Zeeland will host its eighth Zeeland twilight Criterium. This event will take place on Saturday, Aug. 20, beginning at 5 p.m.

A Criterium is, by definition, a one-day bicycle race down a circuit road course. It is the most common form of American racing, complete with a multi-lap race to the finish. The course, generally spanning up to a mile in length, is repeated by the cyclists until anywhere from 25 to 60 miles is covered. The cyclists are to successfully tear through consecutive corners of the course without a place-breaking wipe out.

Quick acceleration, agility, and balance are essential to being a competitive contender in the race. Zeeland’s Criterium racers will charge through the streets of Zeeland in a competitive half mile loop throughout historic downtown.

The event commences with a 5 p.m. kick off of the free kids race where children 12 and under are welcome to come out and race on the same course used by the pros (each child must wear a helmet to be part of the race).

Children’s race at 5 p.m. (1 Lap)

Category 4/5 Race at 5:30 p.m. (30 minutes)

Category 3/4 Race at 6:15 p.m. (45 minutes)

Community Ride at 7:05 p.m. (3 laps)

Category 1/2/3 Race at 7:20 p.m. (60 minutes)

Both start and finish of the race is held midblock on Main Street between Elm and Church. Participants will cycle west on Main Street to Elm; south on Elm to Central; East on Central to Church; south on Church to Lincoln; East on Lincoln to Centennial; North on Centennial Main; West on Main to finish.

At the close of each race, awards will be presented in the park near the start / finish.

Registration is available at: https://www.bikereg.com/zeeland-criterium . Registration now through Aug. 18 is $45. Aug. 19 & 20 the fee is $55.

The Downtown Zeeland Trick or Treat event will be held on Oct. 29. This marks the 9th Trick or Treat on Main Street event provided by West Michigan Community Bank.

The Trick or Treat event will take from 3-5 p.m. downtown Zeeland. Main Street will be closed between Elm Street and Church Street to create a safe area for Trick or Treating. Come rain or shine!

This event provides a safe, family friendly environment for younger children to participate in Trick or Treating while promoting the City of Zeeland’s downtown businesses. Children are invited to participate in this event instead of, or in addition to, city-wide Trick or Treating! City wide trick or treating is scheduled on October 30th from 5 to 8 p.m., houses with exterior lights on indicate homes welcoming trick or treaters.

Children are invited to pick up a bag from West Michigan Community Bank volunteers at the tent located in front of 130 E. Main Street. From there, children can Trick or Treat by entering the participating businesses. Savor the goodies provided by downtown businesses and have fun saying hello to Zeeland’s downtown merchants. Complimentary donuts provided by Zeeland Bakery and apple cider. There will be a photo station at 152 East Main.

Also on site, the Zeeland BPW, Zeeland Police Department and Zeeland Fire Department will be giving Trick or Treating safety tips and providing fun for all ages. Come check out the fire truck and police car!

The countdown is on for Zeeland’s Pumpkinfest — celebrating community, family fun and fall activities for over 30 years. The theme for 2016 is “Pumpkinfest In Disguise.”

The two-day event features a number of free and low-cost events that can be enjoyed by all ages, and it all happens Friday, Oct. 7 and Saturday, Oct. 8 — a departure from Pumpkinfest’s traditional three-day schedule.

For the second year, Pumpkinfest is partnering with the Holland Area Arts Council to coordinate a community art-centered project called Pumpkinfest Avenue Art, and the community is welcome to join in to express their creative talents.

On Friday, Oct. 7Dessert on Us — a celebration of community and a complimentary donut and cider — replaces the event formerly known as Dinner on Us. A sweet treat, combined with an evening of family activities, including the Kids Tractor Pull, hayrides and KidzFest events, will make for a see and be seen community event that you won’t want to miss.

pumpkins-002Then, on Saturday, Oct. 8 at 3 pm it’s time for the Pumpkinfest Parade featuring marching bands, horses, walking groups, tractors and, of course, floats featuring this year’s theme. The parade route is: West on Main Ave. from Centennial St. to State St., South on State St. to Central Ave., East on Central Ave. ending at Maple St.

Pumpkinfest also features a fun place for kids to be creative, learn and play at KidZfest. Within the KidZfest area, families will discover bounce houses, petting zoos, stage performances, pony rides and more. KidZfest will be located on Church St. just south of Main Ave.

Fans can purchase event merchandise, including collector’s edition longsleeve and short-sleeve Pumpkinfest t-shirts as well as insulated travel mugs at the Pumpkinfest Information Tent, located at 130 E. Main. Profits from merchandise sales are used to support future Pumpkinfest activities.
