After submitting months of electrical usage reports to multiple companies for analysis on the effectiveness of a solar array, the prospects were encouraging. On average, the prognosis that came in was that by switching to solar, WKTV could see a reduction of 90-95 percent in its annual electrical costs.

In other words, it was no longer your grandfather’s solar. Solar had come a long way increasing the ratio of light converted to electricity. And with a payback schedule of 13 years for an array of 252 panels spread over a 10,000 square-foot roof, the numbers did work in WKTV’s favor. The operating principle for solar operation is relatively simple: once sunlight is converted into electricity on the roof, an array of inverters installed inside the facility distribute that power to the facility. Any unused portion of solar electricity is then sent onto the grid where Consumer’s Energy will apply it to its own power generation needs and that will then generate a credit toward the facility’s power costs. This method is what reduces the annual electric costs by as much as 95 percent. With 252 panels so efficient they can even generate small amounts electricity in moonlight, it’s looking brighter for solar (again, pun intended.)

The Green Equation

While everyone knows that pollution is bad both for the planet and all of us living here, the debate lies in how to handle it. Since coal is now one of the most expensive means of generating electricity, some projections are that coal will be completely retired from power generation in just ten more years. Already coal accounts for just 22 percent of America’s energy sourcing. Much of this is because the costs of renewable energy sourcing is dropping dramatically. While coal fired plants continue to go offline annually, here in Michigan companies like Consumer’s Energy know that incentivizing customers to use less electricity by subsidizing customers with the latest power saving tech is far cheaper than building a new power plant.  In a 2019 USA Today article, Mike O’Boyle, Director of Electricity Policy for Energy Innovation, a research non-profit group that is focused on reducing greenhouse gas emissions, stated that the U.S. should be open to a multitude of solutions. He said that innovation is going to find ways to keep the system running at lower costs, adding that if the market sets the agenda technology areas increasingly lean toward more cost efficient carbon neutral solutions.

 

Judging from the fact that several years ago, the idea of going completely solar at WKTV was something not even on the facility’s radar screen to becoming a reality shows that it’s dangerous to say “never.”

 

So starting in late September 2020, WKTV will throw the switch and begin generating daily electricity needs from the star at the center of our solar system. Here on what’s referred to as the “third rock from the sun,” one organization’s leap into solar may only add up to one step for a small business, but still is a giant leap forward for much lower utility bills.

Woodland Mall’s expanding line-up of retailers and restaurants has or will gain nine new arrivals this fall including the opening of Sephora and White House Black Market. And while you are shopping, a stop at the new WOW Sushi for lunch might be in order.

In addition, also now open at Woodland Mall are Jamba, Tempur-Pedic, Bath Planet and FunShop. WOW Sushi, The Zon3 and Windsor are set to open later this fall.

“We are delighted to welcome so many new arrivals to our growing portfolio of retailers and restaurants,” Cecily McCabe, Woodland Mall marketing director, said in supplied material. “We are looking forward to offering guests an expanded selection of shopping and dining options and a premium experience under our rigorous safety protocols.”

Sephora, now open in the Von Maur wing,  debuted in North America more than 20 years ago, and “has been a leader in prestige omni-retail with the purpose of creating an inviting beauty shopping experience and inspiring fearlessness in its community,” according to supplied material.

Also in the Von Maur wing, White House Black Market will open next to Bath & Body Works in early October. WHBM offers “polished black and white women’s clothing with pops of color and patterns for tailored dresses, tops, pants and accessories.”

WOW Sushi opened in the Café in the Woods Food Court at Woodland Mall Sept. 1. Men’s streetwear clothing store The Zon3 will open in the JCPenney wing near H&M in early October. In the Macy’s wing, Windsor will open near Shoe Encore across from Ann Taylor in early November.
 

Also on the list of new retailers and restaurants that recently opened is Jamba, located in the mall’s center court next to Starbucks. Jamba serves on-the-go freshly blended fruit and vegetable smoothies, made-to-order bowls, fresh-squeezed juices and shots, boosts and bites.

Shoppers will also discover FunShop, a new video arcade, in the Macy’s wing near Spencer’s. The space features a popular combination of the latest video and redemption games. Sanitizing wipes are available for customer use on high-touch areas.

Nearly 100 retailers and restaurants have reopened since June 1. A complete list can be viewed on Woodland Mall’s website.

In order to comply with Michigan requirements, occupancy numbers remain limited as the mall operates on reduced hours, Monday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Sunday from noon to 6 p.m. Some stores modify those hours further.

Woodland Mall asks guests to follow CDC recommendations, make use of the several hand sanitizer stations located throughout the mall, wear masks and practice physical distancing. Common area furniture and other elements where physical distancing cannot be enforced have been removed. While the play area remains closed indefinitely, food court seating is now available at reduced capacity.

Despite COVID-19’s impact, Kent County reports progress on 2019-23 Strategic Plan implementation

Despite the COVID-19 pandemic hitting, and Kent County taking a leadership role in local response and recovery through its health department and its allocations of federal CARES Act funds, the county is moving ahead with it 2019-23 Strategic Plan — and it has the stats to prove it.

Kent County announced this week that it had launched its 2019-2023 Strategic Plan Performance Dashboard, designed to track progress made toward achieving the priorities and goals of the County’s Strategic Plan, which was approved by the Board of Commissioners in June 2019.

“Families and businesses are struggling with their own budgets, so we have a responsibility to make their government more accountable and transparent than ever,” Kent County Board of Commissioners Chair Mandy Bolter said in supplied material. “Moving more County data online will help taxpayers know what we are focused on and empower them to hold our feet to the fire when we aren’t getting the job done.”

While there have been major disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, County leadership continues to review the plan and “adjust as necessary to ensure the priorities and goals reflect the changing economic conditions and community needs,” according to the county statement.

The Strategic Plan Performance Dashboard gives more insight into where specific priorities have been disrupted due to COVID-19 and how far along they are to completion.

The dashboard uses seven measures — status pending, on track, some disruption, major disruption, upcoming, discontinued and complete — to track progress toward five priorities: economic prosperity, quality of life, service delivery, inclusive participation and effective communications.


“This is all about effectively and efficiently using our resources to meet community needs,” Kent County Administrator Wayman Britt said in supplied material. “This plan acts as a guide when deciding how to prioritize activities, allocate resources and fund initiatives — and it’s been an invaluable tool during this pandemic.”

World War II ‘Greatest Generation’ to be honored with local remembrance, flyover, book discussion

The 75th anniversary of the end of World War II — coming this week on Sept. 2 — will be commemorated locally with virtual ceremonies and a socially distant Grand Rapids area flyover of war-era military aircraft.
 

The Grand Rapids Greatest Day Celebration Committee and the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Foundation and Museum will host two days of celebration and remembrance of the “Greatest Generation” — Americans who grew up during the Great Depression and fought in World War II, or whose labor helped win the war — starting today, Tuesday, Sept. 1 and continuing Wednesday, Sept. 2.

On Sept. 2, 1945, with the Japanese and American signing of the Instrument of Surrender aboard the U.S. Navy battleship the USS Missouri, World War II was officially over.
    

The local events will begin today, Sept. 1, however, when there will be an “In Memoriam Remembrance and Bell Ringing”, at the Ford Museum, with guest speaker Jim DeFelice, beginning at 6 p.m. The event will be live-streamed on the museum’s Facebook Live page.

Promotional material for the event states: “Hear master storyteller (and) NY Times Bestselling author Jim DeFelice, known for his vivid, raw, and powerful portrayals of modern American military heroes, as he honors those who gave their life during the Second World War.”

The celebration will continue Sept. 2, at about 6 p.m., with the Grand Rapids area portion of a planned flyover of a three restored military aircraft: a Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bomber, a Douglas C-47 Skytrain military transport, and a North American B-25 Mitchell medium bomber. The planes, traveling to Grand Rapids from the Yankee Air Museum in Belleville, are set to make a pass along the Grand River, from north to south, near downtown Grand Rapids, and are expected then make at least one pass over the Wyoming and Kentwood area by flying over the Grand Rapids Veterans Outpatient Clinic in Wyoming before exiting the area.

The celebration will conclude with a another virtual event, “Countdown to 1945 with Chris Wallace” on Sept. 2, at 7 p.m., and also live-streamed on the museum’s Facebook Live page.

A veteran journalist and Fox News Sunday anchor, Wallace will be the keynote speaker of the Greatest Generation Day Celebration. According to supplied material, he will discuss his recently published book, “Countdown 1945: The Extraordinary Story of the Atomic Bomb and the 116 Days That Changed the World.”

“Countdown 1945” delivers a behind-the-scenes account of the 116 days leading to the bombing on Hiroshima on Aug. 6, 1945, and “goes beyond just the atomic bomb and shares accounts of ordinary American and Japanese civilians in wartime.”

During his journalism career, Wallace has covered almost every major political event, and interviewed U.S. and world leaders, including seven American presidents. Throughout his 50-plus years in broadcasting, Wallace has won every major broadcast news award, including three Emmy Awards and the Peabody Award.

County commissioners allocate $2 million to local reopening schools to fund COVID-19 related expenses

The Kent County Board of Commissioners last week approved $2 million, part of a nearly $115 million federal CARES Act grant awarded to Kent County earlier this year, to help county schools reopen safely during the COVID-19 pandemic. All county schools — public, private and charter — are eligible for the funding.

The grants are based on the number of students enrolled in each school in 2019, with schools receiving approximately $16 per student, according to supplied material. The grants provide schools with flexibility in how they use the funds as they continue to implement back-to-school plans.

“We are fortunate to have this federal funding and be able to provide our schools with the resources they need to ensure our children continue to learn and grow,” Kent County Board of Commissioners Chair Mandy Bolter said in supplied material.
 

Eligible uses of the funding could include purchase of personal protection equipment and sanitation supplies, technology costs necessary for enhanced virtual learning, or to finance mental healthcare and nurses.

“We appreciate the support of the Kent County Board of Commissioners. This approval will help schools secure the needed resources and services to meet the needs of students during this pandemic,” Kent ISD Superintendent Ron Caniff said in supplied material.
 

The Kent County Board of Commissioners has previously allocated CARES funding for other programs to assist communities during the coronavirus pandemic, including the Kent County Small Business Recovery Program, shelter assistance, non-profit assistance, and a business personal protection equipment program.

Heavy metal fishin’ — locals land the strangest things, sometimes get police involved

Fishing on the Grand River in downtown Grand Rapids is nothing new. You can see anglers on the banks almost every day, year around.

But a not-so-new version of fishing for fish with the usual bait, fishing for anything metal with magnets, is turning up some unusual catches. From the usual odds and ends, to guns and even an unwisely disposed of military grenade, to — and we have the photograph to prove it — an antique metal toilet, one local magnet fisherman has stories to tell.

“Me and my buddy have pulled up all sorts of stuff, including five guns and a World War II grenade,” Matt Kavaluskis, a lifelong Grand Rapidian and a community volunteer at WKTV Community Media, said recently. “And for that iron toilet, we used three magnets and fourth rope to haul it up.”

Kavaluskis said that while the usual finds — metal odds and ends, large and small — are usually just turned in for scrap. But we are not taking about a little scrap here and there. He points out that in addition to the toilet, they recovered a metal cross beam for a sign that weighed nearly 200 pounds.

His favorite magnet fishing spot, he says, is on either side of the river at the Sixth Street Bridge — “That’s were we have found the most stuff.”

And those guns? That grande? They turned them over to the police, as a Grand Rapids Police Department spokesperson said they should do so.

“With the popularity of magnet fishing, things like this are going to happen,” Sgt. John Wittkowski said to WKTV. “… for the most part we just take them and melt them down. They are really just paperweights, but for obvious reasons we do not return them.”

Unlike in the movie or on television crime dramas, the guns are rarely of any real value to the police.

“Typically, they are in such poor condition, they are of no evidentiary value,” Wittkowski said. “We may check the serial number if that is visible, but usually they are not much use to police.”

But about that World War II antique which Kavaluskis and his buddy turned in …

“If we are taking about a grenade, that is more of a safety issue,” Wittkowski said. “That is very unusual. People occasionally will occasionally bring us things … say they found something when there were going through their father’s belongings. … They are usually inert, but you never know.”

But the bottom line advise from the police department is simple: if you find something like guns or things that could be explosives, call your local police and let the experts handle it.

“Magnets start at $29, go up to $300, depending on what pull weight you want,” Kavaluskis said. “Each magnet comes with 70 feet of rope, a carry box, set of gloves and a carabiner clip. There is like four or five really good magnet companies.”

And what is next on Kavaluskis’ magnet fishing to-do list? He says there is the motorcycle he and his buddy think they know the whereabouts of.

Division Avenue’s planned CityLine Apartments workforce housing complex a first for Kentwood, developer

With the City of Kentwood planning and approval process complete after more than a year, a developer plans to break ground in early September on a 240-unit affordable workforce housing development.

CityLine Apartments will be located on nearly 12 acres of now vacant property touching Division Avenue and 52nd Street, on land most recently used as a used car sales lot and as a golf driving range. It does not include two existing business locations directly on the corner of Division and 52nd.

The CityLine Apartments project, led by developer Herman & Kittle Prop. Inc., of Indianapolis, Ind., will be a “first” in several ways.

It will be the first Grand Rapids area project for a developer which is no stranger to Michigan. It is the first Kentwood development approved using Form Based Code planning changes recently enacted by both the cities of Kentwood and Wyoming to aid redevelopment of the Division Avenue corridor. And it is the first major affordable workforce housing project focused on taking advantage of the Sliver Line bus route intended to move workers to and from downtown but also supporting businesses near the corridor in both Kentwood and Wyoming.

“West Michigan knows that Kentwood is open for business and is successful by meeting our businesses’ needs on a daily basis,” Kentwood Mayor Stephen Kepley said to WKTV this week. “Vibrant communities like Kentwood know that offering a range of housing opportunities is critical to the success of our businesses. This project will help expand our workforce capacity and serve as a catalyst for development along the Division Avenue corridor.”

That city’s goal of aiding development of workforce housing and redevelopment — some would say economic “revitalization” — of the Division Avenue corridor was echoed by city staff in Kentwood.

“The development of CityLine Apartments will likely represent the largest private investment ever made along the Kentwood portion of the corridor,” Lisa Golder, City of Kentwood Economic Development Planner, said to WKTV. “The development of housing along Division fits perfectly into the city’s plans for the area, as residential development supports both the Bus Rapid Transit (Silver Line) and the business community.

 

“Since the apartments are located directly on the Silver Line route, residents will be able to use transit to get to work, shop and recreate. With 240 housing units being introduced to the area, businesses will likely see an increase in demand for goods and services.”

And recent changes to Kentwood and Wyoming development codes, specifically the so-called Form Based Code, was essential for the development to be approved.

“The CityLine Apartments could not have been developed without the new Form Based Code,” Golder said. “With the Form Based Code, residential development is allowed for the first time along Division Avenue.”

The developer and the development

The CityLine Apartments is currently planned to be eight residential buildings including one, two and three-bedroom apartments, as well as a clubhouse, accessory garage/storage buildings, a pool and playground, and even a dog park for residents of the “pet friendly” complex, according to Caroline Kimmel, CityLine development director for Herman & Kittle Prop. Inc. (HKP).

“The development has been in process since July 2019, HKP needed to rezone a portion of the site, as well as work through the rest of the development and site planning process with the city,” Kimmel said to WKTV. “This development is about a two-year construction period, but the first units will be available in about 16 months, or January/February of 2022.”

The planning approval process “took several meetings with the City as well as multiple public hearings to be finalized,” she said.

CityLine is HKP’s first development in Grand Rapids, Kimmel said, but the company has developments in Kalamazoo, Jackson, Niles, Lansing, and Benton Harbor, “as well as over 130 additional properties in 16 other states.”

And Kimmel said the reason for her company’s interest in the Kentwood development was simply good business.

“The Grand Rapids area is still one of the fastest growing metropolitan areas in the Midwest, and HKP is very excited to be a part of that growth,” Kimmel said. “Our internal and external demand analysis showed that rents are growing faster than incomes, and that we might be able to help balance out that growth with a development geared toward workforce housing.

“The commuter bus line is a highly desirable amenity, especially for residents who may not have the financial means to live in downtown Grand Rapids, but want the ease of access that the Silver Line offers,” she said.

According to information supplied by HKP and City of Kentwood planning documents, the Kentwood development will include 72 one-bedroom units, 120 two-bedroom units, and 48 three-bedroom units. Twelve of the units are designated for people with disabilities.

The larger buildings will have 36 units while the smaller will have 24 units. Three garage buildings will be provided with 18 stalls, including one handicap stall. In total there will be 357 parking spaces provided including 325 standard spaces, 14 handicap parking spaces, and the 18 garage spaces.

“HKP believes this development will attract a mix of one and two parent households with children, as well as single persons who work downtown, but the property is not age restricted,” Kimmel said. “A close proximity to schools will attract families as well, especially with the walkability this location offers.”

Finances for the project; costs for renters

The development is financed through a combination of sources, according to Kimmel, including tax-exempt bonds for construction, a mortgage, and Tax Credit Equity from Michigan State Housing Development Authority (MSHDA).

“The MSHDA Tax Credits provide equity to the development, which allows a reduced mortgage, enabling rents to remain affordable for Kent County residents,” she said.

Residents will be subject to a rent-history screening and criminal background check and other compliance requirements set forth by MSHDA, Kimmel said. Income limits will range from $33,720 for a one-person household, $38,520 for two persons, $43,320 for three persons, $48,120 for four persons, and $52,020 for five persons.

“Lease-up will likely begin in late 2021 or early 2022,” she added. “A leasing trailer will be on site with contact information as soon as we are accepting applications.”

Traffic generation to be monitored

While CityLine’s location on the Silver Line bus route is expected to mitigate the usual vehicular traffic issues a development of this size might normally produce, city documents state that a detailed Traffic Impact Assessment may yet be needed.

“Using Institute of Traffic Engineers trip generation data, a 240-unit apartment development generates 1,317 daily trips and 117-129 peak hour trips,” according to a city planning department report. “If this many trips are anticipated, a Traffic Study would be required. However, the data does not take into account the existence and use of the Silverline BRT, which may reduce the trip generation. The applicant should provide a best estimate of vehicle trips anticipated based on other locations in communities adjacent to a BRT line or light rail.”

Annual Pulaski Days cancelled due to COVID-19, but ‘Save the Halls’ community support still needed

Another “community tradition” casualty of COVID-19, the Grand Rapids area Pulaski Days Committee announced last week that Pulaski Days — the week-long celebration of Polish/Lithuanian culture held every fall in Grand Rapids since 1973 — has been cancelled this year due to concerns about spread of the virus among attendees and volunteers.

This is the first time in the event’s history that it has been canceled, Michelle Kershner, chairperson of the Pulaski Days Committee, said in supplied material. The committee coordinates the efforts of 14 Polish/Lithuanian halls and fraternal organizations that fund and put on the celebration, which is a major fundraiser for the organizations.

But the cancellation does not mean Pulaski Days fans cannot support the local halls and fraternal organizations — the Pulaski Days Committee also announced it is launching a “Save The Halls” campaign to raise money to help the organizations make it through until Pulaski Days 2021.
 

“It was an extremely difficult decision to cancel Pulaski Days this year,” Kershner said in supplied material. “Many people were looking forward to listening and dancing to the top-notch polka bands that we bring to town and sampling the authentic Polish food served at the halls. The halls are terribly disappointed too, because Pulaski Days is their single largest source of revenue.

“But after a lot of debate over several meetings, we made the tough decision to cancel because we couldn’t determine how to hold an event that drew more than 300,000 people last year and ensure that everyone would be safe from spreading COVID-19.”

In past years, the week-long event included a flag raising ceremony, parade, golf outing, coronation of the Pulaski Days queen, kielbasa eating contest, Polka Mass and three days of music and food at the halls. Visitors from Wisconsin, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia and other states have visited the area to participate.

 

The need for masks at close quarters indoors and social distancing requirements “runs counter to everything that makes Pulaski Days such a popular event,” according to the statement.

 

“The heart of Pulaski Days is to be social — eat, dance and get together with family and old friends, and make new friends,” Kershner said. “Now how are you going to do that standing six feet from someone with your mask on?”

Financial impact widespread in community

The cancellation of Pulaski Days is more than just a disappointment for Polish/Lithuanian halls and fraternal organizations, Jim Seppala, president of Diamond Avenue Hall/St. Isidore’s Benevolent Aid Society, said in supplied material.

“We depend on Pulaski Days as a major source of our annual operating budget,” Seppala said. “We run a tight ship financially, but no matter how you cut it, we are going to feel the pinch that the event isn’t being held this year. Regardless, we know that we are doing the right thing.”

Along with a number of other halls in Grand Rapids, Diamond Avenue Hall is working to restore some of the revenue lost from Pulaski Days through other COVID-safe promotions, according to the statement. For example, the hall recently held a drive-through service where customers could pick up combo plates of Polish food, tee shirts, can koozies and other items without leaving their cars. 

But the halls will need additional help to make sure they can keep their doors open and host Pulaski Days 2021, Kershner said.
 

“Many of the halls have been in continuous operation for more than a century — for instance, Diamond Avenue Hall was established in 1892,” she said. “We have to make sure that they’ll remain strong for generations to come.”

So, the Pulaski Days Committee is asking individuals to buy pins and Polish shields at local businesses such as Sobie Meats, 3450 Remembrance Rd NW and Lewandoski Meats, 1107 Walker Ave NW. The committee also is asking for charitable contributions to an emergency fund called Save The Halls.  All of the money collected will be split equally among all of the halls, Kershner said.

Sen. Peters visits local postal service facilities amid mail-in ballot voting concerns

U.S. Sen. Gary Peters (D-Mi) on Tuesday visited a U.S. Postal Office (USPS) processing facility on Patterson Avenue SE in Grand Rapids to see first-hand the causes of slowdowns, delays and backlogs he says are occurring in communities across the country.

After the Aug. 25 tour and at a media opportunity at the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) Branch 56 in nearby Kentwood, Sen. Peters stressed that his concerns — and the investigation of postal service changes he has recently initiated as ranking Democrat on the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee — are not solely about the pending November election.

He said that postal service operational changes are preventing veterans from receiving timely delivery of their prescription medications through the Department of Veterans Affairs’ mail-order pharmacy service. He also said he has heard firsthand that delays are directly impacting small businesses in West Michigan and across the county.

However, answering a question from WKTV, he expressed confidence in the ability of local city and township clerks — in Wyoming and Kentwood and statewide — to reliably count the ballots they will receive, but he also expressed some concerns about “possible” delays in the handling mail-in ballots.
 

“What we are seeing right now, that concerns me, because of the delays we have been hearing,” Sen. Peters said, adding that he had also been told about delays in mail-in ballots getting to voters from the city clerk in his hometown of Bloomfield Hills.

He also, though, gave advice on how Wyoming and Kentwood voters can avoid any issue with possible postal delays in mail-on ballots — request and acquire the ballots early, mail them early or drop them off directly at the local clerks’ offices. (See his entire statement at this video link.)

Last week, Sen. Peters, who is running for election to the Senate against Republican challenger John James as well as other independent candidates, led a Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee hearing with Postmaster General Louis DeJoy. DeJoy, who became Postmaster General two months ago, was questioned on the policy and operational changes possibly resulting in delayed mail across the country.

This June, WKTV had four Ferris State University students join the team.

For the past several years, WKTV has worked with Ferris State University having about two student interns at the station per year. The students usually come January through June or June through December.

All the students are seniors in Ferris State University’s Television and Digital Media Production.

What are you learning on your internship? How are you making a difference?

I’m learning more about shoots, the different types of cameras, and editing in new software like Final Cut Pro. I am helping craft census stories, shooting b-roll, and offering story ideas for the community.

What are your future plans, what do you hope this internship leads to professionally?

I hope to work with either a news station like WKTV or a film/media studio as an editor/writer.

What advice can you offer to other students seeking, hoping to learn about internships?

Pick a few (about five to six) that you would want to work at and make sure that the internship fits for you and offers a variety of job opportunities.

What are you learning on your internship? How are you making a difference?

I’m learning how to become a better video editor, director, cameraman, as well as media as a whole. Making videos and content makes me feel like I’m creating enjoyment and happiness in my audience.

What are your future plans, what do you hope this internship leads to professionally?

I hope to be hired with a video production company and work as an editor professionally.

What advice can you offer to other students seeking, hoping to learn about internships?

I would advise being aggressive and open in your searches; don’t stick to ideal situations only.

Remember that it is just an internship so it doesn’t matter where you go, just make the most of it.

I’m mostly learning what was taught to me at Ferris; however, I’m learning new aspects of those lessons like new ways and methods of doing certain tasks as well as new equipment.

What are your future plans, what do you hope this internship leads to professionally?

I hope to become a script writer for TV and movies, and possibly a producer and/or director.

What advice can you offer to other students seeking, hoping to learn about internships?

When looking for an internship, don’t be picky and reach out to as many places as you can, and be open to new learning experiences.

Calling all chalk artists: Kentwood to host ‘Chalk the Lot’ family fun weekend Aug. 28-30

The City of Kentwood’s Park and Recreation Department has come up with an artistically colorful way to show off the Veterans Memorial Park’s new playground, splash pad and concession stand.

Can you say ‘chalk art fun’ for all?

The city will host a free family event the weekend of Aug. 28-30 appropriately titled “Chalk the Lot”, when families can gain supplied chalk, get assigned blocks in the park’s parking lot, and go to town with their own art projects.

The Kentwood Activities Center and Veterans Memorial Park is located at 355 48th St SE. Registration for chalk art blocks are available, and the public is invited to view the artwork even if they did not create it — practicing proper social distancing, of course.
 

“We’re excited to host our first ever Chalk the Lot,” Spencer McKellar, lead recreation program coordinator for the Park and Recreation Department, said to WKTV. “It’s a great opportunity for families to take part in a free event, enjoy the summer weather, and check out the amenities at Veterans Memorial Park.”

McKellar came up with the idea, shared it with the staff, and the first-ever such event came together, according to Laura Barbrick, marketing and events coordinator for the parks department.

There are not set specific times for art creation, so that families can come whenever it is convenient for them, according to the city. The event will begin on Friday, Aug. 29, at noon and will end on Sunday evening.

The city asks families to register in advance so they can get an assigned spot and pick up the chalk for the event. Chalk must be picked up at the Kentwood Activities Center the week leading up to the event during business hours (Monday through Thursday, Aug. 24-27, 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., or Friday, Aug. 28, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.).

Ring bell at the front door or call 616-656-5270 and a staff member will assist, Barbrick said.
